    My wife and I stood for 10 hours freezing in the cold rain 150 meters from the finish in Nantes, right where Lance pumped his fist before the finish line, knowing he just won the TdF. There was a French woman who stood next to us for the 10, cold, rainy hours, as soon as Richard Virenque finished a couple guys before Lance, she left and did not wait another 10 minutes to watch Jan or Lance finish.... LOL: the French loved Virenque.

    I was in a school in school back then ( India). Lance Armstrong photo crossing the finishing line in the yellow shirt, spreading his arm out - was spread across the entire first page. The whole sports section talked about him..
    And years (about 16-18) later I search about Lance Armstrong. This guy is still inspiring. Good person bad person don't care. A fierce competitor, the never say die attitude. He is now more inspiring than ever before. He is A man nuked thousand times over by the world and still stands straight. If that's not a character, I don't know what is.

      I would bet that Lance in the production meeting made it clear no mention of Tyler. smh. Thats unfortunate, clearly lance still holds a grudge. I thought he had spoken to all the people he wronged over the years and apologized. I watched this tour live, and have read all their books- lance, johan, george, and tyler... Tyler clearly was the one who slowed the peloton down, and lance even thanked him that day after watching the replay (according to tyler) for being a "class act". smh

    Quite fascinating re-visit. Watching these classic TDF stages, with the great commentary is very interesting. Now, how about considering this, maybe discuss some of that era's Peloton etiquette, the style, the class, the patron role etc. Probably much of which is no longer part of contemporary road racing, but most certainly a part of road racing back then. Keep these coming, all great stuff. Oh yeah, that kid who caused the crash, maybe you can locate him, and have him on the show...

    God bless the guy, but Lance has an ego the size of Manhattan . The friendly digs at George and his tendency to cut him off mid-sentence is an obvious reminder that LA is the boss. This shit is fascinating to watch. Meanwhile, poor ol' JB might as well be wondering about laundry and what he's going to have for dinner. Johan is the only guy that Lance seems to truly respect. He gets to have his say without interruption and seems to be the only guy Lance goes to with sincere questions. I am far from a fan of Armstrong, but good for him to keep on truckin'. He is a marvel, that is for sure.

    The commentary with Phil Ligget and the late great Paul Sherwen at the time, which I'm not sure was live, , Phil said right before Lance's crash, "Armstrong is waiting for someone to pull in the flag", two seconds later, musette being waved gets caught in the handlebars!
    I think Jan was coming back to Lance's first attack on Luz Ardiden, and without the adreneline of the crash, Lance would not have dropped Jan, as Jan was winning the psychological battle, Jan would have kept the margin tight enough, to take the Jersey in the timecyrial and into Paris. Watch the video again, Jan was coming back, and actually got back with Mayo.
    Without wanting to indulge in wild fantasies, in the same sense of mentioning the red painted "Anger is a gift" slogan on the cabin on the climb, I've wondered imaginatively, that the supreme power wanted your story told, to prove that man made over indulgence of power money and fame, is often a poisened challice. You needed the crash to win that tour, you were on the ropes and goin down.
    Jan was pure class, and that year deserved to win the tour I think. He had his weight down that year and that made all the difference.
    I'm really surprised, that you Lance, never used the example of the conditions of the Tour in the early 1900's, when tour stages were 350 kms long, the alpes and pyrenean roads made of stoney gravel, the bikes made from steel and Iron, when the riders of the tour drank alcohol to numb the pain of what was simply an inhumane almost sadistic experiment, that's when drug taking started.
    I think your comments on Sastre were very unfair. Sastre was a very consistent talented climber, who basically saw an opportunity to ambush his own teams position. Sastre realised years before his win, if you wait in the grass until the last moment, having not lost any major time, it was possible to win the tour. Sastre was around a long time, very consistent, had a lot of class on the bike, and very tactical. Sastre deserved that win.

    • @tmelendezmia
      @tmelendezmia 4 года назад

      Yes!, in 2003 , the OLN (Outdoir Life Network,, today NBCSN) feed was already live; trust me, I would calculate times and distances and would wake up accordingly because some of the long mountain stages would have a 6-ish start here in the states, and there was no need for me to be up to watch the 'breakaways. A lot of times, that earlier part of the race wouldn't be shown live, and they would just do a one minute recap and then go live. I would just remain in bed until Phil & Paul got excited and upped their volume. It was funny cuz Phil would say things sometimes and it was like "huh". But then you'll watch the re broadcast and he would be right. Someone did have a flag that on the camera angle looked like it was in front of Lance's bike shortly before he got tangled in the mussette.
      A funny thing watching this stage today, Sylvain Chavanel was leading; my first and only tour live was in 2018, and the peloton allowed the Frenchman in his last year to lead them into Paris; and he was my first live view of this thing Ive been watching for years.
      A funnier thing about the show today; Lance pointing out that he couldn't find Nantes on a map. That's where the last the TT took place, and I remember watching it live, in pins and needles sitting in my room. A room I would share 14 years later with my girlfriend from Nantes.

    • @doh-ray-meproductions4131
      @doh-ray-meproductions4131 4 года назад +1

      @@tmelendezmia The commentary from Phil and the late great Paul Sherwen was normally live. I was watching that stage live in Connemara Ireland. All of the clips I've watched seem to have the same commentary.
      Chavenel was a great rider, who wore yellow three times I think, but a rider who finished 2nd in Flanders and lost the win by inches. Lance's pat on the back was a really nice gesture.
      I'm convinced m, without the adreneline of the crash, the shoe coming undone from the pedal with just a 15 second margin, Armstrong would have lost yellow in the time trial. Jan came back to Lance after his first attack, normally, one attack from Lance and Jan was out the back door, not on this day. I think Lance would have cracked mentally, he was cracking, it took ages for him to come back to Jan on the first climb that day.
      Something that charged the air that day, wanted Lance to hang on. Its such a shame those tours are so tainted. All these riders were the creme de lá creme of their generation with or without drugs, I sometimes think, in a clean sport, 80% of the riders would have had similar results.
      I think Lance should do something more for the sport, to help it. Put his cards on the table, start a team with a clean charter, with a transparent commitment to clean racing. It would be nice, a nice to see Lance leading the charge to clean up cycling, working with the UCI. There's invaluable experience there. A clean cycling would be amazing. It's half way there already I think.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised in light of the bad blood between the two (and Armstrong's habit of holding a grudge forever), but it was a big thing at the time, and even more obvious in other footage I've seen, such as around the 1minute 20sec. mark here ruclips.net/video/GEqQW1-casM/видео.html

    I like the inside info guys! And I know you guys dont like Rudy Pevenage, but to blame him for the fall is not fair. He tried to do a recon in the morning, but Ullrich didn't want to do it. This Dutch Ullrich documentary ruclips.net/video/sNo0UUtW6mU/видео.html sheds a different light on the circumstances. I think Johan sthould definately watch it (It contradicts things in this podcast). The truth will somewhere in the middle. And Rudy gives credits for the professionalism of the blue train!

    I was there following the tour this year on our bikes riding the same route...Was fortunate to me Jan...He was chiseled like a statue, and probably the very best condition he ever brought to the Tour.

    In terms of the “no helmets on the final climb” discussion. Nibali’s crash on Alpe d’Huez in 2018 and Porte’s crash behind a motorbike in 2016 on Mont Ventoux are prime examples of why helmets are necessary on the final climb.

    Sastre had six or seven top 10 finishes at the Tour, making the podium twice and also finishing 4th.
    Sastre finished on the podium of the Vuelta three times, and also finished 2nd in the Giro. So your comment on Sastre is off side, disrespectful. Just because he's a climber? Pantani, Andy Schleck, Bernal, Simon Yates, the list goes on, just climbers.

    Sastre had 15 top 10 finishes in grand tours. Come on Lance, that's bullshit dude, Sastre deserves more respect than that. See, that's where there's a gap with you as a cycling fan, or someone who respects the traditions and history of the sport, you focused everything on the tour, and paid little homage as a rider to the rest of the calender. 15 top 10 finishes in grand tours is nit a flash in the pan, or his 08 Tour win, a "miraculous win". Sastre is also known as Mr Clean, erm, I wonder...

      i think lance places sastre, oscar and wiggins in the same boat. weak competition. though i should add that many years there would be a crash taking down some of the favourites before the last week.

      @@carlosgaspar8447 Lance probably views Sastre as an undeserving winner because he never came anywhere near Lance during Lance's 7 wins, but it can take a Tour winner years to mature physically, psychologically and tactically. Cadel Evans is a prime example of that, similar to Sastre, Cadel very gradually climbed the top 10 over the years.
      I think favourites are normally caught by crashes in the first week to eight days, where the peleton is most nervous. On reflection, Lance only been caught by one minor crash on Luz Ardiden is remarkable.
      When you check Sastre's results on wiki in the grand Tour panel, you see the progression and consistency at grand tours, and it's obvious.

      @@carlosgaspar8447 I still find it very hard to gauge what difference exactly Ferrari's doping programme made in transforming Lance into a 7 tines tour winner. We know the top ten over the 7 years were all mostly associated with doping, and Lance pioneered the high cadence technique which transformed modern cycling, and that cancer did seem to get rid of muscle mass around Lance's shoulders. I still have doubts as to whether Lance was a Tour winner in a clean sport. No doubt a naturally gifted athlete, but 90 per cent of riders who make the pro peleton are born with the gift of turning the pedals quickly. I wish pro cycling would just cop the fuck on and finish up with drug taking so we can know honest performances.
