I dealt with story theft in a creative writing class a while back, so I completely understand not wanting to share details at this stage. I usually only tell my friends silly, pointless stuff about my work, like what my protagonist's favorite color is, or how they take their coffee.

I feel you on the story stealing paranoia. I used to post some of my original stories and drafts and stuff online to get some feedback and there has been a few times that I've found someone has literally copy and pasted it and told people they'd wrote it themselves. It's disheartening when someone takes something you worked so hard on or were super excited about writing.
AHHHHH Kat, I've been listening to Marianas Trench while writing too!!! Lately, I've been listening to their entire discography on repeat while writing, or just listening to Ever After straight through because it's such an amazing concept album. I love them so much

I agree with the idea theft paranoia. That's why I rarely put on real titles and make pretty generic story synopsis on the site.
I literally just finished listening to Haven't Had Enough before I clicked on this video!
It sucks that someone did this but knowing that the person went ahead and told you about it sounds like he/she thought it would be a homage to you or something. That person don't know writers, we tend to be overprotectives about our ideas most of all when it is not quite finished yet.
Now happy things: your plot sounds like spy stuff, sabotage of a study group, kidnapping, crush turned into enemy. It amazes me that are no RomCom movies with a plot like this, that has the potential to be so funny and overall amazing.

I just wanted to comment and say that I love your nanowrimo vlogs, I'm even going back and watching all of your old ones for the first time. I've never participated in nanowrimo before but your vidoes make me think it would be a good idea to try (when it really wouldnt)

yeah i totally get not wanting to share your story, im doing that this year too. Whenever i try to share my stories with my family while im outlining them they always think its an invitation to give all kinds of critique and its like thats good but.... didnt really ask for it rn. Also i always feel like when i tell people my plot it sorta cements it into place and i dont feel as open to change anymore. idk but thats just me. At least i dont have to deal with people possibling stealing my stories that sucks.
Im actually writing a contemp romcom too!! it sounds like yours is a lot different but dang romcoms are fun!! i wish you luck and lots of words!!!! :))

You shouldn't let those negative crtics get to you! The are just jealous because they don't have your awesome ideas. I know how it is when people just seem to mock your hard work and they drag you down and you actually start to believe them, you should do what YOU think is best for your story! All the best for NaNoWriMo (hopefully I will be able to make it this year, lol) :D

You are right not to share your synopsis with the world, Kat. I've been planning my NaNoWriMo novel since July and I even wrote around 15k words beforehand. Of course, I shared all that with my best friend. Then, a week or so after I've started writing and outlining, this friend of mine comes and announces she has an idea of her own to write down. (something she has never been interested in and frankly, is not that good at.) The similarities between our stories are just too many for it to be a coincidence. Also, almost every time I make a change, she does too.
So, she's not a good friend. Everybody knows that this is the typical thing that can pisses a writer off... You should talk to her.
I suggest you read Afterworlds by Scott Westerfield and while what your friend did isnt okay, it isnt always preventable.
Ana Paula Seixlack I know she is not a good friend. And believe me I've tried talking to her and she gets super mad, but then comes back apologising. The only solution is to stop being friends with her.
Emily Hawkins I have had Afterworlds on my TBR for ages now and really should start it soon.
so I'm pretty sure your writing is amazing and I think it's horrible horrible thing if someone steals your ideas! I have trouble coming up with ideas, but writing should be something you do and complete by yourself, and come up with an idea somehow by yourself. I do look at peoples videos to see what they're writing about, but I would never steal their idea, I just like seeing what people write about or come up with. or to see if my idea I think is new and exciting has actually already been done lol But if you got a book published some people would be horrible about it that just the way it goes. I love, love love your videos so much and look forward to watching them can't wait to watch more soon!

I find it impossible to listen to songs with lyrics in them while I'm writing. But somehow I've developed an obsession with movie scores and so I've been listening to; How To Train Your Dragon 2, New Moon, Harry Potter, and Pirates of the Caribbean... I know, I'm a dork.
Oh wow, that must be quite upsetting to hear someone taking your idea. For me, ideas are always the hardest because there are so many possibilities and I'm a very indecisive person. A lot of effort goes into finding the perfect novel idea for me. That being said, I can completely understand and respect your decision not to completely share your ideas with us this year :) Good luck with nano! (I should probably get off of RUclips now and write, I am so behind haha).

HAHAHAHA...the synopsis sounds awesome! I literally wrote something similar to your plight of sharing plot information. It's his plot and his story that he wants to nurture and grow before others form an opinion. I decided to have on of my characters do NaNo because I hit a stump (Yeah...didnt outline...whoops). I wish I could write to music, but I get distracted. :(
I don't like sharing to much of my story either because SPOILERS! And that was the best synopsis ever! If you publish it then you should put that on the back. I would definitely pick that up!

It sucks that you have to deal with that kind of anxiety. Personally, that has been lingering in the back of my head for a while which is why I stopped writing on public sites like Movellas or Wattpad. I have thought about it so much so that I even have loose and vague story idea about it XD Like that movie with Frankie Muniz, Amanda Bynes, and Paul Giamatti...
I actually stopped sharing my ideas with people, or at least going into detail with them (even with my writing group), because I find that it drains my excitement. I share my passages once they're written, but my group doesn't get any ideas about what's coming until it's on paper and they can read it for themselves.

Another piece of great advise from Kat to other writers: don't share specific details. If someone's really insistent just give them your elevator pitch.

I think it's totally okay to keep it a secret. In fact, I don't blame you! Why would someone take your idea? Why? Why? Why? I'm keeping mine somewhat on the downlow. I'll tell some people when they ask and I have a very short synopsis on the NaNoWriMo site. Beyond that, I'm not advertising it on my blog or anything. It's a story that's pretty private and personal and I don't want to share it with people until I'm comfortable.
