    I'm still using one! 2540M, 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD. With a new 9-cell it still has killer battery life. This has just every nice feature ThinkPads should have (that newer ones are missing!) - keyboard, ThinkLight, audio buttons, solid tank-like build. Only wish it had a screen latch.

    Had this one for a few years. Usefull in school. But I used and abused it. I essentially used it as a desktop, running heavy programs like Maya and Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects. permantely VGAd into a double screen. I really wore it down. But it still mostly worked. I eventually had to buy a new labtop, I gave it to my mother who only used it for business which was mostly for typing. But then she borrowed it to my brother and he lost it in the subway... If I had it today I would probably be able to upraged or clean it to function properly.
    Still the best labtop I ever had, even when the hardware is outperformed, its deisgn and rugedness are prfect for productivity.

Just purchased a new battery 9 cell & charger, original 9 cell battery full capacity as of today was still 45% with around 1k recharge cycles in total.

    I have to say the thinkpad x220 is still awesome today even 22 years after its release, Mine runs unbuntu and windows 10 with no issues, I would even say it runs better than my 2018 Dell laptop which theoretically has a much more powerful CPU.. and the keyboard is probably the best keyboard I've ever typed on .. I really think keyboard technology has gone backwards since..

    • @dktol56
      @dktol56 Год назад +1

      @@skunkop Mostly useful for modern tasks. The x220 is stuck with a 720p IPS display - lots of lousy TN panels on the used market too - and the built-in speakers aren't great, but the youtube experience is acceptable. You can always add headphones or bluetooth speakers and an external 1080p display (via display port) for a better experience. Also, the Sandy Bridge Intel CPU's don't handle hardware decoding for videos, so all the processing is done in software, resulting in higher processor loads. In summary, if you can get an x220 at a low enough price and in good condition, it's a still plenty useful. That said, because of its age, the used market for the x220 is starting to dry up, so you might find better deals for the later x-series thinkpads while eliminating the above deficiencies. YMMV.

    Years ago i worked across the Pacific in remote locations. I was warned about the lack of IT support. I took an X220 with two boot drives (SSD and MSATA), each drive having two virtual machines, and 16Gb of RAM. A 64Gb Express card held a backup of important data files. It worked very very well.

    I picked up an off lease X220 some years ago for i think $300 CAD. 2nd Gen Core i5 2.5 GHz, 4 GB RAM and Win 8.1 It's in really good shape. I upgraded it to Win 10. I bought it for my son, who used it for a while and eventually lost the charger. In the last few months I replaced the charger (If you avoid video, the original battery will last 2.5-3 hours.)
    This machine's maximum RAM is 8GB, so I bought two new 4GB modules, and then cloned the hard drive to an SSD. I like Win 11 so I performed the hacks to install it LOL.
    With the increased RAM and an SSD it is quite a pleasure to use.

    Awesome video, thanks for sharing your experience and opinions on this ol machine!
    I myself own an x220 along with an X1 extreme and a few older ThinkPads.
    The x220 is a beautiful machine that in many aspects has aged very well!
    Considering price, features, upgradability and build quality I think it would be a solid purchase even at 300$ (albeit in good condition).
    I can guarantee from experience that even on the performance side of things this old ThinkPad is still good enough for basic tasks:
    Many of my peers are using 400$~ish brand new machines. From what I can see a lot of them have Celeron or pentium processors that are slower than the decade old i5 in the x220.
    The rest almost all have an i3 or a lower end AMD counterpart, with which the old i5 can generally still keep up.
    Not to mention, I would take an old ThinkPad over a Chromebook any day of the week!

    • @AICvideo

      they ONLY reason to get something newer is support for newer graphics support. I did a comparison of 4 gens of core i5 based x200 series laptops (x220, x250, x270, x280) and while the x280 out performed the rest due to it's 4 cores and 8 threads, the only real difference was in graphics. and I don't mean gaming. other applications like video editing, or any modeling software benefits from more recent graphics hardware. If you do not use that, then the difference between them disappears very quickly.

      No need to bash on Chromebooks! My every day use computers are a fully upgraded T440p, an X230T tablet, Google Pixelbook and an iPad mini 2019 with bluetooth keyboard case. A nice mix of old and new to use depending on what I need a Computer for and how big of one I want to carry. Most applications are in the browser these days, so you can do a lot with a Chromebook or even iPad these days.

    USB 3.0 is natively supported on the i7 version but can be added to i5 version as well via the express card slot. RAM - 16GB DDR3 is not that expensive. Also try to find an IPS screen version, its MUCH nicer. Has some image ghosting but otherwise no reason to choose the TN.

    • @Envinite
      @Envinite 2 года назад +1

      USB 3.0 through express card slot is a huge mistake. Takes too much energy even when nothing inserted, and also speed issues. Just buy the X230 if USB3 is a priority or even X230T since it only came in IPS screen.

    I Have the model type 7449 purchased in 2008, the X200 Tablet with docking station and pen for the notations etc, and the original released software on CD
    what an awesome machine, still in perfect condition. I did however install windows 10 on it with a 256GB SSD and works perfectly. but the battery is bad. I see the can still be purchased. I was about to throw it in the trash but thought maybe in time it may become a collectable item and I could make a profit as it was an expensive purchase in its day. I may still just hit it with a hammer and throw it in the trash some day, but I see there is a retro community. hopefully in another 10n years it will be something sough after otherwise I will just destroy it and throw it in the bin. I loved how it could swivel and fold itself onto the keyboard like a tablet before its time.

    Touch pad wouldn't matter for me. Occasionally I use it for copying files but most of the time %100 using a mouse with a laptop & a mouse pad on top of a book & a pillow or something. I'll likely play games on it but I'll stick to dsfix dark souls & less demanding titles. It'll most likely run Ultra Street Fighter 4 & Borderlands 2 just fine though my 08' laptop did, although that was a AMD chipset. I have played Dark Souls on a t420 it was enjoyable enough with dsfix tuned just right.
