The problem with Mahomes following Florio's advice of not signing any contract for a QB and maximizing his salary with one year deals is, Mahomes wanted to win Super Bowls. He knows the Chiefs have to know his salary to negotiate with Chris Jones and Travis Kelce and all the other players. He wants to win Super Bowls. As many as possible. A QB who negotiates a one year salary and says I'm ready to walk, cannot win Super Bowls. He might maximize his salary for a few years, but he won't be regarded as the greatest QB to ever play. Mahomes wants the fame, and enough fortune too. The fortune will take care of itself for the greatest QB ever.

Florio is an agent (leech if you ask me) -- so he's naturally going to give advice that benefits agents. When successful players talk about the biggest off-field risk is with whom they surround themselves their choice of agent is near the top of that list. And *that* is why Florio had to get into journalism.

I'm a Commanders fan so take this with a grain of salt. I like Dak, I believe he is a good QB, not elite, but good. He has been on some decent Cowboys teams over the years, but they just can't get to the big game. There is a lot of finger pointing to go around so maybe Dak isn't to blamed for the entirety of the Cowboys woes. The defense fell apart in the playoffs last year, maybe he could of won that game if they showed up, I don't know. If Dallas is going all in, then they need to make big and drastic changes. New coach, new QB and maybe the owner can sit in the owners box and not try to micro manage the people he hired to build a championship caliber team.

Either Florio has no concept of diminishing returns or he is purposely ignoring it because he wants to stoke drama and get people to pay attention to him.
If you're a QB on a rookie deal and your first 3 years are up and you're good enough to warrant a max contract, you can sign a contract for hundreds of millions of dollars total at that point, likely earning yourself an average of $50+ million per year after your 5 year rookie deal is over. Based on the way contracts tend to be structured though, you will get a big upfront signing bonus right at the point you sign the contract. And in later years your team can restructure your contract to give you more upfront money which almost certainly will happen to provide more salary cap space in the short term.
Or the player can do as Florio says, refuse to sign anything, only get the money on your rookie deal until the 5 years are up, then be franchised which gives you a lot of money for one year, but no long term security.
The latter would mean a player doesn't want to sign for hundreds of millions of dollars after only 3 years and wants to risk it all by going year to year, all to get at the end of the day what is probably just a few extra million dollars per year. Is all that extra waiting and considerably more risk worth it just for that? For star QBs, no. That's why you don't see it happen.
And of course as always is the case in these discussions, Florio leaves out the fact that every extra million the QB makes, that's less money that goes to their teammates.

That Green Bay game showed conclusively that they got out coached and out played. But, that was 100% Dak's fault too. Right.

Dak is always hanging round 9-13 in qb rankings. But he doesn’t stand a chance against the field since cowboys talent level is falling relative to their competitors . The universe was clearly showing them to go after Derrick Henry. He wanted to play in Dallas; the Cowboys clearly needed a running back; Henry lives in Dallas. Yet these bozo's didn't even call the guy! Lmao! Dak has been the fall guy and target for all this mismanagement, as was Romo, which is why I hope Dak leaves this team and let's the fans deal with a few 5 and 12 seasons. Now Baltimore, Kansas City, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Green Bay, and Buffalo, have better and classier organizations. The Jones' not wanting to pay their players reminds me of southern companies not wanting to pay their employees in the 1960s. It so backward.
