No comments about Navratilova! Come on : amazing net play ! The best net player ever! Such a great athlete too, one of the first to introduce fitness to the game then Graf, Williams Sisters got it to an other level! Great era nice to see Martina and Gaby again !

The best female net player ever! And the first true female fitness-athlete. But *_incessantly whiny_* about everything. No decorum...

Sabatini was soooo talented. She moved like a gazelle, was a suberb athlete, tremendous hand-eye coordination, she had every shot and every move in the book. She should have won every Grand Slam title at least twice.

Losing the 91 Wimbledon final was a heartbreaker for Gaby - she had Graf pulled way wide on the deuce court and only needed to hit a routine volley to the ad side to bring up double championship point. That ended Sabatini's recent dominance over Steffi - she had won their 5 previous encounters. Graf won all their future matches except the 92 Lipton SF & Amelia Island final, fittingly in Florida :)
It's surprising Gaby never won at Roland Garros. Her game was perfect for red clay & she had multiple wins over Graf & Seles leading into both the 91 & 92 French Opens.

assindiastignani Sabatini had great talent and flair, probably more so than any other player including Graf. But she was let down by a relatively weak serve and her stamina was also not on a par with Graf's.

+assindiastignani Extremely talented, but definitely a slow mover. Her movement is probably what caused her the most angst on court, along with her serve. At the same time, she lacked self confidence. Most of her wins came in arenas where she was heavily favored by the crowd: NY, Florida, Italy. She fed off that crowd energy and she felt most comfortable, which gave her confidence. However, I do think that had she won the '91 Wimbledon title, she would have gone on to win a good number of Grand Slams later. But after that final, she really wasn't a factor anymore, and her eyes looked like the fire burnt out.

@@senorgato70 I don't remember Sabatini as being slow at all, I always thought she moved very gracefully aroundthe court. But she did seem to have mediocre stamina and looked worn out if the match lasted much longer than an hour.

Booble Yes she was slower than most other players of her time. Even Monica Seles was faster. And I LOVE Gaby but her movement always frustrated me when I saw Graf, Sanchez-Vicario, Seles snagging all the big wins and moving so quickly around the court. Sure, Mary Pierce and Lindsay Davenport were slower but Sabatini needed to aim higher. Also she always seemed flat-footed. Not explosive.

I remember Gabby's game very well. She had one of the best backhands in women's tennis ever. She would've won a lot of Grand Slams if she didn't have such a loopy topspin which you see from so many clay court players. I my opinion this loopy topspin allow your opponent to make a play on the ball and gave away to many possible winners on the faster courts.

I think to be honest Gaby had two main problems, the first was her serve which she never sorted out. The second was her mentality. After she retired, she said she had been so shy and introverted that she basically tanked a number of the bigger matches because she didn't want the limelight. They also found later in her career that she had a form of anaemia.

@zeddeka actually they knew she was anaemic quite early in her career, and this is actually quite treatable with diet and supplements. I think you are spot on with her serve, if she had developed it like the others then she would probably have multiple slams as she would had been able to serve and volley more. Actually I think her serve was more effective in the early part of her career.

There was so much variety in the game back then. Yeah, Gaby should have won some more grand slams, but it's so tough in that era. Having said that, I think she did not push herself as much as she should have. Her serve and foot speed could have been much, much better. She could have cut down on her top spin, could have come to the net more. Even though she had all the physical talent, she did not have the resolve to maximise her gifts. In stark contrast, it is so clear to me (in my humble, subjective opinion) that Graf/Seles/Navratilova/Sanchez are not as talented as Gaby, but they were willing to grind it out off court or on court or both by a huge margin. Accordingly, they won a lot more than Gaby.

Everybody speak about Gaby, of course she's a Latin beauty, in my personal opinion Martina Navratilova is not handsome but I think is attractive, strong body, kind, intelligent, talent sport, speaks very well English, a real champion, and has a tender look....

Gabi was really flat and unhappy at this stage of 1990. She really should have won this match. Great for her that she really turned round her year at the US Open. Martina played a very sharp match here on her worst surface. Always great to see her attacking game.

Sabatini weak serve hurt her career she had one of the worst serves in women tennis.

    • @senorgato70
      @senorgato70 7 лет назад +3

Agreed. Even worse, almost every year, she seemed to try to change her service motion. In 1988, she had a pretty decent serve and she really just needed to improve her consistency. But instead, her coaches seemed to always be fiddling with it, abbreviating her motion, shortening her toss, etc. I think she felt her serve was weak because he coaches kept messing with it. There were small but fundamental changes she needed to make to her serve to make it effective (better tossing-arm extension and finish, more explosion through the legs, and keeping head up through the motion).

Sabatini's serve really wasn't weak; her nerves were weak. In tight situations, her serve would go haywire. When confident, she could serve well; she served beautifully to win the 1994 WTA championship and defeated Lindsey Davenport, one of the greatest returners in the history of women's tennis, in the final in 3 straight sets.

She was also slow and her idiotic topspin used more energy than necessary. Her style of play was rather inefficient.
Hence only one Grand Slam singles title and only two more finals. For comparison, Navratilova had 32 Grand Slam singles finals and 18 wins.
