  • Mineral's cleavage is one of the hardest property to see and understand.
With this video I would like to help everybody who are trying to identify minerals using the cleavage as a property.

I just have to say, this really makes me want to collect minerals again. I know I have some pyrite and maybe olivine from middle school. There was a gem/mineral show that we got extra credit for going to. One thing that I didn't necessarily learn, but help visualize, was how muscovite is a sheet silicate. You can very easily tell it has a sheet structure with how it cleaves. Secondly, I didn't realize cleavage was shown by breaking the mineral. I always assumed it was how the planes of the minerals natural structure was. Lastly, Calcite really surprised me with how uniform its cleavage was. Evan Motley GOL 105, V-1.

    - I was confused about how to count the cleavage planes until you explained that parallel sides count as one and cleavage planes themselves are considered planes when they shine at the same time---that was very helpful! I think my favorite mineral break in this video was the gypsum---it looked like plastic to me from the beginning but it surprised me that it also had the same bendy feature that a lot of plastic has. I also liked watching you practically peel the muscovite---it was mesmerizing for me! The sound was also pretty cool. (:

The Three things I learned are:
    1. To observe cleavage one has to break it.
    2. Cleavage is repeated when broken, the faces will be seen as shinny, flat smooth
    3. The cleavage ways or numbers will depend on whether the mineral shows good, perfect, shinny, flat, smooth irregular faces example: Mica is flat, shinny, repeats, perfect cleavage one way.
