  • Mother Nature on the other hand gave me a run for my money lol! The take-a-way? Resins can still come back to life after a small hibernation due to cool temps (just not freezing ;-)
    This week ended up being more of a side-step than a step forward but at least I didn't lose ground and have to start over! All said it could have been worse so I'll take it.
    Monday is the start of a new week and there really aren't any variables that can bite me at this point (famous last words??)
    I think I'm in good shape now..
    Have a great weekend and as always Thank You! See you next week :-)!

    The surface temperature of the project is more important than ambient air temperature in the shop. Having done quite a few of this type of repair in cold climates during my fifty odd years of boatbuilding and repair, I would have chosen to make a quickie tent of clear plastic and a few clamp on lights placed at a distance so as to warm the surface without scorching. Uses less energy also. Old school thinking but works. I very seldom use wax when making a repair because the edge doesn,t always cure as well, has something to do with exothermic heat and mil thickness of gel coat, but your choice to use it here was a good one. I agree the clean up would have taken as much time or more as sanding would.

    I just landed an indoor spot to do all my glassing and painting. I'm so excited to delve into staying this work ASAP. From watching all this I have realized that I can not attempt any of this unless I have the right temp. Now that I have a heated indoor bay in a garage the game had changed. I shall be definitely hitting you up on the sites for some questions when I start

    10 FEET!!?!?!? About 1/3rd of the way there Andy! LOL. Yea...Miss it. The warm-up though is no good...they can't get the statues built for Winter Carnival at MTU because of the warm and rain. Need those temps to drop, and for snow to really come down!!

    Glad to see it set up ok to sand Andy 👌 I like to gel coat over the glass to sand as it fills the gaps nicely and smooths the surface quicker, but unfortunately due to usually having to rush off to get the kids lol, I usually end up having to sand the glass before can gel coat.🙄😂

    There is a simple way to rig your boilers so they will phone you at home on your land line. I read how to do it 25 or 30 years ago in Fine Woodworking or Fine Homebuilding Magazine. That's the old-fashioned way and I'm sure there's a more modern, digital way.

    Is there a reason you did not use fairing compound first? Seems like that might be faster than multiple coats of gel. Just wondering what the determining factor was.

    • @boatworkstoday
      @boatworkstoday  Год назад +1

      it's best to topcoat with like materials (poly on top of poly) rather than go overtop with another material like epoxy fairing. But if the fairing was poly based that would have been an option :-)

  • @davemall1

    Can you use a resin with wax instead of gel coat? Is resin cheaper than gelcoat? ...or could you use plastic sheeting to set up your Resin?

    • @boatworkstoday
      @boatworkstoday  Год назад

      any poly based resin will work if a little surfacing wax is mixed in. Plastic may work on spots but doubt it would be consistent enough for a larger area

    Sorry, but did the gel-coat cure or not? That fact wasn't clear in the video.
    About the snow..., when you live in the UP, you gotta expect a lot of snow.
    Why didn't your new boilers let you know somehow, that they had failed?

    • @boatworkstoday

      I think I need a wifi signal up there for any kind of notification to work. Currently there's nothing up there (house wifi doesn't reach). The furnace in town at the store isn't my responsibility (it's a rented space) but they got it sorted out :-) Yes the gelcoat did eventually cure after the temps came up and had a couple days to do it's thing

    Not being a wise guy at all, but literally any Bluetooth thermostat can be set to warn you of temp swings. They are around $100. Seems like a very minor investment.

    • @boatworkstoday
      @boatworkstoday  Год назад

      I believe that relies on having an internet signal? The house wifi doesn't reach up to the shop but will be getting that sorted out soon

    It is always good to learn from others experience. Thanks to your boiler issue I now know what to do if gelcoat doesn’t cure due to temp issues. It was also a great reminder about some older gelcoat with wax (that I didn’t get finished because of temperature issues) that I will need to remove the wax before my next layup. Thanks for sharing that bad with the good.

    • @grahamehill6128
      @grahamehill6128 Год назад

      Murphy’s law, also attributed to the late, great, professor Sodd, simply states “If it can go wrong it will”. Sodd’s law also includes “The thing that drops is the most fragile and expensive” and “ The ability to find something is inversely proportional to the need.”

    you didn't strip that gelcoat off because it didn't cure did you? If you brought the shop up to temp it would have.(sorry didn't really watch not into snow blowing)
