Unfortunately, 9 months after filming this my ultraswing ended up cracking and failing while i was driving. Thank goodness i wasn't on the freeway when it happened. I had modified mine by removing the spare tire carrier, which potentially weakened the swing out a bit. It cracked and failed where the hook passes through the tube. Ill film a video of my failure soon. When it failed, it ended up crushing two of my bikes, totalling one of my $2200 frames. Theyre working on a stronger model, but they told me its still not recommended for vertical bike racks like the velocirax. The search for a suitable swingout continues...
I'm glad that I scrolled down and found this comment! I currently own the 7 bike Velocirax variation and I'm on the hunt for a good swing out option as well!
This set-up was exactly what I was looking for to add to my F250 Lariat. Have a camper in my truck bed and needed to be able to access that but carry the bikes when travelling. Already got my VelicoRAX and in process with the Ultraswing. Thanks for a convincing demo.
Thanks Steve, I'll be getting a Velocirax 5 when my 4-bike Kuat finally gives up the ghost,. It's been stubbornly going strong since 2016 though. I do need that SwingAway with the table in my life now though!
I can attest to the build quality on the Rigd. Ram 3500 with LoLo-6 spot on Rigd mega-fit. Had to be “experiMental” with the lower bar to clear the truck bed at full open. My “Adventure support vehicle” is a work in progress. Cool to see what others are doing!!
That SWINGOUT is beefy and really slick BUT with my Velocirax and 3 Specialized LEVO, it was too much for the rack. The bikes were bouncing like crazy because the connection point isn't reinforced by the hitch tube similar to a KUAT or Yakima swingout. I sold my bike rack and the swingout and went with a KUAT and Yakima swing away. I like the Yakima retention better than the KUAT.
That is a sweet setup!!! I have been thinking about building a platform with storage underneath, but not sure if I want to permanently take up the bed space under my topper. I use a custom fit truck air mattress right now.
I couldn't be happier with my decked system. A few years ago I built my own storage platform and it ended up costing me more than the decked and wasn't nearly as functional.
@@hardtailparty is decked the name of a pre-built system? I have a rare bed configuration Nissan frontier that is crew cab but still has a full 6' bed(it's a bus for a small truck lol). Needless to say my crew cab has turned into a storage/tool space with one seat down for my son. But it is nice for sleeping at 5'11"!!!
@@hardtailparty Thanks I have a bass boat as well, and it will come in all kinds of handy. The 6' bed is common with the extended cab versions so I'm sure they do, will check it out! Thanks!
I asked them if this could carry a vertical kayak carrier and 2 30 lb kayaks, and they said they wouldn’t reccomend due to the bouncing. I’m confused how at the price point and something meant to carry a tire off-roading how it couldn’t but idk🤔tempted to try anyway maybe
I wonder if the VelociRax racks are upgradeable. If you start off with a 3-bike rack, but need a larger one later. Right now I'd never use more than 3, but who knows in the future.
I am sure you have been asked this before, but any thoughts on the Ritchey Ultra? I would be riding it on Midwest trails if that makes a difference to your response.
I just replaced my 1up with a 5x Velocirax, needed to carry 5 bikes to ACA races instead of 4 with all of our kids racing now. Love the rack. Will check out the RIGd as we have the same issue accessing our Suburban. We also pull a Bean trailer on our trips, can you estimate distance from the new hitch location to clearing your bikes while on the rack?
@@hardtailparty I think he is worried about the distance the bikes stick out while pulling a trailer, to see if the trailer tongue is long enough to not run into the bikes while turning with a trailer.
What I have wondered with what I see with most bike racks and especially with bikes on them obscuring the license plate and possibly getting pulled over for that . I try to position my budget rack on my car so the plate is visible but that took a bit of adjustment on how to do that . I am sure you removed your plate for the video as I don't see it . Many drivers I drive behind with bike racks you can't make out the identifications on the plate . Is it a problem and do people get pulled over for it ?
I have been pulled over once for obscuring my license plate (it was completely covered by my rack) he just told me to fix it but you could potentially be ticketed.
Driving at night without a license plate light is a good way to get pulled over. The cops where I live aren't too worried about partially obscured license plates, but when I lived in CA it was a different story.
@@hardtailparty Yeah I live in socal so when I stood back and looked at my first bike rack setup I said to myself that probably won't fly . I guess in Sedona the police would probably spend there whole day pulling over licences plate infractions and nothing else so they probably don't bother .
Sucks that Arizona does not make exceptions to their license plate obscuration law for bike racks like some other states do. I've seen some use the stick-on battery powered cabinet lights for a temporary solution just for one trip, but I imagine that'd be a pain if you did more than like one trip a year.
@@hardtailparty yeah, I can’t post the picture of what I’ve been doing but I’d like to get something more secure. Though it’s a bit of a moot point right now as my bike and I got run over 2 days ago. Banged me up a bit and broke my derailleur and rear rim. I’m really bummed about my Big Al.
There are license plate and backup camera relocation kits on the RigD Supply website. It’s not a cheap setup. The RigD is $1599 USD without the table or relocation kits. I have one on my Lexus GX (Prado) and it was about $2200 shipped with relocation kits and spare tire mount.
No way!? What a bummer. I just wanna say I appreciate you just going for it with mods, experiments, and over/under biking different trails. It’s always stuff I’m thinking about

Alta racks swinger. Hinges rated at 1,000 lbs. Done!
Did you ever get a chance to make that video? I looked through your content, but didn’t see it.
for the cost of that swingout, you could get a swingout, high clearance

Thanks for showing what the backup camera looks like with this set up. I don't see a lot of reviews doing that.

Yeah but does it fit on the Miata?
No no. The Miata fits on the rack.
It makes the Miata do wheelies, like those turbo trickster cars when you put a penny in the back.
I've been thinking about building something that clamps to my roll bar
