    Statue of Liberty 3 cent stamps were issued from 1954 to 1958, it seems.

    When I was a kid, dad put our farm into the "soil Bank" program with the Fed, and we moved to a rented farm some 15 miles distant. The farmstead had 2 houses, one a huge 3 story job with full cement basement, the other a small farm house with 2 bedrooms, one on the main floor the second upstairs. We, of course, took the small house as the huge house was not finished, it had been moved onto the farmstead but never really completed. The big house was filled with the previous owners junk, among them were hundreds of letters, most with stamps from 1 cent to 3 cents. I used to cut the stamps off, but never really mounted them or even kept them (that's another story of horror and fear!) This was in 1959. My 2 sisters took the upstairs, I slept on a jackknife couch in the living room till my sisters were off to High School, then I got the upstairs where I slept on an old bedspring on the floor covered with old coats to buffer the springs from sticking in my back. We only stayed there 2 years before the haunting chased us out, and nobody has ever lived on the place since.

    A big thumbs Up on this repair, what I really like is the Time you spend on DXing the frequencys when you get done, it shows the quality of that radio's sound, hardly any of your peers do that ~ ~ You Rock.....

    That Ford labeled tube was made by Raytheon. I've seen a lot of Raytheon tubes in old car radios.

    I could be mistaken but that wooden case looks like American Chestnut to me. If so that adds value, since American Chestnuts were wiped out by an Asian virus back mid 20th century. It is beautiful wood and of value to collectors for that reason alone.
    I enjoy your repair videos and want to thank you for all your efforts to produce them. They are informative and entertaining too; in your videos I see radios I would never see otherwise. All the best from extreme north eastern Florida.

    There is a reason two 25Z6 tubes were used here. The 25Z6 is not designed to be a full-wave rectifier tube. It can be used as a voltage doubler or as a half-wave rectifier by strapping the plates and cathodes together.
    6V tubes were used in series-string radios up until 12V tubes were introduced in the 1940s. In order to make up for extra filament string voltage and to help protect the filaments a ballast tube is used. Fada was probably the largest producer of ballast tubes.

    The people who engineered this radio and those who worked on the assembly line in 1939 would likely *FREAK OUT* if they somehow knew at the time that some of their radios would *still* be playing in the 21st Century!!!

    Did you mention that this is a hot-chassis set? To keep it from being an electrocution machine you need to make sure the screws on the bottom and on the knobs are covered with insulating goop.

    • @45AMT
      @45AMT  Год назад +1

      The title says it all. An AA5 is a hot chassis set.

    • @georgegonzalez2476
      @georgegonzalez2476 Год назад

      @@45AMT Not after 1940 or thereabouts. The UL rules came into effect then and radios had to go to an isolated chassis arrangement. The chassis is only RF grounded through like a 0.02uF capacitor and 220K resistor to the line.

    I don't no if this will help you at all since you no way more then I do but when I couldn't find felt dust cover for speakers that had them missing like your speaker ,I found the dome shape covers for speakers in many sizes at Ali express, I ordered some for one of my speakers works perfect ,all you have to do is figure the size you need ,also another you tuber ,I think the allamerican five guy suggested by a piece of felt at Wal-Mart and make my own ,but the dome shape ones from Ali express are great for me,and they were very cheap to buy I think like 40 cents.

    Sideband?

    • @TerryMcKean
      @TerryMcKean 5 лет назад

      It could potentially detect sideband and CW by simply wrapping the still-insulated end of s piece of hook-up wire a couple turns around the wire going to the plate lead of the 6SA7's socket connection, and wrap the other end of that little piece of insulated wire a couple turns around the plate lead of the 6SK7's socket-connection, thereby creating a 'gimmick' capacitive coupling and causing the 6SK7 IF amp stage's input and output to go into regenerative oscillation and that will serve nicely as a BFO and make sideband and code signals copyable. The addition of a suitable potentiometer to control the screen voltage of the 6SK7 would serve as the way to control the amount of regeneration within the IF amp.
      Such a simple and minimally-intrusive mod can be done to most radios like that Fada set, whether AA-5 type or transformer-operated sets... just simply wrapping a bit of insulated hookup wire in place as described makes a quick and effective BFO. The set's existing wires going to the plates of the converter and IF tube socket connections can be insulated or bare, doesn't matter... the insulation on the bit of added hookup wire will prevent direct DC connection between the two plate circuits, yet will capacitively allow the 456 KC IF to get passed back and forth and re-amplified and mixed with the voice or CW tones. :-)

    Do these Era radios suffer from SMD?

    • @richardhz-oi8px
      @richardhz-oi8px 6 лет назад

      I don't believe so, as these use variable caps instead of fixed caps and variable coils. Early coils weren't bad either until they made the caps integral to the transformer instead of mounting mica caps under the chassis.
