II's ability to choke cymbals mid-groove/fill has always been impressive. He does it a few times in his Drumeo Offering, so if that's your vibe, definitely check out that full video.
I agree!! Please react to his Drumeo video next! He won Drumeo's 2023 drummer of the year, metal drummer of the year, and Drum recording of the year :).
I am absolutely obsessed with watching him play. The way he uses the entire kit and adds just enough fills/offbeats to make it interesting. Gives me goosebumps every time! His drum parts are some of the grooviest, more intricate and polished drumming I've heard!!!
1:02 It's called a 'cymbal choke'. Most drummers will use the free hand to choke a cymbal (a popular visual example is in the first Ace Ventura movie: Cannibal Corpse's drummer does a series of cymbal chokes to start off their song 'Hammer Smashed Face'). They're not all that uncommon, but choking the cymbal with the same hand he's hitting it with (especially while mid-groove) takes a good bit of practice for most drummers to get the muscle memory right...
I love that you appreciate all the things he does that so many people dont even know are happening. Check out the Drumeo of the solo he does live for The Summoning. So amazing
So I am not a drummer at all, but the way that he plays, it looks graceful. It sounds so dumb but for the amount of sounds and hits he makes, he has such an exacting economy of movement. My meaning is that no movement he makes is without purpose or is not wasted. There's no flashiness or unneeded flourish. It's like he's dancing on the drums... I dont know. it's amazing regardless.
I’m not a drummer either but I love ii’s drumming even though I can only wrap my brain around his elegance, precision & technique by comparing it to watching a classically trained principal ballerina… every movement has purpose & beauty, it’s mind blowing 🖤
YAAAASSSS To II reminding you of Danny Carey from Tool. I definitely get that vibe as well, and apart from DC, II is the only other drummer I have had an immediate interest in watching play. The way he makes it look so effortless just blows my mind 🤯
What is so impressive is that there are no 'wasted' moments. Everything he does is very deliberate, it's impressive.

I was going to say that too. Check out ii's Drumeo interview. It's fascinating.
It’s disgusting how easy he makes it look. So goddamn flawless.

When he plays it looks like he’s just going for a stroll in the park!
He makes it so fun. He’s obviously having a good time.

Love this explanation and also totally agree. ❤
I love how he always looks like he's conducting an orchestra. Graceful is definitely the word for his style.
