Most people don't respond well to negative reinforcement, it just makes them negative. Better to validate what is good about a person, and enable the tools they have to utilize their gifts.

Well, if you tell the kid he doesn't have to do the dishes that day, it is still a reward. I am confused at why do we need to classify the reinforcement into adding and taking away, since it is still a reward being applied?

That's exactly what confuses me sometimes. Like with the example of nagging. I know it's considered negative reinforcement because you're trying to get someone to perform a behavior, and once they do the nagging will go away, i.e. removing a stimulus to encourage cleaning, but couldn't it also be considered positive punishment? As in, you're trying to discourage their messy behavior by introducing the stimulus of nagging? Sometimes it's tough to determine, and takes a lot of thought. What helps me in some cases is to consider if a stimulus is being added or removed AFTER the behavior.
