    What's the difference between Wireguard and Lightway, which is ExpressVPN's new VPN protocol?
    This is a question that has been asked quite a bit as beta testers like me have been using the new connection. It's not yet released as open source yet, but there's a lot that makes it look very similar to WireGuard.
    Both VPN protocols offer the same benefits (lightweight, stable connections that don't drain the battery) but ExpressVPN insists that it's an entirely new protocol. So who's right?

    Why would I use a closed-source protocol from a random VPN company and blindly trust it? Why go create your own protocol when there are standardized options? Backdoored crap. No thanks. Only Wireguard and OpenVPN will get our full trust and attention.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  3 года назад +1

      Having more options isn’t a bad thing, in my opinion. I’m all in favor of ExpressVPN creating a new protocol, and I’m confident it will actually end up being a very respectable protocol (it’s in their best interests to do so), but I’m not going to either sing their praises nor accuse them of creating a back door until the source code has been released.

      @@AllThingsSecured It’s like asking you to trust a ‘surgeon’ to do a heart transplant surgery on you but he hasnt been board certified or shown us his diplomas because we need a wide variety of doctors. No, we need battle tested and audited protocols. No sham experiments in this industry - trust is everything and is gained by providing proof or review from industry experts. we have audited standards for a reason. They have neither released the source code nor publicly released an audit. That makes it a non-starter. A VPN isn’t a tool to “test the waters” with. It’s supposed to be mission-critical security tool that can be used for extreme security needs but also be used to bypass geo-restrictions in more relaxed use cases. I guarantee they will eventually cave in and go Wireguard when they see that it’s not picking up with the masses. A VPN is built on trust. We trust OpenVPN because it’s stood the test of time against very strong attacks and two very high profile industry audits. We trust Wireguard, which gained endorsement of Linus himself(a mighty feat in and of itself), got pulled into the mainline kernel, back-ported to priors, passed MIT computational proofs, and received a third party audit.

    I would say as long express vpn haven’t released the core source, then I won’t trust them. For me personally I have changed my private vpn to WireGuard from openvpn about a half year ago and tbh I haven’t seen any issues for my use case

    ExpressVPN don't really have anything positive to say about Lightway that isn't a positive of WireGuard as well, so I have to imagine it's aimed at cost savings for them on the server side, maybe using some AES construction instead of ChaCha20-Poly1305 because their server hardware accelerates AES.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  3 года назад

      Maybe so, I'm not sure. Personally, I think they're just trying to develop a proprietary protocol that, if effective, they could license to other VPN providers in the future. Just a guess, though.

  • @allankempson6951
    @allankempson6951 2 года назад

    ExpressVPN have made Lightway open-source now. Personally I prefer Lightway. It's very fast, and it doesn't drop when switching networks, or even when switching between ExpressVPN servers. Lightway supports TCP and UDP, whereas WireGuard only supports UDP. That can be a problem on some wi-fi networks with restrictive firewalls as VPNs over TCP are more likely to get through the firewall.

    • @AllThingsSecured

      Interesting comparison. Wireguard doesn’t drop when switching networks, though.

      ExpressVPN have already confirmed its going to be open-source. It even says on their website: "And soon, the core library of Lightway will be open-sourced, ensuring that it can be transparently and widely scrutinized." If they say this, and then don't deliver, they'll be ripped to shreds.

    03:36 - Is it really difficult though?
    - Express has been hacked
    - Express is the single company using the Lightway protocol.... and will likely be the ONLY company to use it becuase it will likely never be open source
    - You, yourself listed a handful of providers that use Wireguard by default this = user option based on server location, reliability, etc.
    In short, there are WILDLY massive differences.... the problem is, you have affiliate links. And just like everyone else, create these click-trash videos. For gods sake, you have a video with a title that starts with "Don't use a VPN..."
    Fix yourself.
