This is a fantastic film and it does really inspire more than one viewing - I've seen it three times because it's really haunting. Matthew Good is wonderful in it, and Mia Wasikowska is mesmerizing.
Yeah, I can't imagine that scene in the movie with the high school girls going cray cray over Uncle Charlie working with Colin Firth. It was kind of cringe even with Matthew but Colin Firth seems more like your mum's big crush. As out of left field that scene is, I think it would have seemed even more so with Colin Firth.
I don't understand the point of this movie. It's just...I've seen it and was like: what have I just seen? Why did I waste my time on this? Is the message: if you're uncle is a psycho and if you've lived a normal life for 18 years and if you face your uncle you'll go on a killing spree as well? What? huh
+Marina Vuletic The film has a dark, gothic vibe which is harder to digest and enjoy. The film also has subtle subplots and symbolism: the incest note between India and Charlie, the curse i.e the pleasure for killing passed down in bloodline (Charlie, and then India), coming of age when you come from a family that has a crime history (India), coping with the death of a loved one (some people go crazy), sexual awakening (re: India) etc. etc. etc. I personally loved the film because of Matthew Goode who made the film very appealing. If it had been another actor to play uncle Charlie, I would've probably said it was just an average movie.
She's lived a normal life bc that's what her parents, particularly her dad, tried their very best to give her, but that's not to say that she is normal. The dad made her hunt, because he knew that she had a dark nature to her, and the best way to keep her from fully realizing that nature was for her to kill animals. There are hints sprinkled throughout the movie that showcase her peculiar nature, which is not unlike Uncle Charlie's nature. She can hear what others cannot hear (e.g. Uncle Charlie calling for her during the funeral), see what others cannot see (painting the interior of the vase, rather than the flowers in the base, which is what a normal person would paint), she's very sensitive to the touch (hence why she flinches when her mom and auntie Gin try to touch her, and ESPECIALLY when Charlie put his arm over her and gently touches her head with his when they were playing the piano), and when she saw the dead body of Mrs. McGarrick, instead of calling the police right away, she just stares and observes the body with intrigue and never reports it. In the letters Uncle Charlie sent her, she finds out he shares the same characteristics as her. She even admits it in the playground to Whip, through that photograph metaphor. It's like she's a pot of boiling water, and the parents were the lid that kept her from overflowing, but once the dad died and uncle Charlie came in, that lid flew off and she became what she was predestined to be: a murderer. It's part of her nature, regardless of the nurturing the parents did. The uncle just made her realize it.
He's gorgeous.

+roraio~ 100% agreed with you! Matthew Goode was superb in this movie and I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the role of uncle Charlie.
