    Carpet scraps nailed/screwed to a 2x4 frame work great also.
    If you can source wool carpet with burlap backing (carpet store dumpsters) it make a great walkway or base for planting on Slopes. It stays pretty moist once wet and seeds root in nicely.
    It will eventually decompose (if wool and burlap) dont use nylon or other synthetic carpet.

    I'm from northen Sweden, and we have down to -30 C in the winter. The liquids in your face freezes at that temp. The thing with cold is that air actually heats you up. Fluffy clothes with windprotecktion keeps you REALLY warm. Better than a thick solid medium. So, the skirt-thing is that the wind doesnt get in there, and the still air serve as coldprotection. To keep really warm you put on several layers, lots of wool that is fluffy and thereby heatpresevant. BUT a single windprotector with still hot air inside will keep you warm. Like animalskin. Fur is fluffy and the animal keeps warm because the air inside the hair doesnt move. Thats why you wear the fur on the outside, instead of in. Hair isnt solid. Skin is.
    Exposion to wind kills you faster than extreme cold. Everyone here knows it.
    A bit of ramling, but the key is that protection from the wind is more important than thick solid walls. Even snow is protection, is keeps the wind from reaching the solid body aka the house.

      We live in an area with a lot of snow in winter. In our old farmhouse, one could feel that it was warmer when the snow was deeper. It also insulates the ground, and plants survive that would not without snow cover.

    You are lucky that it is as warm as it is there. My oldest son and his family, my daughter and her two young children and my wife and I are living in camp trailers for the winter while we build our homes here. We are about 12 miles west of Helena MT almost on the Continental Divide. We have had snow and freezing temps for weeks. One foundation is in and another gets poured tomorrow, Friday. We skirted all the trailers with 2 inch foam board and sealed all the seams with tape or foam spray.. I bought a bunch of "thermocubes", outlets that turn on the space heaters under the trailers at 35 degrees and shuts off power at 47 degrees. They work nice. Bought a 40 foot conex to keep all of our personal belongings in while building. Several years of canning food stuffs in there also, so keeping it above freezing is essential. I see what you guys are doing and it makes me want to come give a hand, (lots of building experience), but probably should build my own house first. Then garden, well, entire homestead from scratch. Keep up the great work! Always look forward to your video's.

    Hi guys I think you have done what you want to do. But I wanted to recommend Reflectix it's a reflective bubble wrap. and emergency blankets . I have a large offroad tent trailer and we camp at high altitude locations that go Sub-Zero at night. I found putting emergency blankets like foil under the bed cushions on the plywood stopped the cold coming up and heat loss.also made panels for all the bunk end window with reflectix. and covered the bunk ends and dinette slide out emergency tarps foil lined tarps. And like you said used a multi folded tarp to skirt the trailer. Just sharing what worked for me. Take care, stay warm . Just do what you need or want to do. And thank you for taking the time to share.😀👍 Oh I would love to have your shop.👍👍👍

    • @Berkeloid0
      @Berkeloid0 4 года назад

      @@Jodi9810 What went wrong with the lamp to cause the fire to start? Given that they aren't designed to catch fire, I'm curious how they might do so if they are correctly installed (e.g. such that nothing flammable can come into contact with them).

    • @Jodi9810
      @Jodi9810 4 года назад

      Berkeloid It was a bathroom heat lamp built into the ceiling, which was on the top floor of the house so it was mounted up in the attic area (1960-built house). We think it got left on for several hours, and I guess it got some of the insulation material or something smoldering. We heard a crackling sound overhead so my husband popped his head up thru the attic access door and saw the roof on fire. I'm not sure how similar our scenario was to the types of heat lamps that you all might use on farms (we're not homesteaders).

And your openness and vulnerability probably helped viewers who might be going through something similar). But it broke my heart a little bit to hear how apologetic you were in portions of the video. You guys have taken on a huge challenge and I think you're tackling it with a lot of grace. Also, it probably feels like a long time (especially sleeping in a cold trailer, now that winter is basically here!), but it's really such a short time since you moved to your property that had so much needing to be done. Do you ever go back and watch your videos documenting all the projects you've completed? Be kind to yourselves - you deserve it.

    I have a camper trailer out in Maine. Hadn’t thought of skirting it but that certainly seems like a worthwhile project.
    My plan is to put a wood stove in it for heat and hot water. I won’t be using any of the existing tanks and piping. Also replacing the toilet with a bucket setup. (Emptying into an outhouse).
    So I’ll be watching your comfort levels this winter before I start my own project.
    You might want to consider buying a few extra sheets of insulation board and use it as flooring, put a throw carpet over it.

Up there you definitely needed to take measures to keep warm. We did exactly the same thing with the front window. In warm weather we just stored the foam under the camper to use the next yr. We also used plastic on the inside of the windows to cut down on drafts. We also put heat tape on our sewer pipe then put that in a larger drain pipe. Hey I’ve really enjoy this video! Don’t need to apologize for the less talking! One of our favorite RUclips dosent say a word and just work on his cabin in the wood ;)
    We’re doing a major reno ourselves bringing back to live an abandoned house and we’ve been at it for 2 1/2 years building takes time. And what we find is that taking things slowly allow us to refine our vision ;) and that too is part of the building process!

    As long as you have “dead airspace” under the camper you will sleep A LOT warmer. That is how the sheeting works in the evening parks.

    It does matter what it looks like as long as it keeps you warm. Great job, great use of scrap.

    I use those same lamps under my mobile home aimed at the main water connection during freezing temps and it has been a lifesaver!

    Great job getting the camper insulated! Went through the same thing with our 27 foot Rockwood last winter.

    If you can get some electric mattress pads they really help I'm living in a very similar camper and it really helps. It warms the draft as it comes up and keeps the air your in warm. You can also put it on your little couch and it helps while your sitting. I totally understand living in an icebox lol...best wishes beautiful people!!!
