Dave has been an inspiration to me since his 1972 800 meter Olympic come from behind victory. I'm 74 and I still watch that race from time to time when I'm dealing with difficulties. He is a genuinely humble person as well.
Every now and then you see a video on RUclips which makes you feel that despite the cavalcade of trash that YT brings into the world maybe it's good that it exists after all because of rare & precious gems like this.
So delightful to see Mr. Wottle and my condolences to his daughter and family. Thank you, Terri, for sharing this touching interview with us, lifetime admirers of Mr. Wottle!
I'm here a year after the posting, but nice to see Dave is still around and looking good. Short comment on 1972 Olympics - I was always intrigued by the look of indifference Dave displayed just after crossing the finish line; I'm imagining him thinking "OK, race over, time for a beer". No dramatic hootin' and hollerin' for the TV audience's amusement. Best wishes to all back there in Ohio.
Dave we admire you. Love you, respect you for your fantastic, amazing, and awe inspiring achievement, from last to first, unbelievable unmatched in entire Olympic history ,you will always be remembered with love from Kerala, India
Went through the same with my wife, six years after adopting a child legally from another country. You have children to care for .They come first.Your sorrow takes a bit of a back seat.
Every time I want to get inspired and get out and run I watch Daves Olympic run.....He's got one Kenyon!!... Grew up in your neck of the woods. CENTRAL CATH CANTON 1967. SEEN THAT RUN atleast 1000 times. Your still lookin good. Bless you and stay safe.
I watch that race over and over and over and still get chills.....I was in the hospital at age 18 - the day after surgery (from a pole vault injury ) and the day after my birthday when the race was run...... Magical
Dave Wottle, He is my HERO! Never give up! Greetings from Uruguay
I am 67 now - Wottle’s 72 race was AMAZING - an incredible inspiration.
