One interesting bit of trivia about this episode. At the time, Patrick Hoban was easily the most influential player in the community, and ppl would look up to see what he deemed the "best deck". He topped a tournament with lighsworn rulers as soon as they were released, ensuring a lot of people started playing that deck. Then he preceeded to enter nationals with Sylvan. He later explains that he knew ppl were going to netdeck him as long as what he was playing was good enough, so he attempted to manipulate the meta by getting everyone into LS rulers, while keepig the "better" Sylvan deck to himself.
That's the danger with focusing too hard on what the pros/meta are playing, it gives them the chance to manipulate the information so everyone else is under prepared. Some could say it's a bit scummy, but honestly people copying the "top decks," almost always verbatim, was a lot more toxic to the longevity of the game 🤔 (though it was more of a problem during this period of time iirc, so maybe people learned from this bait and switch 🤔 .)
That's still a problem to this day. But at least now the sims have gotten better to allow people to experiment without paying a fortune so they can realize what they're actually going to be able to do well with.
And also how long it was released before it started getting used. It came out in Starstrike Blast (same set as Formula Synchron), and it was almost never used until Ruler format
This is the most minor cheat in the series so far, but when Cimo revealed for Sylvan Charity at the beginning of Game 1, he was also supposed to reveal Sagequoia since you reveal both cards. MBT gets almost nothing from that tidbit of extra information, but it’s in the back of my brain so I thought I’d mention it.
In present day HAT format, Sylvan lists look a bit different. The combos are basically the same, but many people have cut down on the floodgates and Kuribandit to increase turn one combo potential. Archfiend’s Oath is pretty much standard in Sylvans now. Although you occasionally have to blindly guess the top card of your deck, it happens a lot less often than you’d think. It’s kind of like extra copies of Upstart Goblin in some situations, but you can also trigger Sylvan effects by intentionally calling the card wrong to get the mill effect. It pairs incredibly well with both Sylvan Charity and Mount Sylvania. The fact that it’s a continuous spell makes it great for follow up plays too. Players have recently been testing builds of Sylvan that run trade-in for even more draw power and Malefic Stardust Dragon as a level 8 extender.
One of the great things about Oath is that it offers a method of outing Vanity's via stacking Shroom/Marsh without having to run MST in main as in other hands its just a good extender.
Could you link me a modern HAT Sylvan list? These techs seem super cool. I've been playing HAT with friends but I've mostly only been able to find lists from when the format was going on.

I remember a couple funny tidbits about both of these decks and they both involve Patrick Hoban: -Hoban was initially on Sylvan during this stage of the format but pivoted to LS Ruler, a seemingly worse deck before jumping back to Sylvan for nats. Why? Because he knew that if he piloted LS Ruler and word got out people would buy into the hype of the deck, play it at Nats and he'd be able to pick up easier wins on them with his superior Sylvan deck. This was one of the first instances where Hoban would use how the playerbase acts to his advantage (the most infamous one of these being Djinngate). -One of my friends was at Nationals and was passing by one of the tables that happened to have Hoban at them and the man was on tilt or something. I think time was coming up? All I know is that he distinctly remembered Hoban yelling, "It takes more than a minute to resolve Sylvan Charity!" and it's become a meme in our friend group since.

The deck; combined with lavalval chain and soul charge was a notable player with crazy turn 1’s. There's a reason why the format is named after a grindy control deck and not either of the sacky explosive combo decks they played for this episode. Vanity's is unironically not that problematic when you're summoning a couple of monsters per turn at most and trading with backrow every turn. It's like when MBT went out of his way to run Scythe when he played HAT and lost to Cimo's Geargia deck because Scythe does nothing against grindy control strategies.
MBT hand in game 3 is why some people ran Hand Destruction. Wyvern and rulers are really bad in hand so a card to fix that is really nice. As I liked to tell myself "going minus one doesn't matter if you win next turn."
Ahh, Sylvans. I remember wanting to build this deck as soon as I saw it. It was such a fun but competitive deck. Felgrand and miracle fertilizer really gave this deck its power! One thing didnt come up in this episode is that the sylvan rank 8 can stack the top 8 cards of your deck, when paired with draw effect like charity or upstart and with 3 vanity in deck this almost means search vanity on turn one.
*This list looks like the 5th place Oceania LIGHTSWORN deck, except they played 0 soul charge.* They played gold sarc too. He’s the only list I’ve ever seen play Leo too.
Been playing Rikka Sylvan in 2023 (now 2024 as its Jan 1st nice) and... Sylvan Dancepione is just actually an insane link monster? Dancepione excavate 3 is literally just double e-tele. Then you level fix... and she doesn't negate the cards that come out. So Dance into stuff like Lonefire or Mardel, Hermitree, etc it just feels insane. THEN after that you go Aromage Jasmine, then the new Aromage link 3. Then Benghalancer. Not even considering all the rikka cards too. And the Sylvan Rank 1 Xyz is ALSO insane?? Revive any plant pitching any plant and you make it so incredibly easy between Dancepione/Evilthorn/Rikka-Petal/All the sylvan level 1's.
I swear, the SECOND I saw the new Lore, I just hit the like button and laughed myself sick for half the video!! I love this!! Also great dueling today!
I'm glad you didn't show off the Stardust Spark Dragon/Vanity's Emptiness combo. I absolutely hated that combo even more than Emptiness by itself back in the day. Doesn't getting around the downside of one of the most powerful floodgates in the game's history so fun!?
Sagequoia's summon from hand is a "when ... you can" effect so the activation window can be missed Most importantly, if you draw off of hermitree after milling a sylvan. The draw was the last thing to happen, not the sylvan going to grave
Missed the early mention of just how fat Komushroomo's behind is. Its even better than Geargia's 1900 def. I'm a big proponent of Vanity's from a time when special summons were uncommon and, well, special and not combo pieces but the longer History goes the more I get it. I still think an effect like it should exist but it needs to burn the activator just as hard. Really force everyone into playing beatstick YGO. Not just "You can't set up after I have" the card.
can't wait for them to get to the "mist of resolving, crowning with the pure green leaf, praise to their father, blessed by the water black night dark sky the devils cry" deck in a couple of episodes
@@geiseric222 And MST solves the whole problem. And i know that most decks don't play much spell and trap removal. But this is only the case because it's rarely useful to have Spell and trap removal. And i prefer playing a longer game where i have the chance of drawing my outs compared to loosing all my life points in Turn 2. But this is a preference thing. Giving an archetype a Brainstorm is a hilarious part of history that I'm just learning about. This format rules outside of Vanity's though
This deck was so hard them made a whole nuisances teaching you it (Sylvan Learning)
I LOVE HAT FORMAT!!!
I LOVE EVERY GAME BEING DECIDED BY VANITIES AND MAXX C!!!
I hope y’all cover one of my fav old decks from this period- ilmos (stands for in loving memory of Stratos) it topped in Jan 2014 and was a deck based around using monsters with stratos like effects to gain value-the name refers to the fact that stratos was banned around that time
Some people did test using sylvan charity in infernity: so they could empty their hand.
Next week will probably be XYZ Infernity. It's about the only deck they haven't used yet.
One thing didnt come up in this episode is that the sylvan rank 8 can stack the top 8 cards of your deck, when paired with draw effect like charity or upstart and with 3 vanity in deck this almost means search vanity on turn one.
I love the History of Vanity's Emptiness
He would’ve won one turn earlier because he hit the komushrumo and didn’t use the effect. That misplay could’ve cost him the game

Ohhh....... so this is gonna be one of THOSE kinda episodes, huh? I thought you had to be a Starlight Rare Patron to watch those vids 😏😏😏
*This list looks like the 5th place Oceania LIGHTSWORN deck, except they played 0 soul charge.* They played gold sarc too. He’s the only list I’ve ever seen play Leo too.
This is the best intro for a sponsor I’ve ever seen
MBT didn't have to do gage dirty like that
Theyre just straight up encouraging MPreg fics at this point...
So we're close to 100 episodes in the History of Yu-Gi-Oh! Awesome👍👍
I loved my lightsworn deck. Nothing beat the opening hand brick with Wulf taunting me
Wow I played this exact Lightsworn deck when I came back into Yugioh, ah the nostalgia
Vanity's Emptiness is a fair and balanced card.
When Konami is so done with the stackers that makes it an actual game mechanic, and of course the deck performs really well.
I swear, the SECOND I saw the new Lore, I just hit the like button and laughed myself sick for half the video!! I love this!! Also great dueling today!
So early Ruxin and the Auction Series hasn't returned yet
23:34 You know how the saying goes: When you draw a bunch of bricks, make a brick house.
I love the Sylvan cards. Plants have always been one of my favorite.
This was honestly the best format
I'm glad you didn't show off the Stardust Spark Dragon/Vanity's Emptiness combo. I absolutely hated that combo even more than Emptiness by itself back in the day. Doesn't getting around the downside of one of the most powerful floodgates in the game's history so fun!?
Mystic Dragon rulers needs an episody. And a final episody of HAT with they wheel returning. And next... Pendulums, BA and dolls...
Sagequoia's summon from hand is a "when ... you can" effect so the activation window can be missed
Most importantly, if you draw off of hermitree after milling a sylvan. The draw was the last thing to happen, not the sylvan going to grave
No, read hermitree.
Wow. So hyped for this Episode- Lightsworns vs. Sylvans, I loved combos those two archetypes could make in one turn during that time so much🤩🤓💥👍
Cimo hyped up the sylvan xyz so hard and then didn't even use it.
26:19 Cimo could have destroyed the set MST via Komushroomo getting excavated to the graveyard
Truly an uncut gem
FYI @Cimooo: you have to reveal both cards, not just the sylvan
Duel links sylvan format was the best thing ever
Sylvan Komushroomo giving me horrific Duel Links PTSD
MBT, Game 1: "I hate Vanity's Emptiness!"
MBT, Game 2: "I love Vanity's Emptiness!"
can't wait for them to get to the
"mist of resolving, crowning with the pure green leaf, praise to their father, blessed by the water black night dark sky the devils cry" deck
in a couple of episodes
There is nothing more demoralizing than to lose your turn to emptiness
I honestly like vanities way more than summoning a full board of synchros xyz and whatever. Its also easier to out.
Vantues stop you from playing. At this point felgrand is the only extra deck monster that does anything on your turn
@@geiseric222 And MST solves the whole problem. And i know that most decks don't play much spell and trap removal. But this is only the case because it's rarely useful to have Spell and trap removal. A full Board of immunities and negates can prevent a player from playing the game, just like floodgates do.
And i prefer playing a longer game where i have the chance of drawing my outs compared to loosing all my life points in Turn 2.
But this is a preference thing. Let's not start a debate about whos playstile is more legit or something like that :D. I can totally see why other players love having constant access to toolbox extra decks witha nearly guaranteed Boss Monster on turn X.
@@Trashloot if just drawing the out is enough then just draw dark ruler no more, instantly outs any negate board. But doesn’t stop your opponent from playing.
Though I was talking about in this format where negates basically don’t exist
@@geiseric222 I know. Just wanted to bring negates in to the discussion because Vanities still does what it did back in this format. But you are right.
1:23 Ohhh, look at Gage’s adopted little brother.
I get time constraints and stuff but when you get to this point in yugiohs history you guys may want to consider playing out two matches, one where each of you gets to pick who goes first G1.
Just a thought.
This was the time I joined into yugioh. I loved lightsworn rulers. I miss them every day 😭
Baby cute aww
Cimoo and Ruxin would make a hot red headed baby though lol
It’s very rare for star eater to be good in a format, but when it can be made fairly easy it is a real fun card to use
Also both these decks are so sick, if this format didn’t have soul charge and vanity’s I feel like late HAT would be remembered much more fondly
Bring back auction series! Don’t know how , but need to see it
When you run into Bujins main decking Colosseum and Emptiness you will feel pain like never before.
Duelingbook does have a macro for excavating, type /mill followed by the number of cards
Man this format looked really fun to play, I still hte myself for stopping at Dragon Rulers format to play Cardfight Vanguard.
*I LOVE VANTIES EMPTINESS!*
*I LOVE BEING ABLE TO TURN OFF ALL MY OPPONENTS MOVES, WHILE ALSO BEING ABLE TO TURN IT OFF ON MY TURN*
Just for a nostalgic nod, you should have played RescuCatDuelist's 'Lovely Sylvans" build that turboed out Shooting Star Dragon.
0:47 Add a shitpost Ad? 1:28 now for the actual add
2:27 MBT's Deck: Lightsworn Dragon Rulers 5:48 Cimooo's deck: Sylvan
13:50 Game 1
21:00 Game 2
25:05 Game 3
Really enjoyable to se my first deck in action. Incredible the field cimo did With soul charge
Please never open an episode like this ever again. I don’t want to think about Cimo bottoming for Jospeh
That Gage roast was gold tho
Agreed, cimo would definitely top
@@yarielrobles9003 For sure. Joseph has been watching too much of that sissy hypno to be the daddy.
I knew it was an ad when I started but boy did I not know where it was going
I like to watch this series to see how old formats were, even if it was not the most fun. Emptiness was a big part of the game for a while, I think it's important to show us why
I have an inkling that MBT doesn’t like this format very much
Yeah if you've watched one of MBT's recent Twitch streams, he made it clear he was not a fan of all the episodes they already recorded for this entire format. I think he said he enjoyed the episodes after this format though.
I'm sad we didn't get to see any cool Orea combos with Fertilizer.
