invaluable tool. Great for younger & high school refs. Official does good job communicating with the table & coaches. His ability to communicate has allowed him to gain the trust of the coaches. Good presence, good voice & good mechanics. I didnt like some of the judgment calls but camera angle may not be best and validity of the calls is not the purpose of the video. This was easy game with the coaches. they never said a word. they accepted all calls from from an obviously respected official in that area. Really nice learning tool. Would like to see more of these videos when coaches are tougher to deal with & more commo is needed. Overall, really good job.
I officiated for 3 years in the early 90s. We were less vocal, but more demonstrative with our calls. I like his demeanor, and his positioning. As a coach for more than 20 years I appreciate how he is talking to the players and the coaches. Makes himself available after calls, and he has excellent positioning (one of my biggest complaints with many officials, especially young ones and very old ones).
I'm brand new to basketball, but have a LOT of officiating experience in other sports. This was invaluable for me. Not just what to look for in pregame, but the way you worked with obviously inexperienced scorekeepers, talking to coaches briefly but professionally... this is just a masterclass in game management, specific to basketball, and I learned something new from every second.
I have been doing baseball for a long time, and picked up basketball last year. I love the level of confidence you have on the floor. I am like that with baseball, and hope to get there one day with hoops. Great video
Thank you. I'm sure you will get there, as you already know what you're in pursuit of. Always remember, that: the "game" wants you to be confident. wants you to have certainty. All of the stakeholders feel better about it when you do. So, our goal confident and assertive administration of the game, but always a willingness to admit mistake as appropriate.
Thanks for the video. Just started officiating (today was first day!) and this has been extremely beneficial. Will put some of these methods into practice.
Great resource. I appreciate the "jersey Grab" and "head contact" added verbiage. It helps to provide instant feedback to the coaches and players and also humanizes us too. We aren't robots (at least I don't want my officials to be). Some personality is welcome and most coaches appreciate the added communication.
The biggest thing that stood out to me was your reminder to the coaches about the "timeout area" for timeouts. This is something I don't see enforced often, and I don't focus on as much as I should (as a first-year official), so it was nice to see someone actually enforce it....great video
What a novel concept Greg (this is Donald BTW from my regular user name)! I love hearing how you speak to people. The main take away from this is the communication is not for the fans but for everyone on the floor. The clearer you communicate, the smoother a game will run. This video is a keeper!
Thanks for posting this video. I will use this video to improve on my pregame talk to team captains and coaches. And alot more. Good Job. Keep up the good work.
Great video. Lots of good examples to watch for -- talk with players, preliminary report and signal, good communication on location and disposition of ball.
Call at about 430p didn't look like white 13 came forward, lead passed on it and trail was straight lined so would you really recommend the trail making that call unless it was significant and obvious and the lead missed it?
I’m new official, I hate being in front of the crowd, and I struggle in social situations. I’ve watched this video 20+ times now and I just do my best impression of this guy every game. I’m a better official when I pretend to be him.
Love to hear that. A big part of being comfortable on the court is projecting strength and confidence even when it may not be there. The saying does apply here, fake it till you make it.
Those timeouts you give to black are timeout requests I would miss to my hearing impairment. Where that coach is at when you’re table side is my “blind spot” in my hearing behind me and to my right. Those are the situations I refer to in my email I sent last month.
New official here and hoping maybe someone see this comment. Thank you for this and all your officiating videos. My question is why on the offensive fouls, I would think are a charge call.. do you report to the table as "player" and not "charge"? What if it were a blocking violation? Would you still report it as just "personal"? Thank you
Nicely done Greg! That said though, why don't they go with 3 man crews in California like most places do, and do you think that all states will eventually start using a Shot Clock? Have a great season if you get to work? As for me, I've lost all but 2 of my games.
Some good tips for any official and especially helpful with younger officials. Problems come when where NFHS mechanics are being used when another area may be using IAABO 2 Person. The walk and talk on reporting is contrary to either sets of mechanics. I assume the official is miked and the volume hasn't been properly modulated so he sounds very loud all the time which hopefully isn't his usual. His time out call where he says full to the coach is better when he asks "Is it 30?" By rule all time outs are 60 unless the coach states a 30. This is NFHS game some there is no full or half. He does use some excellent management techniques but still can't get the teams to break their huddles after time out.
+Thomas Fish You are on the money there. Like at 10:00 when the officials are confirming the score books match at the table for halftime, only to see that the guest book keeper is talking with his buddy and clearly not paying attention at all to the official. Also at 19:48 when he stands to argue the official's call of allowing a time out during a scrum for the ball (white clearly had sole possession when the timeout was called). Totally out of line for a score keeper to visibly protest calls.
This Referee must love to hear himself as well as blowing his whistle. The other Referee hasn't blown his whistleyet, or this video is focusing on the one talkative Referee. I was a Registered Michigan High School Basketball Referee from 1999-2002. This was my first time ever Officiating basketball games. Yes I played Middle School; High School & College Basketball. I played for two separate High Schools & three separate Colleges. I can honestly say that I was an Excellent Referee. Not perfect, but consistently with my Primary Area Calling. Today I am a Registered Virginia High School Basketball Referee. This will be my first time Officiating basketball games in Virginia. I have been told by my Training Clinic Basketball Referee received a report on me after Officiating some Summer League Basketball Games. The report said that I am a "HARD REFEREE." I asked my Training Clinic Basketball Referee what he meant by HARD? His replied that I have be en trained correctly. In Michigan as in Virginia, I have noticed that older Officials are to Dogmatic with their approach. I strive to be approachable & relaxed. I strive not to talk down to the Scorer's Table; Coaches & Players. I don't talk loud when addressing the Scorer's Table; Coaches & Players. The only time which my voice rises, when reporting to the Scorer's Table. This video and so many many others, has/Is continuing preparing me for this coming Season.Thanks.
Why is it so many High Schools have Gyms that are TOO SMALL to play Basketball in them safely? There should be AT LEAST 3+ whole feet of SIDELINE OOB's area around the whole court just for Throw In's. And there needs to be MORE open space underneath the goal for player safety with as fast and as hard as the players go to the hoop. I get so sick of seeing kids run into the walls under the basket and crowded along the sidelines. They give the 3 Feet along the Sidelines in Football to help keep collisions of Players and Bench Personnel safe, but not in basketball. But they won't even consider the RULES or the LOGISTICS of Basketball beyond In Bounds Court Dimensions when making a building meant to hold Basketball Games. But what's more... How is a Ref supposed to get a good look at the best possible angles if he cannot get OFF the Court to obtain that angle? And Officials Clinic tells you to get DEEP on the Baseline to best officiate the Lane. And on a quick steal into transition if you have nowhere to go to be OFF the Court not only are you potentially affecting the play but you cannot get the angle you need to properly cover the play. It's bad enough they won't pay to have 3 officials on a High School game. They really think 2 sets of eyes can watch 10 quickly moving body's (not to mention these are fast athletes not slow zombies) AND watch the Clock AND monitor the Score AND handle the Coaches AND make sure the sidelines and baseline are clear of obstructions/fans/cheerleaders etc... and call the game at a high level? Sure. But don't worry. They'll make up for all that by just abusing the undermanned officials for when they are a bit overwhelmed with too much stuff to do.
It’s just interesting I guess if the player is in your primary as a trial then goes out of your primary and you follow the play for a bit until your partner picks it up I guess it fine. But otherwise it’s good to trust your partner and talk about that. As a ref myself I wouldn’t want someone taking a call that I had better look on, and there are other parts of the floor that you should be looking(your primary)at to watch for off ball fouls and such. But otherwise great job it’s fun to watch you ref and talk to the players and your partner!
Of course we are in complete agreement. Seeing plays on video where one's discipline was not strong are always a disappointment and an opportunity to learn. That's why game video analysis is the best way to improve as a basketball official.
Hi Lacy. Thanks for viewing. Purpose of the video is focus on communication. That being said... The block call. Hrm. Not a great call. 2 person secondary defender give the Lead first crack, but stay connected as Trail. There may be need of a whistle and none comes from the Lead. The 3 seconds call: the video is a bit truncated, but Lead had the previous matchup closer to the endline. The lane is the action area here, with no competitive matchups in Trails area. Both officials in 2 person should officiate this action.
18.03 the official makes a common foul call then stands with his back to the scorers table during administration of the free throw, then grants a time-out
Hi. I noticed that you handed a CD inside an envelope to each coach for copy of the game. Do you pre-stamp and address it so they can mail it you? How do you go about collecting it? I want to start doing that.
Hi Sally! Yes that is what I did in this instance. I knew that the home coach did NOT use an online video service like Hudl or Krossover going in. It is great to have DVD mailers prepared if you know that may be an option going in, but these days (2018) go into your game with 98% certainty that they game will be available online. Also, don't go crazy getting film of every game. You'll go nuts and burn out. Get a film a week or so and study that. There is too much of a good thing.

+A Better Official ahhh yup I saw that in the nfhs rules book, here I tx they have a change to that rule 2 yrs ago. 2 handed reported but just here in tx I guess. I'd prefer that 1 handed. and u chop the clock differently also. other than that good calling, very clear and loud.
J Cole I found it on thsboa arbiter sports, tx exemptions current for 2015 thru present, #5 was simple it just says 2 handed used for foul reporting. it also says we are allowed to walk while reporting fouls and our 2 man positions during timeouts is different from nfhs.
Absolutely deplore white talk to white black talk to black no crosstalk. 1 it's not a rule, only Unsporting talk is. By saying this you're actually stifling sportsmanship of white helping black up or saying good play etc. Get it out of your pregame please. My pregame is communicate in a sportsmanlike manner with each other unless you can't, in which case we'll step in.
10:46 - I love it when the official who's 30 feet away from the play calls a foul. Also, as already noted in the comments....a terrible explanation. Why was it a terrible explanation? Because he was too far away to make that call.
Oh look, here we go again. 13:50 - We're at half court and........Heaven's to Betsy! My favorite part is the sprint while blowing the whistle to make it look like he was closer when he made the call. LOL
Even at the end of the video - 21:31 - a ticky tacky call from behind and (of course) from a bad angle that knocks #35 out of the game. It's stuff like this that give officials in all sports a bad name. Getting whistle happy and calling what you think you maybe would've seen if you had a better angle is not good officiating. I'm sorry. On the other hand, I do like most of the communication and think it certainly helps the official's cause for getting by with the weird calls...it helped keep things under control.
I'd love to see your video, of you reffing, submitted on RUclips for all to see and critique. Let me know when it's up so I can come on here and tell you how horrible you did.
Were you protecting your partner? So many calls out of your PCA. Strong whistle. Great voice. But way too showy and too much verbiage. You don't stop the clock every time especially on timeouts. Assuming your IABBO our board would place you in panel 3. Panel 1 is top Panel 6 is for probationary.
Christ he's annoying ive never seen this many calls it's like every 5 seconds he's calling something he loves his job a little too much hell hes only a high school ref.
Coaching one side and being the man in the middle are totally different pressure pots. I've been both and reffing has me aging a little quicker than I care to admit.
invaluable tool. Great for younger & high school refs. Official does good job communicating with the table & coaches. His ability to communicate has allowed him to gain the trust of the coaches. ❤
Thanks for the video. Just started officiating (today was first day!) and this has been extremely beneficial. Will put some of these methods into practice.
bgmosssr So good to hear. lots of videos here for new officials.
Good Communication Skills Between Coaches, Players and Table Official's. Good Luck and more Power to your Channel.

Thanks for posting this video. I will use this video to improve on my pregame talk to team captains and coaches. And alot more. Good Job. Keep up the good work.
14:10 obviously we don’t have as good of an angle as you do, but this guy looked to be late to establishing position before the offender took his step
Great video. Lots of good examples to watch for -- talk with players, preliminary report and signal, good communication on location and disposition of ball.
Thanks!
Very helpful Craig. You really show the importance of verbalizing the calls o_o
I love these mic’d up videos, whichever level it is
Good stuff. Def took a few things from this. Aaron must have a broken whistle 😂😂😂😂.
Aaron whistles on the editing room floor!
Thank you my classes now getting ready for my on court this weekend. This definitely helped a lot
Great job man we gotta talk about that call at 8:20 😂 defender was still moving but overall great job man

Amazing game management skill. Thank you very much.
Been officiating for a very long time, still find every single second use for.
More of these please!!!!!
Kool Beans !

My guy calling everything 😂 his partner on coast mode
Editing of the video certainly makes it seem like that was the case
I subscribed because I'm trying to elevate my officiating. Thx

this is some nitpicking bs right here lol
Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching!
You are the Man
You need both refs with mics!
+Greg Austin (Referee 99) done!
Did you notice the behavior of the guest book keeper?
+Thomas Fish You are on the money there. That is the smallest gym in our area.
Good. At least there is that. All of our High School Gyms are good here but we have some absolutely terrible Middle School gyms.
what confuses me is that even thou the NFHS write's the rules, rules are not consistent in every state especially here in Missouri under MSHSAA
how so???
I love this!!!!
+Greg Austin (Referee 99) I believe ALL officials can benefit from seeing this communication throughout the game. Thank you! Definitely helps me.
At the 15:23 mark of the video is this a close guarding count and violation?
How would you call a block in the trail position when the ball wasn’t in your view? Shouldn’t that have been the lead’s call looked like his area.
Fair Point.
It’s just interesting I guess if the player is in your primary as a trial then goes out of your primary and you follow the play for a bit until your partner picks it up I guess it fine. Is it me or did you almost have a Blarge at the 14:30 mark? If so, did you guys talk about it? play came from your area and you made the call.
It's only a blarge if we recognize it!! LOL.
The early block call..... and the 3 seconds were in the leads space. Or no... he made calls that were not his call. New official curios. Thx
Hi Lacy. Thanks for viewing. Purpose of the video is focus on communication. That being said... The block call. Hrm. Not a great call. 2 person secondary defender give the Lead first crack, but stay connected as Trail. There may be need of a whistle and none comes from the Lead.

Thanks positon of trail official during administration of free throws ? Has his back to scorers table ? Thoughts on this position?
18.03 the official makes a common foul call then stands with his back to the scorers table during administration of the free throw, then grants a time-out
Bob Morris Confused. 2-person NFHS mechanics has the calling official tableside. It was changed a few years ago.
+A Better Official correct, u must turn around after 1st free throw to clear subs. I dont see the issue here.
Show the proper mechanic is that the trailer official be table side during both free throws
+Simon Avila false for 2 person mechanics, according to rules.
4:52 called a 3 seconds in the key looks to me like it was only 2 or 2 and a half
Fair enough. I have him entering a 4:47 and whistle at 4:50.
Big Smooth!!!!
Did you hand them postage paid envelopes and ask for DVDs @2:00?
Hi, yes. Postage paid DVD mailers. I knew that both coaches did not do online posting, so DVDs were the way to go.
Bob, at what time?
18.03 the official makes a common foul call then stands with his back to the scorers table during administration of the free throw, then grants a time-out
u make number call outs to the tabke with 1 hand mechanics???
Lorenzo, NFHS mechanics dictate one handed reporting.
Wish we had 2 handed reporting. Yeah my chop is a hybrid of NFHS and NCAA-W.
Lorenzo Valdez Reference the rule change stating two handed reporting is what you do in Texas now?
J Cole I found it on thsboa arbiter sports, tx exemptions current for 2015 thru present, #5 was simple it just says 2 handed used for foul reporting. it also says we are allowed to walk while reporting fouls and our 2 man positions during timeouts is different from nfhs.
2 person boys varsity?? Oof

It was worse at 13:50. He was at half court and calling a foul under the basket. Shake my head.
you think you can do better? join the local assoication and sign up to ref.

you dont stop the clock on timeouts? you realize that makes no sense right?
Christ he's annoying ive never seen this many calls it's like every 5 seconds he's calling something he loves his job a little too much hell hes only a high school ref.
you think you can do better? put your money where your mouth is and sign up to ref and join your local association. we need good refs.
Hi Sammi, the goal was to get just the communication parts, so I can understand why you would say that.
hes not a good ref ive been coaching for 13 plus yr and i can do better
Excellent. See you on the court.
That is a very ignorant sounding comment. Put on the gear and prepare to be humbled..
Coaching one side and being the man in the middle are totally different pressure pots. I've been both and reffing has me aging a little quicker than I care to admit.
