I agree with you 100% I ride a 50cc scooter. It tops out at around 40 MPH and I'm happy with that. I am at the age that I am in no big hurry to get anywhere fast. I get there when I get there. If you know how to turn a wrench, you can get quit a few years out of a scooter. Mine is a 2012 and it's still going strong.

Must respect! that you’re brave enough to take a 50cc scooter on a highway. But a lot of stuff that you’ve been talking about in this video I have said my Self to so many people.it doesn’t matter how fast you get there as long as you get there. Scooters are what they are and I love em, but they really should change the laws.
2 regulations specifically. The step-through design regulation which requires a moped to have pedals or be a sit down position limits how they can be designed. Without that, they could simply be 50cc motorcycles that are twist and go instead of just the "scooter" design..
The other is the speed/horsepower limit. That law hasn't been changed since the 1920s, and something like 70cc and 8 horsepower would be more ideal for modern roads. And 45mph instead of 30mph. I still find it odd I can buy a 800HP Dodge Demon but can only ride a 50cc with that licence 😂

I have my motorcycle license and can't decide over the 50cc to 125cc. You're right about the prices, I just can't believe what people are asking and paying. I'm in Canada, it's $3,600 for a brand new and people are asking $2,700 - $3000 CAD for their 17 year old Ruckus with high miles. The price is not much more of a 125cc - 155cc so I think I'm going for the bigger bike. Thanks for your video and input, very helpful!

Corey, good subject to highlight because anyone considering a scooter should take into consideration a number of factors. I notice you live in a relatively flat area and in that case 50cc is fun and works perfect. I live in Seattle where we have hills everywhere and my 50cc struggles to get up the hill nearest my home although for some reason I can beat those Honda Ruckas bikes, not sure why. I purchased mine at about the same time during the height of the Pandemic because I was driving my luxury car (V6) guzzler a short distance where I would walk for some daily exercise. Not having a motorcycle-endorsement on my drivers license also lent to the decision to buy a 50cc bike.
In my younger years I rode all kinds of motorcycles, so I was not intimidated by riding or buying a scooter. I love any excuse to go ride but I dearly love flat roads. I ride a lovely Piaggio-Typhoon (silly name, I know) but a great little bike.

    • @CoreyOlsonLevi
      @CoreyOlsonLevi  4 года назад +2

Yeah I think a lot of people in Illinois buy/sell 49cc scooters all the time. Some people will get them, own them for a summer or two, then sell after they have fun. Chicago is pretty close to Wisconsin and Indiana which have a lot more trails, farms, etc. It seems like there's a group of people here who buy ATVs and boats or similar toys and hop over to the neighboring states to enjoy them on the holidays or vacations. Anyways, I've known 2-3 people who got a 50cc and turned around to sell it after a summer. Seems like the resale value is pretty good around here, might just be the area.

just randomly found your channel searching around for the Illinois laws for mopeds and motorized bikes it's all one big loophole lol, some sites/videos say you don't need a license some say you need a Specific endorsement/license and currently I don't own a vehicle or have anyone to help me acquire a license so I'm looking at all the options to get around outside of my bike which is really becoming too tiring to ride. yea I'm only 23 but at the same time I've been commuting 20-30 miles a day around town for the greater part of the last 8 years and I'm really starting to feel it. I'm caught between buying a motorized kit for my MTB but with motorized kits/ Minibikes becoming so popular in Chicago theft is going through the roof. I wonder if downstate where I'm planning on moving to my Fiancé the laws will be more lenient? every time I'm out there all I see is motorized kits, Dirtbikes, UTVs, Golf carts etc. Hell, the last time I was in coal city I seen an older gentleman who appeared to be pushing 80 flying by on a ATV with the worlds biggest smile 😂😂I'm kind of leaning more towards the moped side just because it seems more practical and safer to me, i eventually want a motorcycle but for now, I don't know if id trust a standard MTB flying down the road at 40+ over a moped designed to do so...

  • @F22C1
    @F22C1 Год назад +1

I got myself a Ruckus a few years back to toy around with. Our state doesn't require 49cc scooters to be plated. I treat mine like a bicycle when choosing which roads to ride on. It works out, but limits the experience somewhat. I don't want to ride much faster in all honesty, but I also don't need people tailgating me.

Really enjoyed the video, the lady and I agree that the restraint of excess in getting a 50cc is cool because you do have to be a little more thoughtful about how you plan your routes and such.
I will say though, I did start out on and still have my 750cc shadow, but recently bought a 50cc tomos moped. And I love them both just for different reasons. I can take a long comfortable cruise on my shadow, but just for buzzing around town I really enjoy the tomos so I totally get why some people might want multiple bikes. And with the hills in Pennsylvania a 50cc isn't enough in a lot of situations at least for a 4 stroke scooter, 50cc two strokes are okay.

Laws in MS have changed over the past few years to where ever scooter with 10 inch wheels, even 50cc scooters now require the motorcycle endorsement, tag, and insurance.
I was getting around on an ebike but it topped out between 16-20 mph with me pedaling full speed with highest pedal assist setting, which ran the battery down fast. I had people hit my handle bars, throw beer bottles at my head, ride my bumper instead of go around me. So, hoping the 50cc will solve a lot of the harassment issues.
I've owned a 125cc and a 150cc, never owned a 50cc, but I feel like 35 mph should be a decent speed, and at least headlight and tail lights are there at night. Might even use hazard lights on my 5 mile commute home at night.
One big factor for me is the dependability of the brand. I owned a 150cc off brand Chinese scooter and had nothing but problems. Owned a Yamaha 125cc, but I wasn't familiar with all of the maintenance, so carburetor got gunked up, and I thought I just needed to change engine oil, so never changed gear old...newbie, uneducated mistakes. Even with not doing maintenance, I got 13k miles on a Yamaha Vino 125cc.
So, from everything I've read and watched, a fuel injected 4 stroke 50cc Honda Metropolitan seems to be a great option for reliability, finding parts, top speed, and just looks good in my opinion. Old school body shape, so I think people assume it's slow, which it is, compared to 125cc scooters that look like motorcycles. Going through roadblocks, when I had a 150cc that looked like a crotch rocket, the cops checked everything. With the Yamaha, they just waved me through. So, a Honda metropolitan should be low profile, so people assume, I will just go slow and drive around me.

Sorry, I had to pause the video when it got to around 26:07 . The reason why we have multiple bikes is so that we don’t put wear and tear on one bike and it becomes more of a collection thing for us. We’re in it more for the sport of it we drive them, but we are hobbiest Also, a lot of us repair the bikes And stuff like that so yeah, we’re just really into our bikes the same way a woman that collects purses is really into their purses and namebrand stuff. If you want even simpler than a 50cc scooter, you could also get a 1000w electric bike with a hub drive motor and you'd basically go the same speed. It's extremely simple. No gas, no oil, no spark plug, no chain (for the motor; only for the pedals). Weight is about the same too, for a 1000w e-bike with a sizable battery.

And to that point I would say the Yamaha smax is the Goldilocks scooter, just Barely big enough for safe interstate while still keeping the convenience of the small size scooter. Again, keep up the good videos man, Sorry if my comment that spurred this video seemed offensive. Maybe I should’ve articulated it a little better, in hindsight regret wasn’t really what I ment as much as now that you have some experience with the 50cc do you maybe wish you had done it differently. Not to say that I thought you should have done it differently but more just to get your general opinion on the topic.

Nah man, I don't mind. I appreciate the question. If I had a bit more money probably would have ended up with the 250cc Yamaha. We are a single-income family, so if I had more money to throw around then yeah I probably wouldn't mind a $5-7k scooter. My dad has a very nice Aprilia 250cc that i like. But in that range I really feel like it starts to compete with a car. Maybe once our family gets a little more settled in I can get some toys. My business was going to do very well this year (e.g., ~$250k - $300k profit) but the coronavirus totally messed up our cash flow, orders, operations, everything. It has been a pretty big disaster and I started this business like ~9 years ago in my apartment; was finally about to make a decent profit (we had just been re-investing in the business each year) then all this coronavirus shutdown stuff happened. Crazy. I will hopefully get everything sorted out, and some free time again; in the future I still hope to get my motorcycle license.

I had a Yamaha CA50. Moved because it was a 2 stroke. Unfortunately, I did not know anything about engines back then. You were supposed to add 2 stroke oil when the container is low and the bike automatically mixes the fuel. I never added the oil and I’m sure you can guess the rest. Too bad because it was a nice bike.

A 50cc scooter is fine if all you do not need to go long distances, and actually for most people that is the case.
As a single person, I want a real motorcycle, as it is my only vehicle, so for long journeys I want a vehicle that can do long distances. If I were in a relationship, then a combination of a car and scooter/small motorcycle makes far more sense than 2 cars.

I'm thinking about investing in a moped 50cc, just not sure if i should take a automatic or geared.
Right now my chooice lies between a cheap iva venice or iva roma €1150 euro 50cc bike (automatic)
    or
a BTC Raw Hanway 50cc cafe racer (geared) €2000
    The BTC is 1Liter - 50km
and the iva scooter is 1 liter - 35 km
(so after 50.000 km which i would make between 2,5 - 5 years,
there isn't mutch of a price difrence between these 2 mopeds)
i don't plan on tunning the bike to go faster than 45kmh/28mph.
Also I heared that geared mopeds are more expansive to maintain, and have to be maintained more frequently.
i don't know how mutch and how often. (which i would like to know).
Right now i estamate a full maintainance at 10.000-15.000km. and small maintainances per 500-1000km.
    (For both bikes)
I can imagine that gear shifting with sandales on is not comfortable, so i lean on taking a automatic.
yet i also think that shifting gear on a geared bike is also allot of fun to do.
Thats about it, im not sure which bike i should get.

Riding far to the right on roads is DANGEROUS FOR YOU! You are essentially telling idiot car drivers that they can squeeze past you in the same lane. DON'T DO THAT! Stay in the right car track if you must be on the right. You have the legal right to the entire lane on a scooter or a bicycle.
In many states a 125 cc scooter is too small by law for interstate highways. They only go 50-55 mph at maximum speed. Hills and winds could drop that to 40 mph.
The most fun motorcycle I've owned (by a hair) was a Honda Metropolitan. Which has a 49 cc engine. What made it so much fun was its tiny size. It had a real top speed of probably 33-35 mph. The weight was only 176 pounds. It had bad brakes and a rough ride.
My only transportation now is a 125 cc KYMCO Agility. The taller seat, and 50 pounds more weight are negatives. The higher speed and slightly larger under seat storage capacity are benefits. Riding on 35-40 mph roads it gets 90.51 mpg. Riding on longer 50 mph roads it gets only 60 mpg. If it were a newer modern model with fuel injection it would do much better than that.
Why own two motorcycles or scooters, if you can? Flat tires can't be changed quickly on motorcycles. Having a spare motorcycle is why I originally bought my Metropolitan. Then I fell in love with it.

I'm also pondering a 50cc or 125cc scooter. You sound like you live close to La Grange.
Class M gives you a valid motorcycle license to legally operate any motorcycle with an engine size of 150 cubic centimeters (cc) or greater. The Class L license is for riding a motor-driven cycle with less than 150cc engine size. Note, riding an electric scooter does not require a special license.

Hi Corey, Great informative video for folks looking to buy a 50cc. I am thinking of buying a roadhouse R50 to use 2 days out of the week to get me to work. One straight road max speed limit 45 mph although as you pointed out folks drive a little faster. The commute would be approx 10 miles one way. Would you be ok riding that distance….Again, it would only be a couple of days a week. Need another mode of transport but I can’t afford a 4th car.

    • @CoreyOlsonLevi
      @CoreyOlsonLevi  Год назад

I’ve done ~10 mile trips on the 50cc but it’s a bit long. You would have to really enjoy the commute. 50cc is great for trips under 4-5 miles, like 1-4 miles around the city or short suburban commutes. Past 5 miles of driving you would probably prefer 125cc or more, with speed and everything considered.

You can remove the restrictor ring easily but I believe it results in slower acceleration for only a small improvement in top speed. I just left mine as it was. My scooter story:
I was tired of traffic for short trips, like to the mall or a food run. I live close to a very large mall/foody area. So I purchased a Chinese 50CC scooter (Grace 50 ZN50QT-51) from the FB Marketplace for $1200. Being new to scooters, I had no idea if it was a good deal or not. Later I discovered that I could purchase the same scooter for $800 + shipping which added another $400 and a 10-20 day delivery time.
I went to the address the seller sent, to find it was a guy in his garage. The scooter was brand new with no miles on it. 1st impression was -- Cheap Vespa Reproduction --. 🤔
The color was a turquoise shade with a Vespa style to it with black trim, but it was made of plastic. Great! It's light and I weigh in at 210 pounds. I started to wonder if I would be too heavy for a 50CC scooter. 🤔 After the test ride, I was surprised that it was able to get up to ~45MPH. The seller stated that it had a 80CC upgrade kit installed by his friend who works at a small engine shop but he hadn't been able to test ride it.
Nest day I wanted to see how it would perform. I went on a 25 mile ride via backroads to a friends house. It took me ~35-40 mins to make the trip. It was like having a bike that you don't have to pedal!! Now I admit, it could go a little faster cause driving longer than 20 miles takes a toll on both you and the scooter. Poor little thing is under strain the entire trip. But... driving ~10 miles or less is perfect! Anymore than that -- just get in your car and go 😜
Going to Chic-Fil-A takes about 10 mins now VS. taking over 45 mins to an hour depending on the traffic. Scooters = no traffic because you ride it like you would your regular pedal bike.
Downside is: I look like a total DORK riding it. but HAHA I get almost 100 miles to a gallon of gas. My daily driver is a 800HP gas drinking complete money pit that gets about 8 gallons to the mile.
So in closing.. yeah I got a great deal on the cheap scooter, and I am going to paint it ASAP.
