I am a distant cousin to Gen Matt Clark, Tight fisted cousin to my Granmother in Scotland. He was a Glory hound and wanted, the pride of taking Rome despite the fighting courage of the Canadian tankers who fought so hard to clear his path. stuck for months in Anzio due to his inexperience. He was itching for the Glory of being first into Rome with his US units, even though being rescused by Gen Alexander, he wound up by breaking his direct orders as he headed wrongfully for Rome and Glory, while against his direct orders from Alexander, he permitted the entire fleeing Germans to get to the protection of the Gustav line instead of stopping them. Family or not, I was amused when his next day's paper was not about his taking Rome at all, but all about the long awaited 'D-Day' landings and the Second front. it took the wind out of his sails. It was said that Clark complained that the WW2 press didn't even let him enjoy his victory after that one day. His superiors were said to be livid by his lack of sense letting the Nazi units escape. Did he even think about the brave SeaForths or the courage of the Canadian Tankers who fought so hard to give him the eternal City.😢

WW2 battles were the last breath of British imperial military systems.... both USA and USSR demolished it by local independent movements gradually...Italian mountain topography is most suitable for stubborn defense lines.. exploited smartly by Germans... Documentary showed bravery, and good Canadian soldiers were fought over Italian peninsulas battlefields .

Sherman crews suffered horrible casualties but America learned a bloody lesson. Introducing the M1 Abrams. Armor Mobility and Firepower juggernaut.

Why when talking about the Sherman do people say "it is only protected by 52mm of armour"? I would rather have 52mm of armour than no armour, people say the Sherman was a useless tank because they keep comparing it with the Panther or Tiger. The Sherman was not a tank destroyer it was there to support infantry, a role which it was very good at. The Panther and Tiger were brought out with the idea of taking on other tanks especially the T34 and KV's. The Sherman should be looked at on it's own merits, a very capable and reliable tank.

The Sherman was big in number, sure and yes they say it was designed to support infantry BUT it was supposed to take on enemy armor and it just wasn’t up to it. To many crews sadly were burnt to a crisp dying a terrible death. All the veterans from the US I have seen simply laugh or are disgusted ( often both ) when trying to compare their vehicle to that of the enemy .

Big in number and quick to produce. Ww2 was a war of overwhelming logistics not firepower. While Germans we’re building these meticulous clockwork machines. America and the Soviets were pressing out machine after machine after machine.
