At first I was confused about the "nobody will know you're missing" thing when there's clearly newspapers of people missing. Then it hit me-- there's only one doppelganger. The "missing person" is is whoever the doppelganger _stops_ mimicking, not the person that was actually just captured. By the time a person "goes missing" the trail is already cold and there will be no clues (because the doppelganger has plenty of time to hide evidence of its last host).
Yeah, I was confused about the missing posters part until I read your comment. One thing I don't get why it keeps doing it. I figured the first time was to escape the place it was - trading another person to be stuck there in turn. But why bring more in? Maybe it's explained in the game and I missed it. It could be just doing it for shits and giggles though.
edit: oh wait, maybe there are more of them trying to escape...? No, that might not make sense. I have no idea if there's a plot hole or if there is something in the story I'm missing.
From what I remember about Doppelgänger they are suppose to be spirits who take the form of people who weren’t born with twins and they tend to try to take the place of the person whose identity they copied. Unlike the game everyone has at least one but can have as many as two. My friend says he’s seen me in another city on multiple occasions and shown me pictures as proof except the pictures weren’t even look a likes just coincidences because of how his brain works....or doesn’t.
@@chilomine839 I once was on a school trip with all of my classmates and we were on the bus on our way back to shool, we were pretty close and half of the class, including the teacher, saw a kid that looked just like one of my classmates. My teacher even panicked for a second and thought my classmate had escaped somehow and was just walking through town, but then realized he was actually on the bus. I usually hear of doppelgangers being in other countries, or cities st least, but seeing one in the same city, at the same time, was kinda freaky

This is the only video game protagonist in HISTORY to ever have the common sense to pull out wooden boards from a door frame with her HANDS. No crowbar, no axe, nothing!
I like that Spring Rabbit reuses the house interior. It gives every entry that feeling of a super low budget production company that only had a few places to actually film.
I imagine they actually did that intentionally. Not only to reuse content, but also to establish the worlds are the same. If that place is truly a holding place for those unwanted monsters, it's entirely possible that the House found itself there somehow.
80% sure that is the same "House". The familiar flashlight on that one skellt and the skeleton on the ceiling, are possible clues.

Actually, now that I think about it more, why is the skeleton down there wearing the flashlight? Two people died in the basement, the roof girl and the other guy. And there are exactly two skeletons there. But the protag, the one who actually escaped, was the one wearing the same flashlight as the skeleton. So, did everyone die and the guy’s skeleton is somewhere else, or is this implying that in canon, the guy was actually the one who escaped instead of the protag?

Two things I want to mention:
1.) I think that the house at the end is the exact same house that was in "The House" (one of two games in the endcard, not sure if same developer but most likely) and that the skeletons that were there are actually the skeletons of the protagonists of that game.
2.) Why did Manly's dad own books about overthrowing governments?

I think a game where you’re the doppelgänger without knowing it might be fun. Maybe they’d forget they took someone’s place and have to navigate their new life w/o knowing anything that’s going on, not knowing their parents and friends and having to navigate that situation w/o being found out. Maybe they have, like, an instinctual fear of being found out and that everyone around them is secretly hostile or something :o
Now I want a game out of that 'cause that's one interesting idea! (At least, to me-)

Who doesn’t have books about overthrowing governments in their collections? Or in depth studies on where socks that disappear in the dry goes.
I agree in that it was unique and interesting, but I don't quite grasp the connection was between the scientist's experiment and the other dimension, whether he caused the bridge between them or just discovered it. Nor did I catch an explanation as to why storms were important. For what it is though still fun to watch so would like to see more from them.
Maybe the scientist found a bridge to the other dimension but it disappeared before he could fully understand it, and he built those machines as a way of maintaining a bridge between the worlds. As for the storms, maybe the machines weren't too damaged and the storms coincidentally threw lightning that reactivated them. Of course, I haven't the slightest clue, but this makes sense to me.
Yeah I always feel dissatisfied with such stupid 80s games. So far the "easter killer" feels like the only complete game lol.
@@eafesaf6934 it can be dissatisfying without being stupid, this is still the dev practicing their skill. They need constructive feedback to develop their craft just like anyone else. I know the food I cooked 3 years ago is trash compared to the food I cooked yesterday and I know 3 years from now it should be better than today. That doesn't make my strawberry custard stupid, it just means I need to make it better next time. Btw it's still delicious, even though it was made with whole egg product instead of yolks.

There was a lot of reused assets from that other 80's-ish horror game about an evil house killing college kids to absorb them, and ended with it chasing the protagonist down the road. Her home's layout was exactly the same, the "ruined" house's exterior was the monster house (which is why it looks like an evil face). It felt like this was a prequel or something, or at least a reference to a previous game with a dig of "discarded failures" went.
That house is the same one in a previous game titled, The house. It seems like the devs are trying to connect between their games.

Yeah, human beings need to normalize being a part of nature and helping it grow. With us taking over the whole planet, we don't have the luxury of having everything sterile. If everyone grew out their lawns and let flowering "weeds" go, we wouldn't have to worry about the food chain so much and ESPECIALLY the pollinators that allow us to have most all of our food and the food we feed our other food.

When we entered that last area with that run down looking house, I was thinking "oh, is that THE house?" Then entering it was just like, "OH! IT IS THE HOUSE!" The poor chap who died in the ceiling was there and everything. The layout was the same, and it turned into the face monster too. That's crazy.
I'd never heard the term "tank controls" before so that sent me down an interesting rabbit hole.

Anyway, fun little game. It was funny how when the protag went down the stairs in the house it looked like she was falling down.
Yeah, tanks were/are prevalent in going forward the way the body is facing independent of the camera/barrel. So anything mimicking that usually gets called tank controls. So far, people haven't found a better way to describe that control scheme. It just fits as there's not much else synonymous to it.

I liked the psychological aspect of this one! The soundtrack was really effective in conveying the ominous mood. Nice buildup to the end too. Gonna have to check out their other stuff!

@@niagambino1714 it was published in 1991 but only in Japan. I am pretty sure that the english ring books were published in the US after the success of the movies, like the ones from vertical Inc were from 2004.
Also by 1991, typewriters were no longer a common item in households. So even if the friend of the main character of this game has heard of the ring based on the Japanese novel before it was being translated in English, the use of typewriters suggest that the setting of the game takes place in the 60's or 70's
@@hitoriroku I'll give it to you that the English publication wasn't until much later, but typewriters were still used up until the late 90s. We even still used one in our house until computers became more affordable. The game still fits the 80s 90s theme

I hope indie devs realized. retro style games weren't bad looking intentionally. they were limited by the technology at the time. Like go look up any ps1 game then cross reference. You'll notice the ps1 game is full of detail and life while these "retro" inspired games are just whatever low poly asset we can get and slap a vhs filter on it
it took forever for people to start learning (and many still haven't) that pixel art was never about having giant chunky blocks but about blending limited colors and having far more detail than should even be possible at lower resolutions by using color tricks, so I wouldn't hold too much hope. What drives me nuts about these "ps1" style games personally is that many still have high poly items and the poly budget of a ps3 game and mostly just rely on post-process shaders to stretch and smear low res textures, so you end up with a weird blend of things that look pseudo-ps1 in some ways than a tree/pot/etc in the scene with more polys than the entire ps1 could even draw at once.

Stylising is a thing, not everyone wants the highest detail available. However, i do wish these type of games were not advertised as "PS1" games when they make no attempt to be compatible with a playstation or even use the technical limits to emulate how a PS1 game would actually look. The "playstation horror demo disc" series is a neat concept and is enjoyable to play but it fails to actually hold true to the "playstation" part. I am not saying that they should follow the technical limitations, but they should not be described as such if they do not.

Seriously, I was a bit confused by the story. A scientist"s work resulted in "several openings emerging in the city" which were tied to rainstorms and wind. That explained the doppleganger appearing but not the thing that was walking towards her at the end - was it supposed to be the perapatetic house like the first game? Wasn't the doppleganger who murdered their family in the beginning caught? So it can't be the same one shapeshifting?
A little more attention to the science details would have elevated this. But it had a great creepy atmosphere and style. Except for her hair lol.
‘My dad had books on guerrilla warfare and over throwing a government’ that’s my kind of dad. It’s the stuff I’m going to get and hopefully my kids find it. Like bushcraft books or edible plant guides I have and use, it’s better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Especially that former book he mentioned.

I love the game and the atmosphere - and Spring Rabbit's other works too - but the cover art with AI generative work is such a bummer - especially to see it as the thumbnail! i hope fewer indie devs go down this path, especially since they're creatives too!

Its not dreamcast, a console, youre thinking of, its resident evil and silent hill. Silent hill had it where you could move the camera yourself, even on ps1. Resident evil was fixed camera.
