Instead of the usual over-humanising of female characters, they followed actual rat biology meaning the female rats are just smaller. Only five rats speak in the film, one of them having a feminine voice near the very end, and they are smaller than the rats with them so probably are female. This does raise another question however: since Remy is smaller, is he trans?

Rats can actually be gay, because they had an experiment where they put rats in the perfect lifestyle (rat heaven) and after a while most became gay among other things and then promptly died. (It had a bit more steps than that but yeah that's all that's relevant right now)
