  • Phase transformations can come in different flavors (diffusion vs no diffusion) (change in composition or not) (metastable states etc). However, they all include nucleation from a parent phase and growth. Nucleation can occur along edges or impurities and this would be heterogeneous or within the bulk of the sample and this would be homogeneous nucleation. Here we do a demonstration derivation of the change in Gibbs free energy for transformation taking into account volumetric change in Gibbs energy as well as surface energy.

What does the Gibbs free energy mean in terms of heat and temperature? Does it mean I would have to cool the material I'm trying to solidify more to overwin the energy barrier or heat the material up just a slightly little bit?
