We know stuff because we’ve lived with these artists for decades. We’ve seen them in concert. We’ve watched them mature. And album notes were a thing that could win awards.
We of the boomer gen don't worry about sensitivities, so say what you want the way you want to say it, we can take it. Really digging your hip groovy reviews man!
Exactly!
So true, we are tough as nails!
@@womanonthinice1276No you aren’t- the Silent Generation was.
Back in the day preteen and teenagers used to collect albums to get to know the artists that we liked.During that era of album oriented rock there was very little fillers as the songs would blend in on an album so it was worth listening to the complete album.
That moment you realize whoever “Nineteen” was, is probably collecting Social Security today!
😂
You can say I’m from now and then. A boomer. An old guy still kickin. Steely Dan, “Aja”.
The Cuervo Gold, fine Colombian make tonight a wonderful thing. 😊
Musical acts of my period were performers first. Many frequently performed for years before their first album was released. So not only did we become familiar with them before they were famous, they honed their skills by performing. In order to hear their music we had to go see them. So naturally we gained a connection with the artists. They were more accessible and became more polished as performers and musicians. Sometimes we got to know many of them personally. Sometimes they live next door or close by to us. People of my age, again, in order to hear music, had to go to many concerts; often weekly, some of us daily. There was no Roon, Spotify, or Tidal. There was radio, which played a limited list of performers, there were concerts, or you bought their records when they were finally released. By the time I was 30 I had seen close to 500 live musical performers. So perhaps now you can see how and why we oldsters are so critical of today's so called "artists" because 99% of them are not. They are mostly money hungry, talent challenged, attention seeking thieves without an original musical thought in their heads.
Love your reaction Ace.😅
That instrument is a diatonic harmonica, played by Toots Thielman, already an older gentleman when this was recorded.
Ace please try The Royal Scam by Steely Dan. The song is about people that left Puerto Rico for New York City believing they would find a better life. I believe the time. Was a 1970s. New York City was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time. It’s an amazing song by one of the greatest bands. Love your reactions.
Ace us older folks..I was born in he early 50's.. aren't ashamed of our age and you can call us whatever you want..lol...
As with today's younger folks..there are those that music was their first love and because we experienced the musical revolution can tell you many things about what you're hearing and the bands...for instance this could be considered lounge music...something like a jazz club where the listeners were all laid-back... and like the song lyrics.. he's trying to connect to a younger person..sayng 'we have nothing in common..we can't talk at all'... however we're learning some younger folks are willing to listen and if nothing else.. experience vicariously from our lives...
Keep learning young man and do consider giving your commenters some feedback...one thng we do understand is good manners...
🌿🌿🌿
Another super good and fun reaction, thank you Ace! You always make great comments and I can see how this got you moving -- it did me too brother!
There are so so many great Steely Dan songs, you've just scratched the surface. Try Glamour Profession, Josie, Green Earrings, FM (No Static), Dr. Wu, Kid Charlemagne, Monkey in Your Soul, Gaucho, Third World Man. And Donald Fagen (keyboards, vocals and co-writer) has incredible solo stuff as well: Trans Island Skyway, The Nightfly, Morph the Cat, the incredible incredible Florida Room... I can go on and on!
The instrument you are asking about is a Melodica, it's like a keyboard harmonica.
Please hit us up with another Steely Dan classic "FM" (No Static at All). Luv your energy, Ace. You don't miss a beat and are soooo entertaining!!!
Actually Sir, there are people of your generation who take the time to find out about their favorite artists. My 22 yo daughter for one, along with a few others I know.
Slinky Thing from lead singer Donald Fagen. When he is much older, same theme. You play the Dan, we will be here.
Wondered if you are getting any bad weather from all of the tropical storms and stuff? I look forward to hearing these reviews, they sure take me back to the days when I had a waistline and could dance for hours. and yes, I would listen to albums while reading the liner to learn the words - and they have stayed with me more than I realized. It was a different era with no social media, listening to the radio under the pillow way past bedtime. Life wasn't perfect back then - don't get me wrong - but we had great music. Cuervo Gold and fine Columbian still makes the night a wonderful thing.
Check out Steely Dan "FM no static at all".
Yassss!!!!! My favorite by Steely Dan!!
I'll give you this old mans opinion, the music from my time was organic. No cheating, other than multi tracking. It was easier to make amazing music when you didn't have the distractions of social media and the internet.
Ace, head over to Donald Fagen's solo albums (although Becker produced some of them) and in particular I think you would like his album The Nightfly and specifically the songs "I.G.Y." "The Goodbye Look" "Maxine"...hell, the whole damn album.
Thanks for the Dan!
That's right, this is that music that you chill and sip your drink to. Steely Dan,simply incredible band. My favorite...Peg.
Enjoy the journey of steely Dan.
That was a synthesizer that sounded like a harmonica.
"The Cuervo Gold, the fine Columbian, make tonight a wonderful thing." (Cocaine and Tequila - yup 1980's for sure)
“Fine Columbian” could refer to “Colombian Gold”… cannabis.
Check out Home at Last, or Pretzel Logic.
I can only speak for myself and not my generation. (baby boomer) When I got into a band such as Steely Dan I would buy their ablum (vinyl) take it home and read the "liner notes" to see who all played on the album. Steely Dan used to hire "studio" musicians and I'm talking the best of the best from various genre's. Believe it or not.... there were more than 40 musicians that contributed to this album. Take care.
It's hey 45 for some of us.
No, we don't get offended about way back then. Truth.
67 here.
I was 19 when this song came out. 😂
When you're talking to a younger person, and they don't know Aretha Franklin, you know you don't have much in common in music. Every year, the world
changes, and it's hard to relate to some of the newer culture's music, food, views. We're Just Growing Older (laugh).
Its about a old guy fooling with a 19 year old.
wha t you're talking of is true but in my experience, it was often the 'album covers' that gave and included precise notes of the artists, producer and engineering and some statistics...just sayin':)
All I will say is "Babaylon Sisters" check it out
That was such a fun reaction man. Came out when I was in high school and I was in too much harder stuff and so while I always love to Steely Dan because they were so good, this just sounded interesting to me musically but not a whole lot more.
By the time I've been in college for a year too and really checking out the music seeing and starting to play in bands and things like that, I already saw how it really wasn't I'm with how things were changing with R&B, and it is just amazing how well it grooves like that. It's just so laid-back.
Aĵa is also a killer track in this same vein although even more funky, but I can't remember if you've already done that one.
Im a 70s kid, i dont get offended. My pronouns are, I dont give a crap!
You found your band...yeah, they're cool af, you're not wrong...hearing this in a grocery store is funny af, if you understand the lyrics
Dude… I’m GenX. Sensitive? Do you honestly think there’s a single one of us who could give a flying eff what anyone says about us lol? We rode bicycles off ramps with no helmets. Go ahead. Speak your thing, bubba.😊
You should check out Golden Country by REO Speedwagon live great lyrics hard guitar
