Ive read in old tomes that a dark wing case simulates the nymph just before it starts to emerge. Apparently, the wing case turns dark at that time, a sort of "negative hot spot." I dunno, but it always sticks in my mind. I like this one because it is simple and uncomplicated. Thanks and Merry Xmas
That's interesting, and I'll bet there's a lot of truth to it. This fly would probably be better with simple brown duck or pheasant tail fibers for the wingcase. But the recipe called for partridge and I already had it out. :-)
That was cool Matt! Many years ago I made up a personal pattern very similar to this fly, it has caught a lot of fish for me. I have given many away to other fishermen, hope it worked for them as well. My pattern is called the Autumn nymph. This was to cool. Thanks for sharing, until next time. 😀👍
Its super cool i found your page today, it took watching a few videos to hear your in Maryland And also seeing you mention savage river on your Facebook id say we fish alot of the same water! The savage river watershed is what brought me into the fly fishing hobby about 7-8 years ago. The forrest up there is my home away from home haha! Great work on your videos and instructions!
Thanks Broc and welcome to the channel my friend! I'm in southern MD (near Waldorf) but consider the Gunpowder my home water. Unless I'm out at my farm in western MD and then it's the Savage. And oddly enough, I just got back from my farm this evening. I fished the Savage yesterday morning. I started at the Garrett bridge and waded up through the 7x pool then after a couple hours of nothing, drove up to one of the small tributaries just above the reservoir. Nothing there either so a skunk of a day for me. And didn't see another fisherman all day so maybe the locals knew something I didn't. But still, always fun to be on the water. :-)
Thanks for another great video Matt, especially since you could easily have said "It's Christmas, no video today". Hope you and the family are enjoying your Holiday. Stay safe & healthy. Merry Christmas to you, your family and everyone here on "Savage Flies"
Thanks Garrett and you too my friend! And BTW, this weekend is definitely a weekend off with the family... I recorded a couple of videos before we headed out of town and scheduled them to post. RUclips makes it easy for us to schedule ahead of time. :-)
Nice fly Matt. thanks for all your amazing videos! Ive learned more than you know from your channel. It is hands down the fly tying channel I watch the most. Merry Christmas to you and yours my friend.
Merry Christmas Matt and family! Nice fly..very fitting with the word Lord in the name on Christmas day!🙂 Going to be almost 90 here today..might be fishing in shorts later. Have a great one my friend! God bless! 🎄👍❤️✝️
I hear you Charlie! It's 65 degrees here in western Maryland today. I'll be on the water tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to fool a few of these wild browns. :-)
Merry Christmas Matt. Hope you and your family are enjoying being at the farm. I hope the weather is much nicer than the -20F that we have here. Just having my morning coffee, watching you tie a fly and enjoying the peaceful morning. Enjoyed the video Matt and this is another going on the “to do” list. Take care Matt.
Holy cow John! I'll say it's much better. It's an oddly warm 65F here today. We just got back from a hike (in short sleeves) and I get all day tomorrow on the water. I'll be at the trophy section on the Savage at sunrise. :-) Hope you're having a great Christmas too my friend. :-)
Good Christmas Morning Sir Matt, The Lord Gray is a very attractive looking fly. I have plenty of partridge and squirrel and will definitely be tying up quite a few of these. I hope you and your family are having a wonderful Christmas enjoy the rest of your Christmas weekend
Thanks Edward; you too! It's been a great Christmas so far. And if the weather holds out, I'll get out to the Savage for some fishing in the morning. :-)
Absolutely Jim! It was a good morning with the kids. Just got back from a hike and now Lisa is making a ham and some shrimp and grits (her old South Carolina recipe). Good stuff! But the best is yet to come... 55-60 degrees here and I'll be on the Savage at sunrise trying to fool these wild browns out here. Merry Christmas to you and Joyce too!
@@SavageFlies Shrimp and grits oh my gosh love it! Grits means “Girls Raised In The South”. Joyce is from Charleston SC. And we love whole hog BBQ. Family is always good and I hope you fool lots of fish. Send some pictures 👍
Thanks Nicole! I've never tied on any Togens hooks but I just looked this one up and it looks quite cool. Most curved shanks like this are 3x long. I see Daiichi also has a curved 2x long but man, these things are pricey!
Merry Christmas Matt hope you n your family have a wonderful day and be safe. I like the looks of that fly. That will probably be my next one I do. Thanks for the videos that you post. Thanks again
Hi Matt, again I appreciate the quality of the content and editing. This is becoming my favorite fly tying channel on RUclips. You have mentioned using your coffee grinder to prep dubbing. May I request you do a video about prepping and working the dubbing material prior to tying. Thanks.
Thanks Wes; I appreciate the encouragement my friend! If you've got 23 minutes to spare, this video goes into quite a bit of detail on how I make my dubbing. If you're just looking for synthetics, that's covered in the first few minutes but I do go into how I mix and make fur dubbings too. ruclips.net/video/U_vp9bO0sSg/видео.html
Merry Christmas Matt and to everybody on the channel. That is a cool, buggy looking fly. One thing for sure. I’ll look just as cool tying this one, wearing my new Savage Flies shirt from Santa. Thanks for sharing a great video and tying job. Sure appreciate all you do my friend. 😉
Ha! You do make me laugh Jeff. Hope you had a great Christmas. We had a good one here. A little rainy today but a lot warmer than normal and tomorrow looks like it could be a great day on the river. I'll let you know how I do. :-)
This one definitely looks like a fish catcher, good looking fly Matt Definitely going to try this one out Thanks for the video and Merry Christmas to you and your family Hope you have a great one
Merry Christmas Matt and everyone else that watches him tie flies. Another nice simple fly. I might be able to use a few of these. I'm hopefully going to look at a really cheap fixer upper house that's not quite on a lake but it's less than a quarter mile to an unimproved public launch site which would be perfect for some still water fishing and I have a lake view without the lake tax bill. Keep the good stuff coming Matt.
That sounds about ideal Dave! When we were looking at retirement properties here in western Maryland I found a couple acres on the Savage River but we decided we wanted to raise animals and maybe start an orchard. We found a big plot to do that but it's on the North Branch of the Potomac and not the Savage. Oh well... I just have to drive a little way to get to the good trout water. :-) Good luck with your property hunt!
Going to be gift opening with my siblings and parents soon Hopefully I’ll get that first fly rod! Merry Christmas Ayy, got the fly rod and some fly tying stuff!
Hey Matt, my first Christmas present today 🤓Thanks! The name is similar to the Dark Lord, a Prince Nymph variant, maybe why it sounded familiar to you. Nice Adams - like nymph.Think I'll tie it with and without the wing case. All these royal titles remind me of the Earl Grey, tied by R.C.Bigelow in the 1800's. It was tied with the fur of the bergamot, found in Calabria Italy. 😉Have a Holly Jolly Christmas All
Appreciate it Joe; and Merry Christmas to you too! So the Earl Grey is a tea and a fly pattern. Interesting... the name R.C. Bigelow does sound familiar so maybe that is where I've heard of something similar. Now the Dark Lord may have to be a Halloween pattern. :-) Okay, off to bed early here as I hope to be on the Savage by the time the sun comes up. Have a great weekend my friend!
Not this week Frank... Santa brought me a new deer rifle. :-) I'll be out with my fly rod Sunday. It's unseasonably warm here in Maryland so could make for a productive day. Fingers crossed!
I'll put it on the list Krishna. I do have a couple of black ants that could easily be tied in brown. I have a deer hair ant and foam ant that could work for you. :-)
Win what Dave?? There was no drawing on this one! But if you're talking about the tool kit and bobbin holder... no, sorry. And I got those things mailed out before Christmas. Don't worry though; I'll have a few things up for grabs in January. :-)
Merry Christmas everyone
Merry Christmas Matt, and to all who read these comments. Thanks for all the great tying tips. Cheers!
