    ★★★ Description ★★★
The Picture of Dorian Gray is about a man who is influenced into leading a life dedicated to pleasure and follows the repercussions of that decision. Dorian befriends two people, Basil and Henry. Basil, an artist, creates a beautiful portrait of Dorian. Dorian wishes that the painting, and not he, would take the toll of time and sin. His wish is granted and he remains youthful. However, the painting becomes disfigured as time passes and Dorian commits sin. After having destroyed many of his friends and lovers lives, Dorian stabs the painting in frustration. This causes time and sin to catch up with the real Dorian, while the painting reverts to its original beauty.

Dorian, Basil, and Harry are three personas of Oscar Wilde, according to the author himself. Dorian was the ideal he wished to become. Basil was the person he considered himself to be. Harry was how the world saw him.

    • @SakuraFruitTube
      @SakuraFruitTube 10 месяцев назад +16

Ooooo I thought of it like, Basil is the angel and Harry is the devil. They both give Dorian advice and Dorian kills the angel first because he made him feel ashamed of himself. Or another setup could be like, Basil is the super ego, Harry the id, and Dorian the ego. These terms are from Sigmund Freud.

@@SakuraFruitTubeyeah, I too saw Basil as the nagging angel on Dorian’s shoulder and Henry as the tempting devil on Dorian’s other shoulder.
Outside of that, I’m pretty sure Basil represents the Victorian Era’s idealism at the time that was constantly oppressing Wilde (specifically, the society’s rejection of Homosexuality)

The same philosophy will lead one to death...spiritual death. As portrayed by Oscar Wilde himself with Dorian's ending. Lord Henry is a fool...a fool that appears to be wise, of whose consequence Dorian had to go through himself.

To be honest as I read the book I looked at it as Good conscious (basil) bad conscious (Henry) they both impacted dorians life greatly Dorian says it before killing basil & he tells Henry towards the end of the book to not ever give someone else the book he recommended to Dorian because it was “evil” so they both played a huge factor in Dorians life but he loved himself to much and pursued Henry’s belief in hedonism & would’ve most likely continued if it wasn’t for his sins catching up to him.
I don’t think he repented because even when he was trying to be “good” with that girl towards the end it later reveals to himself that he did it out of “curiosity” “vanity” & “hypocrisy” so their was no changing in that man which gives life to the “you live by the sword you die by the sword” he killed basil with a knife and died by the knife this book was just a masterpiece beginning to end definitely going to re-read eventually

Now that you mentioned about Lord Henry and Basil Hallward, I’m now wondering if these two men are demons, warlocks, masters of the dark arts or collectors of souls disguised as humans or if Dorian inadvertently conjures up a spell by wishing himself to be young forever instead of the portrait itself without even realizing it. Or if DORiAN unknowingly and somehow opened up a portal to hell the domain of Satan or something and unwittingly wished to be young forever instead of the portrait. Or unwittingly makes a deal with the devil in exchange for eternal youth at the cost of his own soul. 🤔

    Good review.
Great story. Imagine being immortal. Wow! To still be around after hundreds of years. One thing is true, you would know what really happened in the past. Let's face it you would have witnessed something first hand. And today you would read the modern history books and maybe, just maybe...Lol!
All history is just what it means. His. Story. History was predominantly written by men. Left brain and in a draconian way. History to me, whomever wrote it, is theory, opinion and conjecture. How one perceives history is down to the individual. One does not know what happened if one was not there to witness it. Yes it can be read in a book but, who wrote it? There are conflicting views of history in all books. Different cultures have differing stories of how events happened. Who knows which is telling the truth? Normally the victors would write whatever they wanted, who could argue? It is only his story after all. That is all well and good but, when it is taught in schools and becomes the mainstream then any other debate that says other wise is ridiculed, attacked and (excommunicated) pushed to one side as pseudoscience. It goes against the grain. Information has to stay linear in a civilized society. It has to be taught in schools and universities so the pupils can graduate, owe the state bucket loads of money, and become good civil servants and carry on with the flow of information they have learned, and repeat it over and over. And teach it to the next generation, and the next. All going the right way. The official way. That is what information is. IN. FORMATION. Linear. Ordered. Left brain. Masculine.
My story is a mystery, unless I tell somebody else, then it becomes His Story. It is still just a story after all.
I always wondered if the word Heresy derives from Her Say, like a woman's view point. It makes sense considering women were persecuted and not allowed to speak back then. The church was a male dominance over the female. How times have changed. Women were not allowed to do anything. They were basically property. There is a reason why the male orientated church suppressed the female, because they are aware that women are the creative of the two genders. The sacred feminine. This is why our history and the world is so riddled with war and violence. Having said that, it is more a spiritual trait. Take Oscar Wilde. He had the more feminine spirit inside of him and he was persecuted for being gay. He was a man but he had the creative essence of the female.🐯👍
Oscar Wilde, he was a gentle man, a creative mind
A genius, a story teller, great prose, he left behind
Persecuted, hounded, sentenced, for being gay
A masterpiece, The Picture Of Dorian Gray
How times have moved on! One might say
How ironic, how this brilliant mind, is revered and celebrated today. 👍🐯by Leo

I heard that some people compare Dorian Grey with a Vampire, I think it more like curse or wish what you wish for. The sins he does on people show on the paint a mirror to his soul and real age.

Lord Henry should have contemplated on the words spoken by that "vulgar" preacher more. "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" - Mark 8:36

I know. That whole movement was silly. They never did what they claimed to do. Write for pure amusement. Oscar Wilde wrote some silly satirical plays with a LOT of political commentary and then felt embarassed by the lack of depth and wrote a book with a catholic religious and psychological themes. He was never a superficial entertainer even though he claimed to be.
