Great video - thanks. I like your comment at 1 min. about it being a great Saturday afternoon project. This is my third winter and probably 50 hours into trying to get mine apart. One of the 4 bolts holding the control housing on would not come off. A couple weeks ago, I ground the head off and then sheered the bolt further down using vice grips to try and remove it. At least now I have access to finish the remainder of the "afternoon" project :).
+Dave Maher Glad it could be of some help to you. Yeah understand, just knowing what to expect can make a job seem less daunting. Good luck with your project
To protect items from falling into the pedestal, I place a rag over the inside of the pedestal when removing and assembling the parts. I also mark the outside of the engine control housing to the pedestal to help with alignment of the bolts.
This is such a good video. I'm almost prepared to take it on myself this Spring. One worry is the mention of specific lubricants and 'if in doubt' consult the manufacturer. My manufacturer (GibSea) went bust years ago. How much damage if I just use an ordinary lubricant?
Thank you for an informative video! I have found the steering on our S&S 30 to be quite stiff, even after lubrication. The steering is uniformly stiff from lock to lock and the boat is very tiring to helm and of course there is no "feel". I suspect that whoever has serviced it has tensioned the chain or the cables too much. What do you think?
How else can you disconnect them? hahah I plan to cut mines as well and install easy disconnect connectors so that way next time they don't need to be cut :)

Great video, much neglected maintenance items.

Is this the american way to disconnect cables? Cut them? I can't believe that this will be a propper way of good craftsmenship.

Don’t use a magnetic screwdriver to work on a compass
Wd40 is not a lubricant😎
