If my budget was so tight I'd opt for the cheap PSU and spent more on the antenna. Then again I'd go for a QRP rig with external battery but that just my preference.
Hi Jonathan, would love to see a video in which you cover antena wire in more detail - what to look for, where to buy, what kind, including from non ham stores i.e. equipment wire. Cheers!
Nice one Jonathan. I purchased a second hand Yaesu FT-891 for just £425 via a facebook group a few months back, what a bargain, perfect rig for a noob as it can be used in the shack and mobile/portable.
My first hf rig was a yaesu ft 840 great way into hobby £350 buys a good one , psu brand new say £90 , fan dipole and some rg58 this is hf after all easily made £60 job done 👍
A lot of second hand equipment is now getting to expensive when you consider its age and possible usable life it has left, and then can it be repaired. When you compare it to the price of newer sdr features a new radio has now.
Easy though not 100w (but you don't need that to work the world.). A brand new Xiegu G90 ~£400. A power supply for this radio can be less than £20. Make your own 49:1 transformer and a 20 metre long wire, total about £10 and a windsock pole for at most £50. leaving £20 if not a bit more for coax.
I take your point, however I would much rather go for the TS-570D than the G90. I don’t know why, but I can’t get excited over the range from Xiegu. I know many people are really happy with them, but my (admittedly limited) experience left me a little underwhelmed.
I don’t really assume anything. However I think a lot of videos exist on RUclips on how to fit a PL259. Buying premade cables are always going to cost more than the parts and to do it yourself.
At long last a RUclips ham without a million pound budget

The Kenwood TS-570D is a lovely radio, my first HF radio and I'm very happy with it. Great video Jonathan. 73, Matt 2E0LNS

Thanks Stu!
I had no idea you’d done this video 😂
So that’s two of us who’ve proved it’s possible. 😊
No such thing as an original idea!
Of course you did better by including the desk and chair in your budget!
@@M0JSX and a computer and two monitors ahem 😂😂😂
Enjoyable video Jonathan, a good fun format 👍
Great work Jonathan,id have gone the uk antennas route as well but for under £500 you did great 👍

Hi Jonathan, very informative video for those just getting into the hobby...a good job well done i'd say!
Postage is also going to make a dent in that budget

Jonathan, for someone new, are you assuming help from a club?
I am a retired electrical engineer, and I prefer buying a finished coax to building one.

Second hand G90 would be a great transciver 😊
It would, but fails on the 100W output power I had set my sights on. 73!
@@M0JSXfair enough 😅,I’m a 2E0 so I look at things with that as my starting point 😊

Icom 706 mk1, i got one a few months ago for £300
Yep, I've got two of them, £350 for one, £250 for another! Mind you, I bought an FT-991 for £615, and then another one for £500!
I've also got two ic706. Last one £250 like new hamzilla rally earlier this year. My first one is deaf on 2 mtr
