I've read about this once. According to Forty Million Dollar Slaves, written by William C. Rhoden, one reason black jockeys were allowed to dominate the sport in it's early days was because wins were credited to the horse instead of the jockey. However, gamblers figured out that betting on the jockey was much more reliable and profitable than betting on the horse. With the detestable revelation that the skill of the rider was more important than the animal itself, they started weeding out black jockeys to preserve narrative of white supremacy. My country tis of thee...
The black person I'm most aware of in relation to horseracing is Eddie Sweat, who was Secretariat's groom. And, I believe, the only person who truly loved, and treated, Big Red as he deserved. RIP, Eddie and Red.
Roy Wood Jr. is crazy and I love it!!!!! 🤣😂🤣🥰🤗 I'm surprised Uncle BeBo wasn't mentioned since he had to have been one of the most famous Jockeys in history! 🤔😁
There needs to be an episode on that. There is a history of black americans and africans that migrated to "raceless Soviet Union" in early 1930s. Even Langston Hughes and Paul Robeson moved there. Definitely worth looking into.
I missed these segments. :-) I had no idea there were so many black jockeys back then. I was never a jockey, but I did ride horses in college. It is definitely a white person's sport. As the only black person in the region (15 schools), some of those women definitely made me feel like less than. :-( I really loved rising and my coach, but it wasn't the best atmosphere for POCs.
Rich horse people can be extremely snooty. As a kid, I walked into a trailer of some step cousins (one of them invited me) and all the women who rode looked at me in disgust like 'who let in the poor kid . . gross". I never went back. I've always loved horses though. My mom used to ride horses and worked in a stable when she was young. Riding was one of the perks. Nowadays, they don't let people do that. It's very classist, and also racist (I saw no people of color).
His mustache creeped me out the entire interview! Because, I am terrified of Centipedes! His mustache is super shiny and at different angles it’s like it’s like a centipede crawling across his upper lip! However, I made it thru the entire skit and learned so much about my people.
They so desperate to end our ✨Black Excellence✨ It’s exhausting trying to use sports, art, finances to advance our success only to be shut down for over decades because of RACISM. * sigh * and it will never end, only transform.
Got to do Black bicycle pros! Major Taylor set amazing records for any color athlete. He could probably even open a bottle without putting himself in the hospital!
1:25 “if you gotta black jockey…” and the part I didn’t remember word for word… (you gotta have a white sounding name for that horse). Roy is hilarious
Great tale Roy!! (I actually rode/broke some horses that were out of Seabiscut....WOW) How about a story on Marshall "Major" Taylor? America's 1st world champion in cycling.
In Jamaica it is Caymanas Park. The African slaves were brought from Africa principally and almoste entirely to the US. In fact, if you were to conduct a poll asking if slaves when to any other place than the US, it is most likely that the makority of respondents would say "yes" Although it might then be a mystery as to how so many black people got to the Caribbean and South America. Blacks make up half of the population
Nope. And in the immortal words of George Duke... "..and I'll knock little jockeys off the rich peoples lawns, and before they get up, I'll be gone..."
17 year olds... LOL I can count on the fingers of one hand all the ones I've met who weren't subject to stupendous fits of silliness. Wait. The fingers of no hands. Of course, neither Roy nor myself, naturally, were ever idiots at that age.
1:20 you sais "rode to victory on *HIS* horse" and pocketed the prize money ? I would think that even if a black jockey rides the horse (and wins) the horse's owner who got the prize money surely was white...
I read that black people moved to Russia quite a bit in the 1920s and 1930s because it was far less racist there than in the US. Clearly things have changed in Russia since then. Now, black people would probably better off moving to Germany. Better access to publicly available healthcare.
"They" continue to treat POC poorly. If "they" had no eyes to see different skin tones, would that still be an issue? Be kind to all people. Be better than before.
Roy Wood Jr is one of my most favorite comedians! This was so funny, and so informative!
That black jockey in 2000 is my cousin, his name is Marlon St Julien. First black jockey in the derby since 1921
That's amazing!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏

" Bittersweet DISHARMONY...."
Wow. Great added info! 👍🏾
learn something new everyday, thanks.
"Stay strong my horse brothers". 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
But the whole sketch is so funny with that serious delivery.
This needs to be a full show already, something historical would be cool
Yes!!
Then they will run out content real fast
Don't ruin it
I would love to see Roy Wood Jr on The Amber Ruffin Show doing *"How Did We Get Here?"* That is the dream crossover for me!

When are you going to bring Roy's show back? I miss it!
So true !
Hilarious, informative, and self deprecating! Trifecta!
I would watch a whole history series CPTime by Roy Wood Jr.!
Hey Trevor, I just wanted to say you’re surrounded by the best team. 🙌🏾☺️
Roy should have his own show again!! And CP time should be its own show
ROY WOOD JR!!!!! (His name can only be written in all caps. This man is a LEGEND)
This was so sad and so informative at the same time. Thanks for putting this out into the world. Who knew?
Gotta love edutainment like this. I've always wondered what the story was behind the racist lawn jockey statuettes.
I guess I'm the only one that laughed extremely loud at him icking up the cup saying "come on Jennifer Lewis" lol.
"4 the Culture."✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
Very timely with Jordan Peele's "Nope" set to come out soon.
There needs to be an episode on that. There is a history of black americans and africans that migrated to "raceless Soviet Union" in early 1930s. Even Langston Hughes and Paul Robeson moved there. Definitely worth looking into.
Heck yeah, love CP Time! Always such a hilarious ride; Roy is so iconic 😆

Entertaining and informative. Nice. Had no idea
Loved this bit! Hilarious and informative, spot on 🔥
I think Roy is the perfect replacement of James Corden
Voting yes to this.
I mean, Roy does have the advantage of actually being funny.
Oh no you didnt! You did! Roy is fun!

Winney!! 😂😂 you're a very funny comedian, why haven't I seen you before. Keep them coming!! ❤ 😂😂
This is hilarious bro I’m dead “seen here probably thinking about racism” I didn’t expect that… “gotta get in early before they learn to do racism 😂

Outstanding and hilarious. Keep it going
Sometimes life doesn't give you what you want, not because you don"t deserve it but because you deserve much more. I’m telling you keep grinding!🤞🏽❤️🔥
'"seen here thinking about racism probably" killed me hahahahahahhah
1:25 “if you gotta black jockey…” and the part I didn’t remember word for word… (you gotta have a white sounding name for that horse). Roy is hilarious
If you got a black jockey, you’ve got to at least give the horse an extra white name to balance things out.
Aristides is a Greek name. So, yeah, White. The most famous one was an Athenian general who fought at Marathon and Plataea.
I never miss these ☺
Thanks for sharing this info
Why does the world hate us so much!? I know we must to great.
They H8 us, Cuz they Ain’t Us✨
@CrazyNendo you wish lol 😂 keep dreaming
Roy is officially my choice to take over the late late show when JC leaves next year.
Probably gonna be Klepper though
If he gets the nod then he needs to bring Dulce with him as co hosts.
Don't we need a token Brit?
The same thing can be said about Cowboys. Original were blacks
🤣😂🤣
@Rick Ton: also the term "Buckaroo" came about because white cowboys had a hard time pronouncing "Vaquero"
Make rock'n'roll black again!
Its also been a thing because Gambia has been know for its horse riding skills for thousands of years..

That’s a beautiful horse. That’s a horse horse.
We're horse people in Lexington kentucky and my husband has been working for Gainsway for 15yrs... and Hispanic
Can we talk about how shinny RWJr's mustache is?
Cool history.
CP TIME ON MOTHERS DAY ...WOOD B GREAT. LOL😆😆😆😆
with the prize money he won, he could finally achieve the dream of every Black man in 1875 Kentucky -- moving out of Kentucky.
My uncle was a well known jokey in Maryland. James Thornton.

More African slaves went to Brazil than to the US. Black people are nearly half of Brazil's population.

Have you done anything on black teachers? That'll be an interesting topic
🤔 All I kno abt hourse race is fwom sbr . . . 😳
Aristidis was a famous ancient Greek philosopher....but somehow I feel you already knew that and are just being "cute"
CP time is a very unfortunate acronym. Anyone remember when a lot of Pokémon go videos got taken down cuz they had cp in the title?
