After watching and listening to Rush for so many years, what really draws my attention is to how Neil is playing the drums. He is playing with so much passion, feel and a sense of a victory. Or course based on what he has been through has everything to do with it, but it is very refreshing to see how well prepared he was mentally and physically. It also shows why he is so admired in the music and drum world. Dedication to his art.
Presto will become one of your favorite albums in due time. It just grows on most people and has a vibe that is very inviting for a nice calm afternoon to relax.
Good song, sounds great "Live" and so beautifully performed. For me Rush is always at their very best in live performances. Love it, love the crowd singing as well, this still amazes me that all the young Brazilians in the crowd knowing all the songs and having such a great time. If there was one Rush concert I wish I could have attended, it would be this one, for sure. Thanks Justin.
Neil wrote in Ghost Rider that there were a couple of times he was considering suicide, which I think might have something to do with bringing this back for this tour.
As much as I love Rush live, after seeing them 23 times, I still prefer the studio work at the exception of a few songs. Studio is tough man. Trying to get a feel and groove while playing often separately and on a click and in such a cold and stiff setting. If you've never played in a studio you think it's all easy but it really isn't. Every mistake is amplified. And if you're not perfect on the first couple of takes then the pressure sets in because of the time and budget constraints and then tiredness settles in..... Not easy at all. Playing live allows you much more freedom and leeway. I think their studio work is absolutely incredible.
The camera operator is in love with that gal and I can't blame him... :) Parts of this is as close to country music than I ever hear them get. Love the Alex nuanced color he's doing in parts and his solo.
Hey Justin, I have this concert on Blu-ray. Before I purchased it I was warned away from it for having a bad mix and bad sound quality. But I had already seen half the songs from this concert on RUclips. And it sounded pretty good to me on those RUclips videos, and I have poor internet where I live, so I get low quality streaming. And I figured if it sounds at least as good as what I am hearing on RUclips, then it will be good enough for me. So I went ahead and I purchased the Blu-ray ignoring other people's warnings. When I got the Blu-ray and played it for the first time, the audio sounded like crap. And I just could not understand how they could get much better quality sounding audio on RUclips that is taken from the exact same source. But I was determined, since I had paid for it, that I was going to force myself to watch the concert all the way through at least once. And while I was watching the rest of the video and trying to make the best of it, I decided to try to adjust things and see if I could make it sound as best as possible with what I had to work with. And so I stopped playing it and went back to the main Blu-ray menu, just to see what the audio settings were and I went into the audio menu and discovered it was set for stereo sound. But I also discovered that it had an option to put it into true surround 5.1 audio mode. So I did that, and then since I'm pumping out the video and audio via HDMI through my projector I decided to see what my projectors audio settings were on. It was set for DTS. But my projector also had the option of selecting stereo surround, DTS, and true surround 5.1. So I then put my projector into true surround 5.1 audio mode as well. From the projector I had audio out going to my component surround sound system which is also a true surround 5.1 capable amp. Once I had all the audio options selected in the same configuration of Tru Surround 5.1, suddenly the audio was absolutely amazing! It is my belief that people who own this DVD/Blu-ray or have watched it at least, have done so with audio options of the disc not corresponding to their disc player or sound system in general. It indeed does sound like crap if you do not have the audio settings all in sync. I am so glad now that I did not listen to others and I did get the Blu-ray because it is an incredible concert and has incredible 5.1 surround audio and I love playing it every chance I get.
I think I remember you saying in the Presto overview that you got into this song more. I think it’s well crafted, like a proper song not just instrumentation with vocals added if that makes any sense.
The mix on the DVD version that you're watching does seem nicely balanced. The CD version, which is where most of us first heard the Rio concert is very bass heavy to the point that you often need to adjust your EQ a bit. I still love the CDs but that's likely what people are referring to. Great review as always!
I don’t hear it in this one either. I did on the first couple songs though. Maybe it was something they worked out at the concert. I’m not sure I’ve seen those songs in Rio before. Love this song. Glad they played it again.
One of my favourite tracks of music ever. Very nice performance! think i`ll pick the cd up soon. I really like the mix it`s fantastic! Bravado next, oh boy love that track too!
It is interesting that your perception is that the mix is okay when I was thinking that I could hear the vocals were a bit down in the mix. I have the original DVD and compared it to this video on the same speakers and the youtube mix is definitely a little flat through the mid to high frequencies compared to the DVD. I wonder if it seems off to some of us because we are used to the mix on the DVD directly.
I’ve never ever heard anything about the mix until you people started telling you here. It’s never been a ‘thing’ like Vapor Trails. I’ve always thought it sounded great. I think they won the Juno or something for best DVD concert performance or something with this concert. You do need to watch the Boys in Brazil. Great doc of this. I know, I know I’m the first to tell you this. 😆
Eventually, you might even come to appreciate Roll the Bones! … which raises a question for me: which Rush songs have you most re-evaluated after hearing a live version?
Oooff ummm I don't want to say cause we're not there yet on the releases.... but aside from that one, I don't think any. If listening to the album version multiple times didn't do it for me, i don't think live will do it.
Maybe it's picky, but the Presto mix (maybe the remastered more so) is really distinct and there are lots of little sound effects and the guitar all seem more distinct. Maybe that's what I hear. However, I realize that one can never really capture studio quality, live.
That's what I thought. But it can be applied to someone remembering this feeling that everything is possible after graduation to find out years later unfulfilled promises and broken dreams... And despair. Thanks for your reply.
@@mdu2112 Good point. I re-read the whole lyrics and yeah ... "And NOW you're trembling on a rocky ledge..." could be decades after the "schoolyard" swagger.
Totally relate to this. I was introduced to Rush when Moving Pictures was the new album. Loved it! Bought every album going backwards, and I fell deeply in love. Then I began buying every NEW album going forwards starting with Signals. And I noticed that I was SOOO DISAPPOINTED with EVERY new Rush album (except Clockwork Angels). Some became "fine wine" like Signals and Vapor Trails. But a couple never aged well ... like Presto and Test for Echo.
My problem with the mix is something that I can't explain. The levels are all good and it sounds great taken in as one song. However by the end of the Blu-Ray, my ears have a slight ring to them (after listening at volume levels similar to every other show) and I feel "tired" of listening. I have yet to identify what the problem is, but I just struggle to watch multiple songs on this disc. I wonder if it could be high frequencies that I can no longer hear somehow negatively affecting my ears just by their presence?
The Pass is definitely in my top 120 Rush songs. heh. The lyrics are large and poignant ... but the instrumental parts, the music, is dull and featureless to me.

So true, Presto is my fave Rush post-Signals!
Geddy has said Niel was very proud of this song and that Niel put a lot of work in to the lyrics. Enough said.
"good job alex" made me lol. I always wondered if they just turned off alex's mic and didn't tell him haha. Great reaction as always

One of my favorites. This version in Rio is amazing
I agree, there is no problem with the mix. Everything sounds great.
great smooth one, the next one is even better, good concert,🤘🤘🤘
"The Pass" Such a beautiful song. "All of us get Lost in the Darkness, Dreamers Learn to Stir By the Stars"
I always felt that this song was a snapshot of Geddy and Rush in the thrall of bands like Level 42. It's a good song.
Love this song!
The camera operator is in love with that gal and I can't blame him... :)

Justin (COUNTER-CHORUS) Panariello 😛😜😝🤪🤣😂🤘🏻✌🏻
Powerful song!
I bought a Jazz bass 3 months ago and this is the first song I'm going full Geddy, singing and slappin-a-the-bass... YMMV.
Ye, repeat really what I said yesterday. Musically, i do prefer this live. The lyrics are awesome, but then they always are.
When I have "dark thoughts", I always like to listen to this song.

The Pass was excellent here. And I agree...the mix is good.
Allan Weirib, Geddy's brother has a part of the video production.
Justin (Yeah it’s a cool one yeah I like it…better than 74-85? NO…but I like it it’s cool) Panariello
Some hit you right away...some are a slow burn. All great RUSH.
DVD definitely sounds better than the CD IMO
There's a better live version floating around on youtube from the Presto tour where Geddy really sings it with passion and intention.
Yeah, good song. No problem with the mix.
One of my favourite tracks of music ever. Very nice performance! think i`ll pick the cd up soon. I really like the mix it`s fantastic! Bravado next, oh boy love that track too!
The mix is fine. It’s live. Kids today expect Justin Bieber auto tune.

Didn't realize Alex sang quite a few songs.
did he though? lol

Justin, the song is about teenage suicide. I'm glad you didn't rip on it...Bravado is another deep song...
Where does the song hint at teenage? I'm not trolling; I'm serious.
@@mdu2112 I visualized "teenage" from the very first line: "Proud swagger out of the schoolyard."
That's what I thought. But it can be applied to someone remembering this feeling that everything is possible after graduation to find out years later unfulfilled promises and broken dreams... And despair. Thanks for your reply.

@@mdu2112 The lyrics by drummer Neil Peart address teenage suicide and the tendency to romanticize it.
Justin, as a diehard Rush fan from the beginning, everytime I got a new Rush album...I HATED it!!! It took time like a fine wine to accept it...
Totally relate to this. I was introduced to Rush when Moving Pictures was the new album. Loved it! Bought every album going backwards, and I fell deeply in love. I think Presto is in the bottom tier of Rush’s catalog but I do like this song quite a bit.
Not a big fan of this song but I think it sounds pretty good in this live performance.
The Pass took a few times to grow on me.
My problem with the mix is something that I can't explain. The levels are all good and it sounds great taken in as one song. Cigarette lighters in the air moment ...
I always thought this mix was awesome, powerful and pretty clear. Seen enough big names that sounded way poorer than this.
Yes, you didn’t get it at first, but all of us Rushheads know you’re a little slow. Ahh, turnabout is fair play after your April fools prank, right?
Quality tune, but I'm not sure why this was a live tune Rush busted out beyond the Presto tour. It's ... sad.
Yeah, not sure why it's one of their favorites.
The Pass is definitely in my top 120 Rush songs. heh. The lyrics are large and poignant ... but the instrumental parts, the music, is dull and featureless to me.
Good to see the sensitive side come through....good on ya!
