    Good examples of troubleshooting decisions. Enjoyed you taking the time to replace the old wiring in the IF.

    Your right about Loctal tubes....I'm working on a Philco 48-482 and had to spray clean the tubes and sockets, then work those tubes in and out.... I didn't know that was a couple of filter caps in that black vessel where the power cord connects to.....I was told that it made use of the power cord for the FM reception... Thanks for the Video.....

    Nice restoration and good troubleshooting on this Philco. One thing I would add is that I've unsoldered the wires on the bakelite block contacts and used a tiny drill bit/paper clip to push out the warmed up tar. That works pretty well.

    Philco and Zenith used that rubber wiring where the rubber would dry up and crack, sometimes falling off. It will drive you nuts! Nice radio!

      Yes I hate this type of wiring but usually I only replace those wires that have already cracked because the ones that didn't wouldn't do so in the future too because there is no mechanical stress on them.

      Atwater-Kent did too. The interesting thing I notced when restoring my A-K cathedral from '32, certain wire colors were more likely to be cracked, or missing insulation than others.
      If I remember correctly, the green, and yellow wires had more insulation than others. Red, and white were next best. If it was a blue, or black wire, chances are it was either bare wire, or close to it.

    You have to be careful of those alignment caps in the back of these Philco cathedrals of this era. Some of them have high voltage on them and can short to the chassis when using a metal tool for adjustment. You don't have to ask how I discovered this some years back.

    I have always had a problem misjudging the common sense of my fellow workers, especially those with the same hobby, or the same training that I have had. I always think they should know what they are doing. This is my failing, not that of those who have worked on the set before me. When I was a Sergeant in the US Army, I received several letters of commendation for saving IG inspections by jumping in and helping out my fellow soldiers when they became stuck on getting things hooked up properly. You see I have a semi photographic memory, once I have seen something installed properly, it just sort of stays with me, this was the case with my initial training as a Field Wireman. I had later cross trained in most every MOS (Job) in communications, and was serving as the NCOIC of a radio teletype rig and the men who ran it. I reported back to the commo shack only to find the fellow who was in charge of the wire section stuck on hooking up the wires to a SB86 switchboard. He simply had one wire reversed, and it was a simple fix, however his inability to get it working would have been a black mark on our IG inspection results. I stepped in, quietly and switched the two wires so it was hooked up properly (something I was trained in 4 years prior) and the unit worked. Our officer in charge saw what I did and after the inspection was over, with a great passing grade, I received a letter of commendation, first of all, my Radio Teletype rig rated 100%, as did the wire section. Such letters may not mean much on the outside, but they are taken into consideration when the promotion board meets.

    I understand the positive factors of the Locktal tubes, but like you, I am not a fan of them. Something that might help you in future dealings with sets that have them is to use a "Flossing Brush" to clean the sockets. They are made to go between your teeth, so they ought to fit in those tiny receptacles for the pins of the tubes.
    Was there a particular reason why you didn't repair / replace the grill cloth on the set?
    Something that occurred to me while you were pointing out some of the problems with the set, was that although the owner said he had replaced the capacitors, if he didn't make sure to put the Outside Foil end of the capacitor to the low impedance side of the circuit, it can introduce problems...especially if near power lines. (AC input to set.)
    You didn't mention anything about doing an alignment on the set...especially after making changes to the IF Can, I would have thought it would be "necessary" to do one. Might also have eliminated the issue at the upper end of the band.
    What chemical do you use to clean out the tube sockets?

    • @melvinturner2284
      @melvinturner2284 3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the advice using a Flossing Brush to clean the sockets. I have had Problems with those sockets. They had a good idea, but those pins are too small for me.

    Being new to the point to point and valve electonics I have a few questions: Did you tune the I F's after you changed that resistor, and the tuner? Could that be the reason those stations are blending on the upper end? Also though it was re capped••• were the direction of the shielding on those caps checked and lastly, were the resistors checked for tolerance?

      Randy: I have two 1939 Three band Zeniths like yours (one a chasis only), both needing refurbishing. In 1941, the family heard of Pearl Harbor, in 1948 it died and 1968 I found it in my granny's closet. I asked if I could take the tubes to 7/11 and check them, did so & the tubes were better than what they sold. I later asked if I could inherit it when I grew up and after the initial shock she said yes. I picked up that radio in 2003 and it now sits in my living room. Email me at theyaretoonosey@gmail.com (mention zenith radio) and I'll send you a few pics. Best regards
