I adore this movie, I love how it's framed from Diane's relationship with her father and Lloyd, with the title being derived from how Jim insisted that Diane could always "Say Anything" to him, only to learn that he hasn't always been as honest with her. Ultimately, she finds a more compelling connection with Lloyd.

    Lots of good dialogue:
"You'll just get hurt." "Hurt me!"
"I gave her my heart. She gave me this pen."
"Find a girl who looks like her, then dump HER!"
"Do you need me or do you just need someone? I don't care."

This is my favorite movie of all time. Glad you like it. It has also my favorite ending of any movie. I have seen this 10+ times too and it just gets better. Cheers

I love the character arcs in this movie, especially John Mahoney’s character. He easily could’ve been written as a cliche, overbearing father, but he was extremely realistic.

I'm 37 and just watched it for the first time because I was tired of not having the full context of the pop-culture references and wow, yeah, I can't believe how good this movie was and how original and unique it still is. There's a lot of 80s movies I haven't seen and don't get tempted to watch because they look too cheesy. I was expecting something similar here but was really floored at how excellent a movie it is. The entire time I was watching it I was like, um, hey why haven't more MEN been taking notes from this movie. Lloyd's got it all laid out for you. You want love? You want women? You want the real thing? BE LLOYD for the love of God, because women really would like to see a lot more of him around.

A movie I grew up with. I saw it when I was in the 8th grade in the theater. It hits all the usual 80’s teen romcom notes, but what sets it apart is that it truly did have a lot to say about relationships. The characters are extremely well developed and complex. One of the themes that I respect the most is the Diane Court character. Lloyd idealizes her, but as it turns out she has as much, if not more family trauma than he does. She’s not some trophy. She’s a person and has problems and emotions just like everyone else. Lloyd thinks he needs to get her somehow (the way a lot of guys think), but it turns out she needs him just as much.

"I'm just like that...I'm not even like that with anybody" I just was watched this for the first time and completely missed that moment. That's an incredible detail to add to a movie.
Also your review is full of major spoilers

I can't figure out spoiler culture. Have you noticed most modern trailers are spoiling nearly everything, including sometimes inserting the final shot of a movie? And yet a 30+ year-old movie shouldn't be spoiled in a review. That is what I find quite odd, among other things.

Believe it or not, the best line in the movie is delivered by Jeremy Piven. After being broken up with by Dianne, Lloyd visits a group of dude bros hanging out in a gas station parking lot. It is here, Piven's character breaks the forth wall, looking directly into the camera, doing his best to relate to Lloyd. He says, "I got hurt real bad once, I never want to go through that again." It's the way this is delivered, showing that behind these assclown's tomfoolery on a Saturday night are real people who have dealt with their own pain.

Amazing, almost perfect coming of age/teen movie, I agree!
It's up there for me with other classics like Rebel Without a Cause, The Last Picture Show, The Breakfast Club (and few others Hughes' flicks), American Graffiti, Dazed And Confused, American Pie (yes, I know, stupid and crude sex comedy, but I think it is never mean spirited, and actually has some clever, fun and tender moments), and many others.
    Cheers!

I've loved John Cusack since Better Off Dead and somehow I missed this movie, even though I graduated in '90. Now watching it for the first time at 51, I absolutely love it. I have to disagree with your calling it a teen rom-com. I'd say more romance/drama. Great film.

There's a few Frasier/Cheers connections with this movie. It takes place in Seattle (where Frasier takes place), Diane's dad is the same guy who plays Martin Crane (Frasier's dad), and there's a brief scene between Lloyd and a high school guidance counselor played by the actress who played Lilith in both Cheers and Frasier.
I'd like to think that there's a fan theory where Diane's dad and Martin Crane are the same guy, and Diane is actually Frasier's and Niles' long lost kid sister, but of course it doesn't quite fit.

“Say Anything…” is one of those movies that feels like a movie. It never rings true. The dialogue is filled with great movie lines but nobody speaks like that. I’ve seen this movie quite a few times. The first viewing was the best. It’s been fading ever since.

Great video. But there's almost no way the father is a Baby Boomer. With the film being set in 1988, he'd have to be 42 or younger to be one. I'd say he looks closer to 50 than to 40, meaning he was likely born in the late '30s or so. Nitpicking I know, but that would make him a part of the Silent Generation.

    • @LearningaboutMovies
      @LearningaboutMovies  2 года назад

thank you. typically these '80s movies pitted parents against teens, and my shorthand for that is Baby Boom vs. Gen X. You are surely right to say that it can be slippery, and with either group, too. But, I think this film is in the vein of the John Hughes fare, such as Breakfast Club, which is definitely Baby Boom vs. Gen X. Also, of course -- with movie magic -- he might look 50 but he's playing 40-45, or we could imagine that.
