    4:40 is a depiction of a whalefall! when whales die, they sink to the ocean floor where all sorts of critters will feast on its carcass. giant isopods are one of them! so it's not some strange creature, just a bunch of little pals having a feast.

      Seems like it, gotta add that for it to be a whalefall the carcass has to hit a depth of at least 1000 meters (3300 feet) as that's the upper limit of the bathyal zone.
      When a whale carcass drops to depths of at least1000 meters, the carcass lasts for a long time as theres only a fraction of the scavengers that would be on the upper zones, so the carcass basically becomes its own ecosystem for those deep sea animals for years.

    The video at 4:39 is a dead whale. If they land deep enough in the ocean, it creates something called a "whale fall" that basically creates its own ecosystem for years, even when there's nothing but bones. It's about as vibrant as the ecosystem you'll find around deep sea vents.

    The second game it's based off a Lovecraft's story call "The Temple." the first one i read from him.
    It's about a submarine crew that gets trapped when their submarine gets damage and can't resurface and one by one the crew members start hallucinating and start leaving the submarine. At the end the Captain, i think, is left alone on the submarine now without electricity and he start getting this visions and dreams about a temple deepsea glowing green (like the one in game) and that "something" was calling him (probably something similar happened to the other crew members) at the end of the story he manage to see the temple, through a window or the submarine telescope and decides to get out of the submarine and swim to the temple trying to meet what was calling him.
    Anyways the point is: The Temple a H.P Lovecraft's story inspire the second game because: damage submarine and a glowing green temple on which a eldritch deity rest. Merry Christmas y'all.

    I gotta say, that second game, when we were going down that hole/ tunnel it really gave me a massive feeling of claustrophobia, and "oh no no no no no". I think having the tunnel be so tight that the vessel bumped into it repeatedly and unavoidably, but still having it in the player's hands rather than reducing it to a cutscene gives a real sense of fear and is just really unnerving in a way that's so different from so much of horror games. A real masterful touch, I think.
    I also kinda think also having the huge open ocean beforehand and having the player go up to the surface and all around and so far across the map also really heightened the sense of claustrophobia that they created by giving it something to contrast to. I really don't think this game would have worked half as well had they either started in the tunnel or had it as a cutscene.

    • @bewilderbeestie
      @bewilderbeestie 3 месяца назад

      Plus, the submarine doesn't tip up and down, so by having the tunnels be mostly vertical the player can't see where they're going, increasing the effect --- very nicely done.

    Watching this as someone with severe thalassophobia but a deep interest in marine biology, I'm... underwhelmed. It has so much potential, but I feel like a lot of ocean-fear horror games miss the mark a bit. These aren't exceptions.
    Orcas throw sharks around for fun, a lot of the mapped ocean is empty space (that 5% is bs), and overall, neither of these quite tackle everything that makes the ocean scary to me at least.
    What makes the ocean scary is that the ocean shows no mercy. Whether by it's depths or what lies within, whether we know what/why/how it is or not, it doesn't matter how much value anything or anyone lost held-- a submarine at the bottom of the ocean remains.
    One big wave can take 100 people with it. Many people lost at sea never to return. Submarines bursting as they sink too deep. The panic when you can't bring yourself above the surface, or the pressure on your body. It's hopeless. At least on land, you can take a last big breath of air, mercy that water cannot grant.
    I do see great potential in these developers, however I do feel like there could've been more. :') idk but yeah

    • @damien678
      @damien678 2 года назад

      I've never really examined why I feel a great sense of dread with the ocean, and ocean related things... But I'm an aussie and have nearly drowned in it. Our wildlife isn't even as scary as a lot of ppl make it out to be (the animals with the highest kill count on humans is horses and cows here)
      but all that.. yeah you describe it really well. no mercy or escape when you get in too deep and the pressure and just... how we're quite literally out of our element. We weren't made for the ocean. We're so out of place that small things going wrong can be disastrous

    • @damien678
      @damien678 2 года назад

      also lol, yeah, getting facts straight about animals helps. and the more you learn typically the more terrible and frightening you start to see nature. it's still beautiful, but in a very brutal way. I almost want to compare it to the beauty of some murder scenes in Hannibal (tv show).
      like... there's a lot we could work with. I'm honestly still haunted by real footage of a giant fin squid, and even pictures makes me want to scream. there's footage out there of shark pups EATING EACH OTHER WHILE STILL IN THE WOMB. there's so, so much to work with
