    Instead of tarps, we covered my leaking roof with swimming pool liner. They are stronger material, and come in very large sizes. Mine has held up very well for 5 years.
    Also, maybe instead of dehumidifiers, just install a wood burning heater to dry up the damp. And open some windows.
    Best wishes from Canada.

      @JedRichards 2 дня назад +14

      You can’t beat a wood burner for this kind of application 👍
      If it has a good draw, it’s literally sucking the wet air out of the house and out the chimney, while drying stuff out with heat too

    • @emsnewssupkis6453
      @emsnewssupkis6453 2 дня назад +7

      YES swimming pool covers are best. I spent more than half a century saving 100 year plus old buildings and roof work is #1 and getting proper tarps is the first step! All else is easier after the roof is attended to!

  • @MsNattsuko
    @MsNattsuko 3 дня назад +256

    I think for now, being the time of year we're in, you should just get a tonne of the biggest tarps you can and cover the roof up entirely. It wont make it 100% waterproof but it will help so much with water ingress! That's what my landlady did on my house when it was being renovated

    • @MsNattsuko
      @MsNattsuko 3 дня назад +20

      Also, if you have gaps in the guttering, just bodge them with some sealant for now until you replace them or repair them properly 💖 It'll see you through the next few months of really wet weather

    • @creardon2757
      @creardon2757 3 дня назад +26

      Yes, you need huge heavy-duty tarps. You can order them online from caravan supply places. The biggest one we have is 20'x40'.

    I'm not a builder but I have lived in a lot of cold damp houses - my advice - get a woodburning stove at each end ASAP and keep them in 24/7 for a few weeks - you will be toasty and house will be lovely and dry. The investment will last a lifetime.

    One word of advice, with a dog who loves to play fetch so much. Be very careful later when you start to scrape paint. Make sure that no lead based paint chips get on anything the dog is playing with. I had some friends who renovated an old house and their dog loved to play fetch with an old tennis ball. The dog got very sick from lead poisoning and almost died.

    We have a 120y old cottage in Denmark with thatched roof. Went through the same thing as you. Tarp the entire roof in with several layers and secure the tarp with chicken fencing and batons. Then you will have some peace of mind to focus on the rest

    I know you are probably sick and tired of hearing this, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get tarps or something to cover that roof. Dehumidifiers and heaters are going to do nothing with water still pouring in. Love the house and will follow the project with great interest, as I lived in the Cotswolds for a while and still have friends there. Wishing you all the very best. Now queuing up the next episode ❤

    Someone suggested servicing the Aga for heating; what a great idea! You can sleep and relax in the kitchen then, and the house will start drying a bit. The roof needs covered right over the ridge, you know, and then down to the eaves.

    Absolutely yes you keep the apartment as a potential rental. You’re going to need it for the 3-4x what you think/hope/plan to pay for restoring the house. As an old lady who has lived through and participated in the remodeling of several homes and the building from scratch of a new complete house-it will take longer and cost way more than you dreamed. But you are young, and you will look back on this time has one of the most rewarding and satisfying parts of your lives, and also one of the hardest. But you will make it through and be so proud of what you accomplished. Just be sure to take time to appreciate each other for whatever you are each able to bring to the endeavor. It all matters, and appreciation and patience with your selves and your partners is vital. You love each other, be sure to say so every damn day! This is going to be hard. You can do it.

One day you will look back at this record with amazement but, until then, try and enjoy the journey. Celebrate every little success, and look at problems as opportunities. I, for one, will be watching you every step of the way.

    Amber's face at 21:38 was probably a mirror of mine when the electrician asked me why I wasn't crying at the state of the electrics. You have to smile and not be defeated. Get a cat to keep the mice down, preferably a farm one. Muddy will get a new boss.

  • @scottjohnson371

    PLEASE READ THIS POST! There is no way to proceed with your project before you create water proof scaffolding super structure over the entire house. Expensive yes, but once the thatch roof is completely removed, you will find extensive wood rot in the timbers. With a shed structure over the house, you can expose ALL of the issues without tarping every day. Even with tarping, you won’t be able to prevent extensive water incursion and even more damage.
    SO exciting though! Cheering you on from the States!

    I renovated an 100 year stone old house with my partner (old by American standards) starting four years ago. Your videos take me right back to the days where the only room finished (even partially) was my home office, trying to paint a wall or install a light in between meetings during the day... Stick with it! All the little jobs add up and even if it takes a few years you'll get there. I hesitate to say you'll never really be "done" because old house are never are, but it'll be livable before you know it!

He needs to run just about all day, everyday, doesn't he? But what a cutie! The flat is looking really good, and life will become (in a way) more simple once you're in and your old house is sold. Well done!! Someday you two will look around and (mostly) forget all the hard and nasty work, and feel immensely satisfied that you are living in a dry, healthy, comfortable cottage, the prettiest cottage in the Cotswolds. Chiming in like everyone else, cover the whole thing with tarps. Our porch roof was/is leaking from the top & it's causing problems everywhere because water never just goes in a straight line. Even a small leak can take weeks to dry out after the water has stopped.

    A dog can be taught hand gestures and some sign language. I had a deaf neighbor that loved my dog and with persistence, she was able to teach him to respond to her gestures and sign language. Little did she know that witching a couple of years later, my dog started going deaf and the signing became very useful. He was completely deaf the last 2.5 years of his life and he lived a very happy and well behaved(due to the gestures and signing) life. Towards the end of his life his eyesight to was going, so I adapted vibration and touch to his learning. So with that said, your pup has no excuse to behave. 😂

    OK, as an American, I am impressed by anyone having a two hundred year old home here... and we lavish our love on the OLD Spanish Missions here in Texas, that date "ALL the way back to the late 1600's" The only time I was really excited to know that I was 50% Scots DNA, was when I was able to set eyes on the place that my ancestors lived in, in Kilburnie, Scotland. Its a total wreck, but its an OLD wreck, and as such, my American heart was just mad for it! Congrats on your cottage, and in some ways, I am painfully jealous, and in other ways, as I sit in my warm, modern home in the middle of nowhere, Texas, allow me to feel a little bit of smug enjoyment...

    They don't sell extraordinary size tarps in England? It's an emergency for you to cover your roof before your whole house is destroyed.

    I am so happy you have a new video; I have a snow day today, which is rare in Virginia, so instead of having to go teach I get to work on some home projects for my own renovation and watch your video! I am so happy for you guys; I feel real joy watching your excitement and happiness with your new home and future in it. One day soon you will be able to sit in front of your fireplace with a hot cup of tea between your projects. I love watching Muddy play in his new environment - I can tell he is so happy! I can't wait for the next video. I almost wish I had seen your channel a year from now so that I can binge watch. I am too impatient for them. Thank you for recording and sharing!

    Definition of a springer spaniel:- Four springs for feet and one in the tail all going in different directions. We named ours Tangles he had a party trick of tying himself around the washing line post while on lead, hence Tangles.
    Looking forward to what this year holds and the adventures you have ❤

    If there have been any patches using concrete you need to get those out and replaced with lime. Concrete causes the issues you have inside.

    Cover the roof!! You know it leaks so that should be job number 1 until someone can fix it. Tarps will work, just do something because while water is still coming in, your dehumidifiers are not as effective as they could be and the damp is getting worse.

    Best of luck!! We bought our first home a year ago and when we got the keys it had all flooded, so I completely understand how you feel with wet walls and dryers everywhere! Keep going and make sure to always be kind to each other (no matter how fed up you both get!) It will all be worth it in the end. We finally moved in (with heating and electric, yay!) a month ago and it was the best feeling :)

    Hello from Canada!
    You might try asking nurseries for their old plastic roofs (they need to change them quite regularly) and big commercial ones have to pay to get rid of them. It may be free for you!!😊

    That's the derpiest dog I've ever seen! He's adorable. On the days that you get down and disheartened, remember that it will get done. One way or another you'll get it done. You have the annex, somewhere clean, dry and warm.....cpuld be so much worse, you could have to live in the cottage.
    I'm so looking forward to seeing this journey through with you....and seeing more of that derpy boy.
    One thing that would make my viewing experience easier.....get that dog some rubber sticks. (ex vet nurse here and I've seen way too many horrible injuries and illnesses because of sticks) the last thing you need is a dog with stick splinters down his throat. 😬😬
    Keep up that amazing work. You clearly have the right attitude.... Laugh through it all. 😊
