How to learn maqamat Part 1 - What are maqamat?

- If you've ever wanted to recite Quran beautifully, perhaps you've come across the term maqam or the plural maqamat. But what exactly are maqamat, and how can you go about learning them? In this 3-part series I'm going to show you the method I use to teach maqamat in our programs, especially my Overnight Qari Experience. It's our tried and tested method of teaching maqamat that makes it super easy to learn. I'll explain this using maqam hijaz, but the same method can apply to any other maqam as well.

probably not the mini-course, because now we teach nahawand in greater detail in OQ ... at least some versions when we do nahawand. This time we're doing hijaz and bayati. If you want to learn maqamat more generally, I would suggest start with this upcoming OQ, and then I normally give returning students a discount to join again when we do a diff maqam

salaam, can one only recite melodically with maqamat?
Salaam, if you're using "maqamat" in a specific sense of Arabic tune, then technically speaking the answer would be no. Think of the Sudanese reciters e.g. Shaykh Nurayn rA, they're reciting in a diff tune. But practically speaking the arabic maqamat are just the most common and familiar when it comes to Quran recitation. Hope that helps!
