    IMPORTANT tip! use CTRL+B then Z to Zoom in a pane, making it fill entire screenspace, ctrlB+Z to zoom back again! VERY handy! TMUX is so versatile and perhaps one of the very most productive tools for any sysadmin or terminal tinkerer! THANK YOU for bringing this up, GREAT videos as usual! :)

    Tmux made life much easier for me back in the day when I was using irssi for IRC tech support and monitoring a few servers.

    I used screen for years so I find these days I’ll run screen on remote servers and tmux on my local machine to manage all those remote sessions. As old mate pointed out, you can nest tmux, but I like the logical separation on having ctl-b to operate on a global level then ctl-a to operate on the specific server.

    Over the years I have switched Shells from dash to zsh to fish. I use to use Screen but these days I use TMUX. However I still use Screen for Serial connections to Microcontrollers and and older systems.

    Thank you for this great introduction of this awesome tool. I use it for some months now and it change life. It allows a unique ssh connection, it may be very useful for slow networks.I like the "zoom" feature with ctrl+b then z to zoom in a pane temporarily. Like an "always on top" function.

    I need to move to Tmux from "screen".. I've been using screen since the mid-90's, so I'm really used to it, not so much for Tmux. Thanks for the quick overview!

    I don't know if it's my view (or my eyes) but I couldn't read the text in your terminal session. The presentation itself was great because it covered the essentials and best configuration settings. It was a strong tutorial, overall.

    Do you need to install it on both your local system and the remote system for it to work or is it more "one way"?
    For example, if I want to use it on my local system to remote into my remote system, would I need to install tmux on the remote system?
    Or would I need to install tmux on the remote system JUST to be able to tmux ON that remote system (but not necessarily on the local system as well)?
    Thanks.

    If you don't need the session control and just want screen splitting, Terminator will do that and the key bindings are easier to remember and use.
    Tmux looks really interesting as like a combination of screen and Terminator but the key bindings look a bit too Emacs for me. :)

    When I install the files it doesnt reflect alot of the changes, such as the local lan ip on the bottom left. All the bash changes seem to be reflected, any ideas?

    Another capability for tmux is that you can attached to the same tmux session multiple times (either with the same account, or with different account on the same box if you change the permissions to the socket): www.howtoforge.com/sharing-terminal-sessions-with-tmux-and-screen
    This allows multiple people to look at the tmux session at the same time. (It also means that all users attached to the same session can also type at the same time which doesn't tend to work well. This is more about having multiple eyes on a problem where someone leads the work or take turns.)

    I am running Docker and using your ".tmux.conf" it gives me a 172.x.x.x Docker address instead of my usual 192.x.x.x address. How do I get around this problem?

    After setting up a ssh key and disabling password login, tmux is the first thing I install after setting up a Linux system.

    I don't really get the difference between this and "screen" + multi terminal windows. But looks nice.

    • @JoshuaBurgess
      @JoshuaBurgess 4 года назад +2

      Its handy if you don't have window manager, so you're limited to one "terminal window".

    I have a question: why people pronounces the Linux /lee-niks/ but the Tmux /tee-m^ks/? Learning English is harder than coding a whole project by myself.

    • @LAWRENCESYSTEMS
      @LAWRENCESYSTEMS  Год назад

      One of the big challenges of English is there are more than one way to pronounce things that are still correct.
