I can't help but smile every time I see you two getting to experience a Steely Dan song for the first time. You have such keen musical insights and always pick up on the genius.
Right there with you
Exactly! Well said.
Watching you two young fellas listening to so many great songs for the first time - songs I've listened to and enjoyed for decades - is like vicariously experiencing some of the best moments of my youth over and over again.... and for that, this old dude appreciates and thanks you.....
You’re a major dude😏
@@rosemarypugliese2984 Right back at ya, dude-ette!!
Love seeing comments like yours. I was just describing to my sister why I enjoy these music reaction channels so much by saying, " It's like watching someone open a present you know they're gonna love". The years I spent hanging around musicians are long gone but am glad I had them. ❤
@@Neillybob63 going to SD tribute band tonight, will see if they play Bodh
@@mitzifrancis9843 "It's like watching someone open a present you know they're gonna love".... wow... perfectly said!!
LA's head shake and "no f'in way" facial expression is the ultimate compliment to the artists. 😄
You and when there is a blank stare it is a no go
The musicianship. That’s Steely Dan. ❤❤❤
One of the most unique songs I've ever heard. Only steely Dan could do this.
This album is killer and this song is just amazing. The lead guitar player is Denny Dias and he just nailed the solos and fills. The dude was channeling on this one.
Fun fact, Dias was a founding member of Steely Dan with Fagen and Becker and was a huge contributor and lead guitarist on Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic then appeared numerous times as a session guitarist on future recordings.
Denny Dias is a legend and a treasure. They were all just killing it during this period and at the peak of their powers as musicians.
I think Dias was the one that posted the ad looking for rock musicians "with jazz chops" to form a band. Fagen and Becker responded to the ad.
Yep, you're right. I forgot about that@@ednicholson7839
I was walking in home depot a few years ago and all of a sudden my ears caught this through the audio system. I don't if it was the radio or what. But I didn't look around before I started getting down. Then I noticed the people staring at me. I just kept going, one guy looked like he knew what was up.
Me too. 😮I just want to break out a wild twist and end up on the floor 😂😅 WHEW!
😂😂😂😊
This is fire 🔥. The live version in my opinion is even better 👌. As always fellas you do not disappoint 👏. And I hope that I speak for everyone . Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
The live version with the epic introduction? Fantastic. I think it was the B-side of a single, and then found a place on the Citizen Dan compilation.

Yes!!! I love this version song, but the live version is the “correct” tempo and even better! ;)

That introduction is priceless. Apparently it was some random drunk trucker or something?@@lancealrick6898
Question: They showing off? Yeah, they showing off...Elevating all of us
Steely Dan are the masters of tasteful solos. Whether it be the piano solo in Fire in the Hole or the outro guitar solo in this here song. So fucking sick
You guys are just great! I've just discovered you tonight! I've loved Steely Dan all my life! Sending love from England!
They are so good that they can overwhelm you. There are no words.
A Bodhisattva is a person able to reach nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion in order to save and help suffering beings.
Like Airplyplay Beats, passing on the College of Musical Knowledge to enlighten us will help us see some good in this crazy world.
Thanks, guys; music is our path to nirvana. Can't wait for y'all to hit more Donald Fagen solo stuff and more Dan.
Brilliance on display.
Never gets old ...nor disappoints.
Without a doubt - this is my favorite Steely Dan jam. There’s so much to love about this band. However - this track features all of the genres that influence their songwriting, the mastery of their musicianship, the complex arrangement, production values, and vocals…which exemplify their unique sound.
YES!!! Awesome....KING of the WORLD is coming..
One of my favorite Steely Dan tunes. The guitar solos by Denny Dias are amazing. I can tell your brains were happy to hear this one. Great reaction as usual.
I wondered if this was Denny Dias...thx. Amazing, indeed.
SD made unbreakable music. It never gets old.
This song is so great because it doesn’t just rock, it swings!
Reminds me of old school swing ! Keep rockin guys. Love love love everything you do.This was so much fun!
Most of these tunes you guys review... BACK IN THE DAY we would hear these songs over and over again. No escaping from it. Before cell phones, great music ruled and was always a draw. Hearing all these songs 100 times on the radio, we learned and know every word. Line ON-AIR Radio Disc Jockeys would feel the mood of the day and always play the right tunes for the moment.
Well Put and so true ❗ We are so fortunate to have these bands on our radio dial. 🎵🎵🎵
Probably their hardest rocking song!
Felt like they were trying to outdo Reeling in the Year’s two part guitar harmony with a three part harmony!
This predates the rockabilly Stray Cat’s craze by at least five years. Just a phenomenal high energy tune!
👍🏼🎸🎼🔥😎
Brian Setzer and his big band covered "Bodhisattva."
The last guitar solo weaves around the bass line, Magic
Best album of all time? Exquisite from beginning to end!
way up there without a doubt
You guys are great❤
Have always loved this song...
Great opening track from a great album. Every single song deserves a listen. Nice to see another Dan reaction from you guys!
And underneath all that, it's a blues shuffle.
I was waiting for you to get to this one. It's not like any other SD song, great song.
Bebop meets rock! It's like putting Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix together in one guitarist and telling him that Steely Dan's been lookin' for ya.
Steely Dan has alot of great songs but this is my all time favorite one. Its also one of my all time songs period!!! It is too short to me.
Mine too!
Love Steely Dan. Another great song is Time out of mind and Chain Lightning. There are so many outstanding songs by this group. Home at Last is another one, from when they moved from the east coast to the west coast. Trust me, they went back to the east coast. Another great reaction. ❤
You mean Time Out of Mind, which includes that line ‘…tonight when I chase the dragon…’ Great tune, indeed.
Yo, I had never heard that breakdown at the end... that was incredible. Bruh said "Lookout" and they all went NUTS!
I feel so lucky to have grown up in a time when it was common to hear Steely Dan songs all over the radio.
This is old school boogie woogie with jazz stutters in between refrains. My sister and her boyfriend wanted to get rid of me for awhile so he plunked this down on the platter and I've never been the same. They came back and I said, "But I'm not done yet."
Boogie Woogie indeed!
@@cherylwoodward, and those are soft 'G's'. So it's more like boojie woojie.
The Dan is by far my absolute favorite band. It is so cool watching and listening to you guys react to this. Puts a huge smile on my face. And one great thing about Steely, the more you listen, the better it gets!I've listened to Bodhisattva at least 250 times, I've heard it live 3 times and listening to it here again was still MAGIC! Question for you La and Che, it's almost a year since you first reacted to Steely Dan. You've reacted to a lot of different music. Are their songs still at the top of your list of favorites or has another band's music surpassed them? Thanks Guys and keep em coming!
JAWDROPPING TECHNICAL STUFF!!! LOVE THEM!! WHO in their RIGHT MIND couldn't just LOVE STEELY DAN???!!! Great Reaction, Guys!! HUGS! ❤
Hell yah. Take me back to my high school graduation year. I still have this album. If only we could all be Bodhisattvas who jammed like this. Steely Dan continued to evolve to ever higher levels like no other group, actually duo, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, with a host of "guest" musicians who were in the top of their field, e.g. Larry Carlton, Jeff Baxter, Michael McDonald, to name just a few.
One of the best songs ever. Rock on.
Always one of my fav SD tunes
Soooo good I'm literally crying!!
This is the first Steely Dan track I ever heard, my brother's girlfriend brought the album round and persuaded us to let her put it on the record player (we'd been playing Grateful Dead records as usual) we listened through side one, turned it over and played side two then played side one again. That was shortly after it came out back in nineteen seventy something. :D
I suspect you two might enjoy King of the World off this album. Yes, there are still many steely gems out there.
Steely Dan the only band to fuse jazz and rock seamlessly
It so much fun. Love you guys.
So far ahead of it's time.
This whole album is great. Even a little prog with King of the World.
“Look out” excellent song & reaction! 🙌
Love watching you soaking up another fine Dan tune! This never gets old or stale, just pure musicianship at its best! Your reactions are the best there is! More, please?!
Killing it.....iconic great track.
Pure boogie woogie!
Rock meets jazz. Cool rock with jazz sophistication. In the 1970s Fusion was getting big. It was like prog but the jazz was evident. Surprisingly, thankfully, there was a market for this cool music.
What an album.
That's some major league guitar riffs right there...😂
Sure is!
This song is badass .can't beat the Dan when they were this good .those jazz leanings are fire.
That Steely Dan guy is pretty damn good ain't he 😆
Excellent album. Green Earrings and Pearl of the Quarter are probably my favorites, but it's hard to choose a favorite Steely Dan song. They are all great.
When I saw them on their reunion tour back in ‘93 they blew the roof off with this song.
I saw them that same year in Massachusetts. Right around the same time, 93-95ish, I met Peter Erskine, who played drums with them that year (1993). Even better, the same day I met Peter, he was with Myron Grombacher, Armond Zildjian, Gress Bissonette, Adam Nussbaum. They were at a drum store in Quincy Mass. I had them all sign my guitar, shot the sh!t with them. for a while. Awesome day!
That is amazing! Hell of a crew!
I’ve seen the MANY times and I wait for My Old School for the guitars and cow bell!
Good reaction fellas, that was just sweet!
As many times as I have heard this, I never noticed that when the piano comes in at the beginning, it has a Dave Bruebeck "Take Five" sound to it. Now I can't unhear it. Not relevant to your reaction but something I noticed. Love me some Steeley Dan.
I also hear John Coltrane's "Giant Steps".
Thus track is all about Buddhism! I think it was Walter Becker who was getting into it when this was recorded, it's about Enlightenment! A person who in Buddhist and knows all you can but does not go to Enlightenment and stays in Mortal form is called a Bodhisattva
Great to see you react to Steely Dan again!
Love you guys and your great reactions. Glad you guys discovered the Dan and their unique groove and musical genius! The more you listen to them, the more you appreciate them. Keep up the good work! RIP MR. BECKER.
They do have a Steely Dan chord it's called the Mu chord.
Add the second.
Hands down my favorite SD track. The guitar 🎸 shreds that song apart
I remember my roommate when I was like 19 was trying to turn me on to this or rather trying to turn me on to Steely Dan, and I'd heard Go Back Jack Do It Again on the radio since I was a little kid and I loved it, but I don't know, at the time, the later stuff I just kind of thought we'll that's too mellow for me, I was into just so much hard rock and punk and metal and all that kind of thing. But once I told him that, he said, well, check out this one.
And he cranked up Bodhisattva on the stereo and wow. It just cooks so hard.
Just crazy good 😊
I had to watch your reaction again. It's so appropriate!
I’ve seen interviews with guitarists who talk about the chords Donald Fagan wanted them to use. Sometimes there were chords that were easy to play on a piano but damn near impossible on a guitar
Always love your Steely Dan reactions. ⭐️😁
Yay! Been waiting for this! One of the first songs I heard that got me hooked on Steely Dan. Nothing sounded like that in 1972. And lyrics fascinating and on point as always.
Bodhisattvas are often depicted as enlightened beings who have given up their own salvation to help others attain enlightenment. They are often portrayed as having qualities such as morality, self-sacrifice, and wisdom.
Great song to play when driving on an expressway!
This is a smokin' joint, but the LIVE version is a beast !!! If not on RUclips, can be found on the "Gold" album......Carry On Men !!!
another good on this disk "King of the World.....Keep up the good work
Layers upon sophisticated Layers, so cool and fun on the ears
This one is so different for them but what a sound
The Live version (forget where, somewhere in Cali) is AWESOME....just for the Band's introduction by the "drunk" MC!!! Must listen.
My fav SD album. It's fun!
Danny freaking Dias....Master of his craft
Beautiful another victory my musical prodigy producer friends
An insane jam just for its own sake. The lyrics, while interesting, are probably incidental (or maybe I should say Oriental). One of my favorites by the Dan.
This just rocks so hard!
So much going on...very deep
Nothing Skunk Baxter does is bad. The man is a legend.
Yeah you got it right away, cool! Like 50's rock with his twists. I think. Nice!
The reoccurring 3:55 part is a gift from God
The term "incendiary" gets overused when referring to a guitar driven track but it totally fits here. They really let them loose here. The twin guitars are Thin Lizzyesque
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is why I subscribe and watch--you brothers get it.
Countdown is one beautiful album. Great follow-up to Can't Buy a Thrill with a whole different personality, yet still quintessential Steely Dan.
Pure early fusion have always loved these guys
Fantastic song😮
One of my favorite Steely songs is a complete jam.
They called them mu major chords (my phone doesn't have the mu symbol). It's a major triad with an added 2nd. Easy in the keyboard, not so easy on guitar! That's the Steely Dan sound in a nutshell
The live version of this from Santa Monica in 1980 has a sick intro (it's on the citizen steely Dan box set)
edit: I'm listening to it now. I forgot that they must've done half a key of coke before this performance.
You can also hear gospel influences that Fagen has discussed in interviews. I LOVE this album. Shout out to Denny Dias.
I've been waiting for you guys to check this one out 🙂
I was just listening to this a few days back. You have to either bob your head or tap your feet....something has to move.
They ordered new guitar picks after cutting that tune.. There was a little "Chuck Berry Maybelline" in that song.
