- Hey Maria McKee fans! Maria will be playing May 8-13, 2015 at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, CA for the opening of her new film The Ocean of Helena Lee. Tickets available at Fandango. And the movie soundtrack is out now too!
Honestly still dumbfounded to this day 2019. That Maria never hit it big. She was the whole package people but that voice still 1 of the top female voices for me.
Amen !
Her record label screwed her over. Politics.

@@iggypopisgod9 The Van Bram interview 'Maria on the demise of her band'.
Look at how she was dressed? You have to remember this was an '80s when Madonna was strutting around half naked. Sex sold at that time!
Maria McKee blew me away when I first saw Lone Justice perform on Saturday Night Live. She is truly one of the world's most intriguing performers and songwriters of all time. Love you girl.
Same here, i remember writing the name down and going to Musicland for the album 😂 those goldilocks and that sassy way of strumming was appealing, but her voice sealed the deal.
Almost brings a tear to a grown man in remembrance of the magical time of the 80s.
Almost? Speak for yourself....
You got that right! The passion she has while singing,.......insanely good!
Yep.
Saw them for the first time on SNL ,then the special from the Ritz. I knew then that she was special ,and that someday I’d marry her. 40ish years one, not sure which i love more - her talent, or just how damn sexy she is... but still 100% sure we’ll marry someday....
Such an enchanting woman and omg what a band
Lone Justice was way ahead of it's time. I bet Shelter would be a big "New Country" hit if it were released today.
Yep. Wrong vibe, wrong time, unfortunately. I was freaking nuts about this album in my final year at university but only a couple of people seemed to get it.
Weirdly, five years later Texas hit it pretty big across the U.K. and Europe doing pretty much the same kind of thing.
not for gloating but appreciation, adoration and sheer gratitude.. by chance I was in that audience, 15yrs young. and to this day it's one of the most memorable live shows I've ever been to. Her energy was electrifying and left a powerful imprint...
Wow very lucky!!!!! man wish I was there! My uncle saw them live when he was young! Said they were great!
probably the most underrated vocalist.
Underrated lyricist just as much. These live recordings are great because they capture her energy and give you a glimpse of what the recordings could have been without the music industry morons. Wonderfully talented woman.
Maria was so talented. What a shame she never got big.
I saw them when they opened up for U2 back around 1984-85,awesome opening act!
@@777pusher Just learned about her today from a RUclipsr commenter comparing her to Linda Ronstadt. Found out that Linda Ronstadt had advocated for her getting on the Geffen label. She may not have become as big as Ms. Ronstadt, but hopefully like her, all she ever wanted was to make a living making great music on her own terms. She is fantastic and earned a fan today.
@@KiRiMa64 Likewise for me. Heard Lone Justice open for U2 in Hartford, CT in May 1985 and have loved this song ever since.
This woman should be a billionaire. Her voice.
Her voice is awful....sounds like an old pub singer !
Is awful. Who on earth told her she could sing. No thank you.
She's the mystery voice in Dwight Yoakam's Bury Me along the Big Sandy. For what that's worth.
What a beautiful feeling it must be to experience the ability to create a piece of music and then perform it in front of a world of people who love it to no end. Thank you Maria McKee for singing such a wonderfully beautiful piece of music. Will never stop loving this song. ❤
Of all the bands that I have seen/heard perform, and those that I missed, one of my greatest regrets is that I never got to see Lone Justice live.
To this day, from then, one of my favorite albums (re cords 🙂) is still "Shelter". - Song writing, production of recording, arrangements, performances, vocal power and truth - everything that great songs, song writing and performance are all right there.
From all the videos and TV performances that I have seen, it's quite obvious that I missed out on something special.
They did this number and I Found Love on SNL, both of which captured the best of McKee and the band. I was a fan from that point on.
2023 - trippin' back in time. I THRILLED to Lone Justice in the 1980's. Maria McKee was one of my favorites - freakin' awesome voice!!
I simply adore this song so much.......Takes me back to sun-filled days of my misspent youth.....with the very first love of my life....
i have certainly always loved this song, BUT this has to be the BEST version ever!!!!!
Epic performance by all concerned. This live version sounds way better than the studio recording imho. Maria's superb needy vocals, that bass guitar, just wow.
Saw them open for U2 at the Nassau Coliseum in 1984? Big sound. Her voice....amazing.
Could it have been ‘87? That’s when I saw them open for U2’s Joshua Tree tour.
@@adamsasso1Lone Justice also opened many shows on the 84/85 Unforgettable Fire Tour.
Was in a band in the 80s and I did this song. Loved this song!!
I cannot believe this band wasn't on my radar when I was a teenager. Being a child of the 80's but only discovering Lone Justice now makes me feel like I wasted the last 30 years of my life. God, I miss the 80's and the musical talent from that decade. Viva La 80's!
At the time I had no clue how lucky I was to see Lone Justice live at IU in 86 for $5 at a music room that held 500 people. John Mellencamp came out and sang with the band at the end of their set. Never thought they would be gone a year later. Still one of my best concert experiences I’ve ever had.
Very nice. The 80s sort of ended up burying a lot of talent because of how the artist would need to be marketed. Too bad this gal never got back in the saddle with another band in the 1990s. Would have appeared to have been a perfect fit for that era. Petty got them a lot of exposure back in '86 on the Southern Accents tour as well.
There was no one from the original band left towards the end of this. It was basically Maria carrying on the name, which she decided to stop doing.
Here in 2018. One of the most beloved songs of my life. Wherever you are Maria McKee, I thank you for your contribution to humanity!
That's my first cousin on bass, and since I never got to see him live,I'm grateful for the videos.Thank you RUclips!
Gregg was the best.
@@jasonedwards1Your comment is much appreciated.Gregg was a wonderful man.We all miss him.
What has happened to Maria Mckee?
Great song
The bass on the whole album was exceptional; I hope you are proud of what he did, from a big fan of his work.
Never underestimate the inner world of a 12 year old. This was my fave song then. Still never tire of hearing it.
I had 17 when this song was released, and now I can`t leave to listen it
I was 14 when “Shelter” was released…I still play it on repeat!!🤎🎶🤎🎶
Terrific lp and band. Maria is an incredible singer. I still own the lp
AWESOME, BEAUTIFUL SONG,
back in the 80's, and even now.
This is the best video of it too!
What other female voice these days can compare with Maria McKee?
(none!)
Saw Lone Justice live when they opened for U2, during the Joshua Tree tour! It was at the summit in Houston! One of the best shows ever!
Maria sounds as great today as she did back in the 80's. An incredible talent.
She's just such a great performer. What a voice plus the passion plus the delivery plus the conviction.
Absolutely the best version of this song. They were clicking on all 8 during this performance.
Put the headphones on and listen to the bass line. Amazing. Great song by Steve Van Zandt. Maria on point as usual.
I remember being given a tape to this album around 1988. And loved Shelter but Reflected is what blew me away. I was listening to nothing but Springsteen at the time and until the other day didn’t realise that Maria McKee was heavily influenced by him. Nor was I aware of the Miami Steve connection. The Bruce influence is now obvious. What a singer she is, as well as being rather sexy!!
Such an amazing and powerful songwriter, and what a beautiful voice.
The greatest band of the '80's to never make the big time !
One of best bands of the eighties. I bought both of their albums back in the day and again years later when they were released on CD.
I love this song!--awesome lyrics and this live performance is phenomenal!
I'm 64 years old and just found out about Lone Justice from the old Saturday Night Live episode. Absolutely love the song Shelter! Maria McKee has a powerhouse of a voice. Reminds me of Cyndi Lauper. What a shame the band didn't make it. A fabulous group!
That was a great performance on SNL. This is the same line-up from that night, but not the original band members from the first album. The original line-up was great, much better than this one.
ive long thought maria was the most underrated musician, singer and writer ever. pure talent just leaked out of every pore. the best female voice. I saw her at a little club in five points Atlanta and she just blew the top of the joint.
t mac now shit I think it was Atlanta I saw her. it was thirty years ago and I smoked a lot of weed and I cant remember where I saw her. fuck it.
+Joshua Kudilil I think there is a Cyndi Lauper similarity...both great
Unlike McKee, Lauper rocked a leopard print tank or corset top.
Lovely song written by Steven Van Zandt / Maria Louisa Mckee. ❤❤
Ah, Maria Louisa. Haven’t seen her middle name in a long time. Isn’t she wonderful?
One of the best live performers of all time.
Saw them support Lou Reed and U2 in the 80’s😳!!! My dream performance would be Maria, Hope(Mazzy Star), Annie Lenox and Debbie Harry on stage together!!
I have seen the broadcast at "Bayerischer Rundfunk" (Live aus dem Alabama). The next day I bought the LP (still one of my favs).
Produced and some songs are written by the legendary Little Steven (van Zandt).
It is a shame such an underrated band.
Great song when I first found it. This Vid is the best version.
One of the all time great songs.
Saw them open up for U2 maple leaf gardens. Unforgettable fire tour. I do remember this song and bono stopping the show because 2 guys were fighting over an Irish flag he throw into the audience. Said he didn’t want them fighting over a flag.
It is totally baffling that Maria and Lone Justice never hit the big time! I know Maria had some success as a solo artist but Lone Justice never reallly had the chance to hit it big time! Such great talents and Maria whose beauty and voice was just amazing!!!
this album got me through my first serious bout of depression
It got me through my coming out period. :)
Gorgeous, beautiful 1980's voice from GA
Have always, always LOVED shelter. Man, they are the real deal. So talented. I'd like to see one band like this in 2014 and a one woman be able to sing the flowers out of the ground like McKee. I also LOVE the guitar work!!!
They opened for U2 in Ottawa 🇨🇦 back in the '80s and I was BLOWN AWAY!! Especially by their performance of this song!!!! Sophie B. Hawkins's doppelganger...or vice versa, lol!
I just discovered that I saw them open for U2 in 1987. Unfortunately, I have no recollection of them!
This is the best version!
Awesome song! One of my all-time favorites of the 80s or any decade! How this band didn't become more famous I'll never know!
GODS BEAUTIFUL CREATURE ~ !!!!
Yes! She is still "out there". She still performs where others dream of going!
❤ Never heard of this band but this lady is tallented with a great voice
great song great singer and a very good heart
Loved this song from the first time I saw them on SNL.
They are all so beautiful. Maria has a beautiful voice
Maria McKee and Sass Jordan...two great voices of their genre...and of course we cannot overlook Ann Wilson. These women simply touch my soul when they sing.
All of 80's chicks knew how to sing, Pat Benatar, Amanda Myles, Jane Child, Kim Wilde, Belinda Carlisle, and they looked damn hot too, unlike today's bitches who only look hot, but can't sing for shit
Lone Justice were fantastic, got this on record when it came out (and their debut). Played them to death and they still sound awesome.
Great post and they were brilliant
I loved them from the get go!!
Friggin love!!!!! Amazing band!
God her voice gives me chills
have always loved this song and the singer from the first time I heard her sing it. This is one of those great songs to listen to.
still sounds great 30 odd years later........this is the good old music to sit back with a cold one with friends and chillax
...they opened up for Hall and Oates in Philly back in 1985, I had just bought their debut album and LOVED every track on it...but, hearing her live??....OMFG!!...I thought I died and went to heaven!!...BEYOND AWESOME!!...still a big huge fan of Miss McKee!!!...
I saw her with her back pack on at Venice Beach on the boardwalk. 1987.
Maria McKee great voice
Fantastic performance. Power and passion. The vocals blend in well together and Maria's so charismatic. With that outfit she could even have played the starring role in a Kate Winslet movie.
Amazing memories of living in Dallas a few years after college…..
Love this song, she really is a beautiful singer, and knew how to do it, (Lone Justice)
Great song from the 80's! Thanks for posting. :)
Epic, just love the power and emotion!
Just a greatly crafted song.
Kudos
The horsepower in her voice. Wow.
Joshua--Ditto here, just turned 66 in December and saw/heard this group sing "Shelter" for the first time a few minutes ago on VH-1 channel replay of William Shatner Saturday Night Live episode from 12/20/1986. Don't know how I missed it some 28 years ago since I was into country music, but glad I caught it tonight. Liked it so much decided to go on youtube to find copy of a performance so I could enjoy again. Sad the lead female singer broke the group up by going single less than 2 years after song came out.
Gary Bosco Me Too! Im 61 and watched it on SNL and found it on youtube...love this song!!!
There's more to the story than that, including a music biz that ground them up.
I was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii and somehow ended up in Northern Idaho for college in '81. This was the song that me through '82...
don't know how I missed this group, soft and rough at the same time
One of the very best concerts in all of MTV history, right there, Maria, McKee, and loan Justice with sheltered. She is stunning, and what a beautiful voice.👀💜🗽🇺🇸
...great song, great vocals. Just played it yesterday from my IPod.
thanks for all the postings, saw lone justice at the marquee years ago but it is still fresh in my mind, what a gig, what a band !
What a great voice of the country-punk-rock scene. Back To the hillbilly source. Coolest band of R'N'R. Ive seen the and Maria solo fourth times in Paris. Amazing grace. Inforgattable !
Great voice, but damn I love the bassline in this song.
Great group, one of the lesser known '80s bands.
and its a shame....
80’s will never be touched, based on today’s crap!! Was blessed to have this in my prime!
so much energy...
Nobody better than Sweet Maria!!!!
I saw this version of Lone Justice in a basement bar in Long Beach, Ca in, I think 86. Ten-foot ceiling and maybe a hundred people in the place. Shane Fontayne was on fire and his look was amazing. I have to coop to a bit of a man crush. The encore was Sweet Jane.
a good heart always shine through
the darkness
Maria should be awarded the title of God Mother of rock and roll as Maria is the only musician in rock history that deserves the title because she has had a raw deal as a musician and is the rightful owner to such a title over all the amazing female musicians in the the history of planet Earth.
Was and is a great favourite I always imagine it's about a great love, the best of women Guinevere
Still sounds magnificent - Lone Justice a fantastic band
Seeing her next week
Can't wait
Maria is a wonder
I've been a fan of Maria forever and she kind of drifted out of my mind for many years as my heart's taste for music evolved and changed. She could have easily been the front woman for many bands including Fleetwood Mac. Amazing voice. This performance is phenomenal.
She is a goddess!
I know this song from way back. Never seen them perform it. Very nice job. Enjoyed it
excellent now gone looking for Maria McKee ...
Hey Selina. Another fantastic post. Thanks. Seen many clips, but reckon this captures Maria's passion and essence live, best of all. Get's me right deep down, in my soul. Having said that, the Precious Time clip, on Later with Jools, will take some beating. Could watch that on repeat.....
Always such good music and vocals!
Goosebumps
I can honestly say that I never heard of "Lone Justice", & I grew up in the '80s.
Sam Bradley - shame! Enjoy now and forever!!
genre defying haunting lyrics and melody a creative force unlike few other kudos Maria
And it was such a cool name for a band.
An exceptionally talented artist who never really got off the ground because of the way young talent is handled by the managers, promoters and producers in the music industry. IMHO Shelter was Maria's best work. Live versions are by far better than the recorded version. .... Thank you Selina for sharing ... Nearly 30 years and this song still warms my heart :)
+Knot Tellinya record failed to capture the magic in her voice
Mismanaged like Concrete Blonde!! Maria and Johnette are TOP vocalists, and the bands surrounding them were high quality!!
I know there wasn't any "youtube" back then, so had to have seen this video and the "I found love" video on MTV. I remember being so impressed with her energy and voice that I went out and bought the record. No CD's, no streaming, no internet, not even cell phones except for maybe the extremely rich at that time. Why did times seem so much more simple then? Regardless, I played this record over and over and over and loved it so much. I wish I could have seen this band live, but great memories just to see this video again. Thanks for posting.
loving this version and those eyebrows!!
