My favorite Byrd tune, amazing. The constant progression, and the last 3 minutes. Amazing Producers/Composers, the Mizell Brothers were.🔥🔥🔥

That’s my favorite thing about the Mizells...the way they increase the intensity of their compositions as the song goes on!

His name among many others are mentioned on the front cover of Guru's Jazzmatazz vol 1 album
It's how I became introduced to Donald Byrd through Hip Hop

Thanks for the reaction...this is Donald’s full band with him on flugelhorn as usual. This is another one of those Mizell Brothers productions ...Fonce and Larry who were a couple of guys who really changed Donald’s sound in the 70’s from traditional jazz/bebop to jazz funk! Donald was already in his late 30’s and looking for some new and interesting music. He was also a music professor at Howard University at the time where he ended up forming his best students into the Blackbyrds. BTW...I’m really enjoying this trip with you and some of the other contributors!

Reminds me of washing my Camaro in the 70's on a Saturday afternoon. A well known Jazz station in LA (KKGO 105.1, and Smooth Jazz station KJLH 102.3) played this often in the 70's👍 Oh how I miss those days..

The great Donald Byrd after many years as a trumpet impresario was a Howard University music teacher and the Blackbyrds were made up of some of his select music students at the college!

Thanks for this one! You stumbled up on one of the all-time greatest Fusion Music classics! Never sleep on Donald Byrd, the Mizell brothers and I believe, the great Bobbie Humphrey on flute! This song was magical and between Donald ,& Bobbie's masterful playing over that Mizell groove you can't loose Yung Playa!

The Blackbyrds were Donald's back up band....Donald Byrd was a solo artist before he hooked up with the Blackbyrds. Oh Yeah, this song has a nice, clean, and clear sound.

Yep! Dr. Byrd taught music at Howard University and the guys who made up The Blackbyrds came up under his tutelage.

This is my jam!!! I love jazz. But, I really enjoy this particular era of jazz fusion. Some did jazz funk. Others did more jazz funk. Then, there was rock, folk, and pop crossover.
I think you'd enjoy 2 things. Najee (jazz artist) did a tribute reinterpretation of Songs in the Key of Life. Also, check out the Streetwise and Hidden Beach Recordings of popular R&B and Rap songs done in jazz.

My bad! Lan,-San-As Priestess featured the Flute of the great Roger Glenn along with the flugelhorn of the the late great Donald Byrd with an all-star lineup including the great Harvey Mason on drums! Man I love the piano on here too!
