Super basic hack and slash tbh. The game would have been better off without it.
Not to mention you gotta get the hidden moon and sun medals so you can actually beat the game, making every werehog level take like 30 minutes each. Otherwise you gotta play the same werehog levels again and burn more time

If they gave an option to turn the battle theme off, rewarded creativity so you do not spam the same attacks(sort of like the combo ranks in DMC), and the enemies had more health to actually pull off longer intricate combos, Werehog would be perfect.

Hello, ini of Cooliniau here (also one of the people working on 'Foreign Input System' for Sonic Unleashed) !!
This is a pretty great video that goes into some of what makes the Werehog's combat great for the fans that enjoy it...
...and personally, I think it's good to go even deeper into the details of that (along with your point on supposedly "no replayability") !!
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
So, Score Play as the Werehog.
We're well aware that Sonic the Hedgehog's style has it, but not many I've seen understand that this is what makes Sonic the Werehog's playstyle more "Sonic" than they think!
Combat and Time are, imo, 2 of the most important factors to Score Play in terms of priority.
    ~ For Time:
6 of the 8 Night Stages provide rather big Time Bonuses, so contrary to what some may think, Time does in fact matter in the Night Stages. So, that means cutting down on dawdling in the Stages and wasted/whiffed combos in combat from a previous run aid more than they hurt for higher Ranks. Knowing how to make use of Ledge Grab Jump and even certain combos for platforming will be beneficial.
    ~ For Combat:
To put it simply-know how certain systems work together. Level of Strength, combos, default enemy Score, the Hit Counter, and QTEs all work together.
Low-level Strength & more combos (check the Skills menu in Pause for those!) >> higher Hits >> higher Hit Counter Bonus Score & Unleash Meter. Making use of Shield Cancel during combat (press LB during an attack) provides quick defense and cancellation of most attack's end frames, so don't be shy to make use of it.
Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to QTE everything for the S-Rank-playing SMART imo means knowing which enemies are worth more and only spending time on QTE'ing some of those while also having a high Hit Counter to boot, which your combos & Level of Strength (Levels 3 to 4 max, perhaps) can easily help with. You would only need to QTE more if your Strength is high, meaning...
Low Strength = more Hit Counter rewards in exchange for busted damage output, while high Strength is the opposite-so mind the trade-off here when you're committing EXP to either this or Combat. Grab Attacks are helpful on low-Strength builds, since they can still provide a sizeable amount of damage for ending off fights whenever you wish to.
The Ranking System for the Werehog itself also contains 2 statistics for combat-related Score Points:
    Enemy, and Combo.
Enemy is the combination of regular Kill Points, Hit Counter Bonus Points, and Critical Attack QTE Points.
Combo is simply the total of all Hit Counter Bonus Points gained thru-out a Night Stage.
*So*, the Strength Stat once again plays a bigger role than some may think, since it can also affect how much Score Points you could really build up for TWO Ranking System statistics!
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
All of this is to simply say that the Werehog contains a good amount of the core Sonic principles that some may believe.
Those, from my POV, simply being the mastery of the player character's skillset in an environment that calls for practice & analysis.
This can apply to both most Sonic games prior to Sonic Unleashed, as well as Sonic Unleashed itself for both playstyles.
With all that out there, it's pretty clear where the replayability aspect mostly lies in terms of the Werehog-which is why I easily disagree with the notion of there being "no replayability".
The type that you mentioned in the video is simply *one* means of integrating replayability into a playstyle, which the Werehog actually has in regard to some Night Stages (i.e. Mazuri and Chun-nan) for example. The Werehog's playstyle mainly prioritizing the use of hindsight, curiosity in re-runs w/ upgrades, and time optimization/score improvement as its main means of replayability is EXTREMELY reminiscent of Devil May Cry-even outside of DMC, it's more than a valid means of replayability alongside built-in stage shortcuts/alternative paths. So, Sonic Unleashed contains *2* means of replayability within itself !!
That's pretty much all I'll get into here, and I also recommend checking out Foreign Input System sometime as well-the trailers that show what it's all about is up on my channel, which I feel you could be interested in trying it out & talking about it sometime. I'd also say Foreign Input System provides one means of which combat can be elevated imo !! - ini

Definitely the most refined and well visualized. The Fighters and Battle are incredibly fun but have, like, actually game changing OP moves you can learn pretty fast and pretty easily and cheese the whole experience. 06 Shadow's combat is fun but simplistic to the point where it's an understatement to even call it that. Similar thoughts for Black Knight's swordfighting, it's simple, it's fun. Frontiers' combat is excellent but there isn't much of it and much use for it, combat is a very situational scenario and a pretty uncommon one (unless you purposefully seek it out). Unleashed combat isn't just incredibly fun, it's not just incredibly flashy, it's incredibly envisioned. Tons and tons of moves, an extensive upgrade tree (in contrast to all the rest), stealth, combo meters, takedowns, actual challenge, fluid and beautiful animation work, power ups, unique context and premise for its existence. Going for 100% makes Unleashed the most repetitive combat by far but yeah, I'd still choose it.
The ones who hate the Werehog are usually the ones that decided to hate it as soon as the concept was introduced, which is devoid of any credibility.

I'd still say the Battle, the Werehog and Frontiers provide a better offering in combat tho.

It's very good combat, one of the best for sure. I didn't play Black Knight, but for the rest I can say that only Heroes' combat is better. It doesn't have combos and it doesn't need to.
Instead, it has 3 characters that you can swap anytime, and you have to decide which character you want to beat not just because of the situation, but also because you always get a level up for a character you did NOT use to beat an enemy.
It fits perfectly in the Sonic formula, not slowing down the pacing, and if you're level 3 you can just ignore it if you want.

  • @snakey888
    @snakey888 23 дня назад +6

To be fair, just because other Sonic titles had deviating, polarising, non-Sonic gameplay, does not make the werehog more fitting or acceptable. There's a reason why all of those games are highly controversial at best.
As for the combat, honestly, the Mega drive Sonic games had better combat, it was fast and fluid in those games and mixed platforming, momentum and speed seamlessly. The werehog combat is definitely most complex, but that does not equal best.
EDIT: I will admit that as a standalone gameplay style, the werehog is pretty good, nothing amazing, but fairly fun and enjoyable. Certainly the most developed and fleshed out of the non-Sonic gameplay the series have seen throughout the years in main series games.

It ages better as time goes on.
Werehog gameplay, self contained, is GOOD.
For a Sonic game though? I simply don’t think it belongs in the way it does. I just don’t think a slow, methodical approach for Sonic specifically is correct. He’s supposed to be fast, keep it as such.
If the Werehog wasn’t tied to Sonic specifically, I would be more than okay with it, I’d LOVE it! The combat system is incredible and encourages growing skill. It’s just too slow and typically too long for a Sonic game in my opinion.
And remember, this is my opinion. I personally think Sonic stages should last 5-8 minutes, give or take. The only short stages that really get a pass are the incredibly complex stages that have lots of paths with different rewards for your skill and embracing your adventurous and curious side.
Anyways, I still think Unleashed is a great game. More than simply Good.

My main issue with unleashed isn't the werehog sure it can be annoying sometimes you blitz trought a day stage in 2 or 3 minutes then you have to play 20+ minutes of it but we came here to play sonic. You know? The blue hedgie that goes fast? Anyway the main issue is progression system with medals i still didn't completed the game because i dont want to grind for 5-10 medals i missed during different werehog stages that goes over idk how much. The game would be better if werehog stages had shorter times and medals were optional. As for your times i don't care about speedrunners times if it takes to beat it over 20 minutes on average casual player its still long
I might return unleashed someday but not for the werehog.
I remember i would get really happy after completing a night stage "Finally i can play real sonic now"
Its fine to have a break from the main playstyle but break should not take more time from the real thing.
Its like baking a cake but putting a truck load of sugar and a little amount of essentials
To sum up werehog fine but it takes painfully long time to finish, fuck progression with collectibles, sonic day stages rocks!

The only reason to why I just can't like the Werehog is because when I play a Sonic game I want to play a Sonic game, so when I replay a Sonic game I completely disregard the other gameplay styles and just play the Sonic part, because I play Sonic for the high speed platforming, not for a stupid God of War ripoff.
If I wanted to play a character action game then I'd just play a Bayonetta game or a DMC game. And if I wanted to play a character action game mixed with high speed platforming, then I'd just play Spark the Electric Jester 1 or 3.
That's the reason to why I like Colors so much, it's just a Sonic game, not anything intrusive to get in the way of a quality action platformer game.

Rush got better lvl designs than the classic, it got the trick system, and a lot of bottom less pits so we can’t count that the advance games it got multiple playable characters like Amy and cream that don’t work like the classic characters the lvl is better…..well at least advance 3

I think Frontiers is better, it's just held back from questionable design choices, even in the context of its own systems (infinite parry window and shotty enemy telegraphs come to my mind)
Compared to the Werehog that only feels good because you had games like 05 God Of War as its blueprint. IE, it's good not because of Sonic Teams skill as an actual developer, but rather their ability to copy the other guys excellently done homework but changing the answers so it can appear original, despite the fact it really isn't when you actually look at them beyond the surface level
