Really interesting doc. It must have been so easy to move to another country many years ago. It’s now practically impossible unless you have mega money.

A lot of people are really struggling in Ireland right now .
Do not believe what you see in the media .

Now it's Australia that are needing a work force.
They are still trying to populate Australia.

I emigrated in 1989 to Canada. I've never forgotten why. My children have always thanked for the move. It wasn't easy here to assimilate, but, it was done. I have a keen interest in aircraft, so I used to frequent Dublin airport often. It used to tear my heart out to watch grown men cry like babies, as they watched their children fly off on an Aer Lingus 747, to Boston or New York. But, I left too!!! It demonstrates the condition of the Irish economy in those days. I was unemployable at aged 28!!! It was cheaper for an employer to hire someone in their teens. With a mortgage, what choice did one have? Politicians?!! An Irish joke!!!

I got on that 747 in Shannon myself in 89. Had a Guinness at that gate before getting on the plane and landed with a holiday visa and my last 1200 quid. I lucked out with the visa a year later. I used to watch british airways leave San Francisco Airport often in the evening and I couldn't take a trip home because I didn't want to go back to surviving on under the table money and the dole because there was no work for an electrician. I visit by myself these days because my American wife and kids have little interest in hanging out in Cork for a week or 2. I feel we are the forgotten ones that left because it's like driving around in a foreign country now when I go back to visit. Here is a song I wrote about how it felt when I was in CA by myself for the first year but the Americans absolutely loved me from day 1.

I feel fortunate at the end of the day. Cheers.

In recent years the economy in Ireland has been nowhere near so desperate. I hope the illegal immigrants from Ireland found a way to stay legally. America used to be welcoming to Irish immigrants...do not know if it has changed since 87. But like I said the Irish economy can take care of it's own in more recent years.
