I run reefer out of Oregon. Been doing it for 3 years now.
Ran van for 3 before that.
Oil field for 5 before that hauling crude and sand.
In March I spent 31 days on the road with a eld. So that means I had to do restarts and also used roll over hour and slit sleeper rule some days. Total I ran just over 13,000 miles. Made a little over 32 for the whole trip. I worked maybe 26 days total and some of those were half days (6-8 hours total drive and on duty).
That’s close to oil field money. Close 😆.
Just to give u an idea of what reefer pays: it is up and down but not as up and down as dry van or others.
Oregon or Washington area to Florida is a 9-10k load. Depending on how many drops, how heavy and what kind freight.
Nursery leaving the north west going to the north east pays 8-13k depending on drops and picks. Some are 5 to 10 picks and 10-15 drops.
But they pay 13k for those.
Fish coming out of the Seattle area going to the south east is another cash cow.
Here is the catch: they will not give u the load of your new or if you don’t have a record with the broker and they know they can depend on u.
Reefer is all about who u are, what kinda record u have and what kinda trips u do.
I like to run nw to se to Texas area to Vegas and then back to the nw. That normally takes 15-18 days and pays around 20k before fuel.
Another key thing to keep in mind is your insurance and fmcsa rating. They will pay more if u have excellent csa and excellent insurance rating. Yes the brokers see that when u call.
Go google “usda truck report”. It’s the usda report on how much food is produced in America and imported into America from Mexico and Canada. It’s directly from the government. It’s free to see.
They will show rates and volumes. Thats where all the brokers, shippers and trucking load boards get their information from.
The usda report, is the horses mouth if u will, when it comes to reefer freight.
Good luck sir. Just ask if u have any questions about reefer.

I’m about to pack up and move to the USA lol, there is definitely not kinda money here for reefer, but thanks so much this really opened up my eyes. I’ll definitely give you a shout if I got any questions.

the dry van and reefer market in southern ontario is over saturated and too many new carriers dropping rates and working for peanuts. unfortunately it’s starting to hit other types like flat bed and fuel hauling also
