Yeah that's right, I didn't mention that you could take an Uber once outside the metro, but I didn't mention that because I thought that would be fairly obvious and didn't need mentioning. Well, I've been informed by quite a few people now that although I am mistaken in saying there are NO elevators, there are quite a few stations WITHOUT elevators. The stations I have frequented do not. Which makes it difficult for a foreigner visiting (who is unfamiliar with the stations and the city) which stations will have elevators available and where to locate them. But I stand corrected, there are some stations (apparently many on the green line) with elevators available. Thank you for writing in to inform me of this! 🙏

Metro carriages seems to be quite modern and clean. And cheap. Unfortunatelly there is no connection from cairo international airport, but I heard that there are also plans to extend existing metro to airport, which will be great thing for tourist and not only
Thanks again for the great video. Whenever I travel, I always use public transit so this is very helpful for my Cairo planning (early stages). How do you get to some of those sites not on the metro? Taxi? Bus? Thanks!
Yeah you can take a taxi (which is not very expensive at all), or the more local way - microbus. I will soon be making videos about different taxi apps in Egypt (they have motorbike taxis! 🎉) as well as the microbus.
@@ahmmoh2406 I've already been told by several Egyptians that not all the stations do. Some do, some don't. It also explains why I've seen handicap people taking the stairs - because there are no elevators at some stations. I'm 100% sure of that. Tell me where the elevator is in Tahrir square, for example. Go film there and show me
Hello, it was interesting for me. The prices are unbelievably cheap. In comparison, the tickets here in Munich/Germany are exorbitantly more expensive. Gigi, thank you for the video. Best wishes from Dagi
I did a double take when you mentioned the Metro to Helwan, my Dad was stationed there, when serving with the Royal Air Force, during WW2, he met Mum, who was Egyptian, and married her in Cairo, in 1945.
At the end of the road from Mary Girgis, you will find the Amr Mosque, the first mosque built in Egypt, then next to the Center for Popular Handicraft Arts, and behind them is the Museum of Civilization. 😊You can take a microbus from there for a short distance to Sayyeda Aisha Square, the Citadel, and the Sultan Hassan Mosque.
Are you telling me this, or just people in general? 😅 I suppose just people in general. So if any visitors are reading this, I am making a video about the microbus soon and then you will know how to use that as well.
Hey Guiselle - everything good? Sure, it was a very informative vid. It looks like very easy to navigate. A few doubts: no card needed to ride the trains only by buying tickets? I might assume coming back to Cairo I would need to do the same but backwards, right? Are there security checkpoints in all metro stations? Greetings.
You can buy a card with multiple rides on them, yes. Or you can just buy single rides every time you take the train, it just depends on how often you plan to be using the train. It doesn't go to many places most tourists plan to frequent, but the microbuses will get you almost everywhere. There aren't security checks at every station (I don't think) but most stations I have been to have them
Hi Giselle I just got a question how is the situation down at Cario nowadays with the protest that's going on I'm planning to come beginning of next month
Haha. Yeah actually, I was stopped by the police while filming this 😆 I just didn't show that because it wasn't relevant to the video. But I showed them my RUclips channel and told them I was making a video about the metro and then they allowed me to go on my way.

Hmm, hard to compare. The trains will take you pretty much everywhere in NYC, but not so much in Cairo. There's a lot more walking involved to get to certain places in Cairo, and as mentioned in the video, most of the places tourists want to visit aren't very accessible by the metro right now, but some will be in the future. The most local form of transportation is the microbus, that will get you anywhere you want to go, but it's a lot more difficult (and perhaps intimidating) for tourists to navigate the microbuses. Aside from that the subway system is decent here. They are clean and less smelly than the NYC subway.
Unfortunately no, not yet anyway. There is talk of building one, but currently there is nothing close enough to easily walk to from the airport to the metro. Thankfully, catching an Uber is easy to do from the airport, and the rides are affordable (around $8 USD to downtown Cairo from Cairo Intl., depending on time and traffic).
I've used the metro which is very clean modern and efficient BUT you cannot use a credit card to buy a ticket (cash only) AND they don't give change if you have let's say a 100 EGP (1,90 euro) note! A very nice Egyptian lady bought the ticket for me and an asian couple in front of me because they refused to give us change! So be sure you have the exact amount or as close to it as possible.
Oh, I never go to Nasr City, so I know literally nothing about the area or the institutes. Even if I did know something about them, I bet they wouldn't let me film anyway. Those kinds of places are hard to film in. Sorry Jessica
U were in Sadat station and didn't filmed the real Pharaohs statues located in the train stop platform By the way u should try line no. 3 It is totally different from line no. 1&2 and also u should try Lrt train .. it's is amazing
Because of the side I was on I didn't film the statue. And you know how the police are about filming around that area. I just wanted to film as much as I could without issues. I actually always ride my motorcycle, so I normally don't even take the train. I just did to show the viewers the options
I don't think you mentioned it. Not sure why they do it. But the trains for some reason have two separate carts that are women only. Do you know the reason behind it?
It's the result of sexual harassment and groping by men. But Egypt isn't the only country that has done this. Trains with a few cars that are segregated by gender also exist in Iran, Japan, India, UAE, and some other countries as well. They tried it out in Brazil and Mexico I think, not sure how that's going or if it is still in use or not though.
Really?! I'll be honest, I'm not on the green line (or the metro in general) that often, since I am usually riding my motorcycle. When you say some stations are wheelchair accessible, what do you mean? Are there elevators going from the street level down to the subway, or just a ramp next to the stairs, or what? And you say some stations are accessible, but others are not? So I suppose it will be a bit of a guessing game for the person with the disability whether they can get out of that station or not on the green line...
@@mam18181 Well I think I got enough information from the comments, to be honest 😅But I think my real point here is, if I am a tourist in a wheelchair visiting Cairo, I cannot wheel myself down the stairs to ask someone that works there if there is an elevator, which would leave me sitting on the street in my wheelchair forced to ask anyone passing by. And in the areas that many tourists frequent (downtown Cairo for example - Sadat station), there does not seem to be any elevators. Beyond that, the fact that some stations have elevators and others do not, and that the stations that do have them are not so easy or obvious to find, would already make the metro more challenging and inconvenient, or make people visiting with disabilities less inclined to try to take the metro. But yes, I could have asked.
@@Gventures From street level to the platform! I say most stations because the first phase of the green line was completed 1 decade ago, so i cant be sure. The new phase im quite certain is fully equipped with elevators and staff for accessibility. :D
@@Koul_The_King Yeah but it's not close at all. After the metro you need to transfer to a bus. If you walked from the metro to the airport it would take like 3 hours through highways and stuff. His question was "Is the metro anywhere near the airport?" And it's not.
Every subway stop in Toronto provides a vista into a different flavor of the city. The TO map isn't true to scale, and the subway stops aren't actually equal distances from each other. It is just easier o present to people on the train that way. The Cairo map seems to mirror that. Each stop can't possibly be an identical distance from the next, can it? Surely there are clusters. So ... how close to the river is Line 1? Are there any stops that are within a block of an interesting dock, beach, or parkette? Do any of the Line 1 stops lead to a Chinatown, Little India, British Expat area, etc.? Is there a subway stop somewhat dedicated to that scorpion prison in the south end of the city, which is near to the river? Are any subway stops dedicated to shopping malls, sporting arenas, universities, nightlife hot spots, weird industries? In short, where do all those subway stops go?
It is not that close. A mistake many people make about Cairo is thinking they can walk to many places. The distances between things is vast, it is much further than it appears on the map, and it is hot and the traffic is overwhelming for most people visiting. Crossing the street is a challenge for many, let alone dozens for long distances. No, no stops within a block of the river. No stops near expat communities. Scorpion prison? Not that I am aware of. Why are you asking about prisons? I explained where these metro stops go in the video, summarizing that they don't go to many places of interest for foreigners. They exist for normal, regular, local people to get around. Just like any subway in the world.
I’ve been watching your vids in preparation for my solo trip to Egypt. I’ve travelled loads in my life but not been anywhere for 5 years so I’m a bit nervous. I’ve been to Egypt before (only spent one night n two days in Cairo) but not alone. I’ve been to many countries alone but never a Muslim country so I’m just trying to make sure I know what I’m doing. My daughter used my phone to get money off vouchers on Uber eats so now I can only have an Uber account if I change my phone number and I can’t do that so will I be ok getting around without Uber? Cz all the info online says Uber is essential in Cairo. I don’t even know if I should cancel my whole trip or go somewhere else 🤷🏼♀️ I really don’t know what to do right now. Solo female traveller from the uk, half way through my 40’s 💜 tia to anybody that replies to this comment 💜
Oh don't worry, you'll be fine! I just made a video about safety, here's that if you want to watch it: ruclips.net/video/ZNDQxLwNKaQ/видео.html About the taxi situation. I really do recommend Uber (or another taxi app) to get around the city, as those white city taxis will always try to rip you off. Can I ask how you are planning to have internet? Because if you buy a local SIM while here (cheap, much cheaper than the international plans from your home country), then you will automatically have a new number anyways (while you are here using the Egyptian SIM), and will have no issues using Uber. Don't cancel your trip because of taxis, it's nothing to worry about! And aside from Uber, there are also other apps like Didi and InDriver, which are very similar to Uber. Let me know if you have any more questions about anything, whether it's SIM cards, or where to catch Uber at Cairo International, etc. Hope this helps!
sorry you didn't look up well all metro stations have elevators for old people and disabled... but it may be tricky to find to avoid kids playing and to be clear from people walking in stations ... if you ask for it in any stations operators will show you the way to it and it is from the street level to ticket hall and another one for every bank of the train ... i hope you correct that in your videos because what you say give bad repetition for Cairo metro... it is the 4th biggest metro network in world ... and millions of people using it every day
also there is many trains models... the one in your video is the oldest model from the 80's ... in the same line if you wait for the other coming train there is new model with air-condition and live screens show the trip stations and also Audio notifications and instructions and much better noise isolation... thanks for your nice video's in Egypt
I'm sorry but make your own video if you have a problem with mine. I took this train to show going to Coptic Cairo, and I got on the first one that arrived. My videos show reality, I don't paint over, pretend or depict anything from the truth. It was just the train that arrived and I got on. That is what reality is like, I am not waiting for another newer model of train that I didn't even know existed to film. Jeez. Nothing is ever good enough for some people

Yes I agree! I will definitely be making a video about that if they do it and once it is closer to completion. T
🎉) as well as the microbus.
this video is so beautiful ❤ and I want to say that the elevator exists in line 3
Thank you Thunder! And good to know about the elevators, I was not aware they existed on line 3 when I recorded this.
@@Gventures you are welcome ❣
@@Gventures all lines have elevators... line 1 and 2 have elevators from the street to ticket hall and another one to the train level banks
both line 1 and 2 also have elevators... if you ask the station operators will show you
@@ahmmoh2406 I've already been told by several Egyptians that not all the stations do. Some do, some don't. It also explains why I've seen handicap people taking the stairs - because there are no elevators at some stations. I'm 100% sure of that. Tell me where the elevator is in Tahrir square, for example. Go film there and show me
Beautiful video ❤much greetings from Eli , soon we come to Egypt
Hello, it was interesting for me. The prices are unbelievably cheap. In comparison, the tickets here in Munich/Germany are exorbitantly more expensive. Gigi, thank you for the video. Best wishes from Dagi
👍Great Video
I did a double take when you mentioned the Metro to Helwan, my Dad was stationed there, when serving with the Royal Air Force, during WW2, he met Mum, who was Egyptian, and married her in Cairo, in 1945.
Wow, back in the day! Must have been a different world then
More of these videos are def helpful ❤
That's great to hear, I will make more with similar content, thanks JC! 🙏
There aren't security checks at every station (I don't think) but most stations I have been to have them
Good ❤
You should be the minister of transportation for Egypt 😁

Good job 👍 very informative and useful.

Protests...? There are no protests here
Good job
What about HD Spy Glasses when filming in the subway or grocery stores. LOL. But I don't want to bring you in trouble ;) I like your videos!
Haha. Yeah actually, I was stopped by the police while filming this 😆 I just didn't show that because it wasn't relevant to the video. But I showed them my RUclips channel and told them I was making a video about the metro and then they allowed me to go on my way.
We need to go to helwan ..please 🎉
It is historic city that It contains the Sphinx, sulfur waters and beautiful public gardens.
The Sphinx? The Sphinx is in Al Haram, what are you talking about?

how would you rate it in comparison to the subway in New York ?
Hmm, hard to compare. The trains will take you pretty much everywhere in NYC, but not so much in Cairo. There's a lot more walking involved to get to certain places in Cairo, and as mentioned in the video, most of the places tourists want to visit aren't very accessible by the metro right now, but some will be in the future. The most local form of transportation is the microbus, that will get you anywhere you want to go, but it's a lot more difficult (and perhaps intimidating) for tourists to navigate the microbuses. Aside from that the subway system is decent here. They are clean and less smelly than the NYC subway.
Nice video,
I just have one comment about elevators.
line 2 and line 3 have elevators in every station.
Only the line 1 that have this issue.
is there any metro connection with Cairo International airport?
Unfortunately no, not yet anyway. There is talk of building one, but currently there is nothing close enough to easily walk to from the airport to the metro. Thankfully, catching an Uber is easy to do from the airport, and the rides are affordable (around $8 USD to downtown Cairo from Cairo Intl., depending on time and traffic).
@@Gventures thank you

I've used the metro which is very clean modern and efficient BUT you cannot use a credit card to buy a ticket (cash only) AND they don't give change if you have let's say a 100 EGP (1,90 euro) note!
A very nice Egyptian lady bought the ticket for me and an asian couple in front of me because they refused to give us change! So be sure you have the exact amount or as close to it as possible.
I would LOVE you to do a video/s of the arabic institutes in Nasr City.
Oh, I never go to Nasr City, so I know literally nothing about the area or the institutes. Even if I did know something about them, I bet they wouldn't let me film anyway. Those kinds of places are hard to film in. Sorry Jessica
U were in Sadat station and didn't filmed the real Pharaohs statues located in the train stop platform
By the way u should try line no. 3
It is totally different from line no. 1&2
and also u should try Lrt train .. it's is amazing
Because of the side I was on I didn't film the statue. And you know how the police are about filming around that area. I just wanted to film as much as I could without issues. I actually always ride my motorcycle, so I normally don't even take the train. I just did to show the viewers the options
I hope you visit the new administrative capital and the city of the worlds

@@Gfgjtescgjj Yeah i am going there eventually too 😁
I don't think you mentioned it.
@@Gventures I figured that was the reason
I love u 😘😍
What About Tram Alexandria
Well I don't live in Alex. But next time I go there maybe I can make one
The green line 3 is wheelchair accessible on most stations! :)
Best way to answer your questions is a second visit to Cairo Metro stations new and old and ask for the elevator ,, you shall get an answer ,, 😊😊

Does the metro run anywhere close to the airport?
Not close enough. It's easier to just take an Uber for $6-$8 USD
@@Gventuresthe closer station for the airport is adel mansour station at line 3
I just made a video about safety, here's that if you want to watch it:

About the taxi situation.

Go make your own video. Show me where the elevator is in Tahrir Square. Thanks
