  • Deep in the wild forests of Cameroon, hunters are poaching large family groups of gorillas and chimpanzees and selling them illegally either for their meat or as exotic pets. These populations might have already been ravaged to extinction were it not for the tireless efforts of big-hearted conservationists working with government and local communities to protect them. For over 15 years, as director of Ape Action Africa, Rachel Hogan and her team have been providing a safe haven and recovery facility in Mefou National Park. The facility that has grown to house and feed over 300 primates affected by the gruesome illegal bushmeat trade.

Humans need to stop messing with nature.
We deem ourselves to be the wise ones, I can't fathom why as humans we can't see the future impact of our greedy actions.
I am so glad that we have people working towards protecting these beautiful beings. Thank you.

Juhi Manral what a stupid comment. the poachers and almost certainly poor Cameroonians who have no other means to make money. They probably have family to feed themselves with no means to make money.

Darren Russell V And are the animals or nature responsible for that?
It is the government's apathy and the corporate greed which has led to such dismal conditions.

This shit pisses me off. They can't raise chickens or what? This is sickening to me. It's basically cannibalism. They are our closest relatives in the world and you eat them? I would not be surprised if the people of Cameroon ate humans too.

The only people who eat gorillas are people who are literally starving. No, in my mind that doesn't make it ok. The only answer is to help those people learn how to grown their own food and for the gov't to provide food assistance to people like they do in most civilized countries.

I thought this particular gorillas name is Shufai? I've watched Discovery Channel's documentary called "Going Ape" almost 20 times.. It first aired in 2007 and ran for two seasons. It absolutely breaks my heart that these things are taking place, and our primate population is close to extinction as a result poachers. It makes me ashamed to be a human. What can I do to help? How do I get involved?
