On my first listen, I wasn't hooked. I thought it was all over the place and no one track stood out to me. Thought it was like a mud puddle with no distinctions. But on my second listen I was completely hooked. I mean completely. It was spinning on the record player non stop side A to D all day yesterday and I don't see today being any different. Or tomorrow. This is a fantastic album.
I’m sure I’m reading too much into potential “lore”, but I find it very curious how this album called The Last Will and Testament feels like the most direct progression of Watershed, and the album artwork of Watershed is a man sitting at a desk writing…
This is the final key of their long transformation journey. They really hit all the points that makes them such a force to be reckon. They know when to go heavy, soft, and when to have fun experimenting with everything that they've learned throught their carreer.

The Last Will and Testament IMHO is Opeth's best album since Ghost Reveries. It perfectly blends the band's modern progressive rock sound with elements of their past into a truly fantastic listen. Also, Riley, thank you for suggesting Lying Figures. I was hooked as soon as I heard the song "Euphoria and Misery."
Just a small complaint to be that one nerd. Opeth did not go progressive or prog in 2011. They've always been prog. Their whole career is prog. They just cut out the metal parts and were left with twice the amount of rock. I hate it when people refer to 2011-2024 as Opeth's prog era as it's total nonsense. Rather refer to the 'phases' as Oldpeth, Newpeth and now Neopeth. Or some like that.
Need to give it a lot more listens (and will), but first listen I got hints of In Cauda, Sorceress (but heavier), Ghost Reveries, Watershed, but all wrapped in an extra proggy blanket. Might be because I listened through their discography again, but did anyone else get the feel and atmosphere of Damnation in A Story Never Told? Again, only one listen in which will be rectified now
Awesome review! This is easily their best since watershed but I don’t think it’s amazing. Once I got past the admittedly thrilling return of growls and death metal I found it to be a little meandering and lacking in hooks. I think the bookends shine but the middle section dragged a bit. And I honestly don’t give a shit about the concept. You could’ve told me any of their records were concept albums and it wouldn’t make a difference. The vibe is very haunting though so props there. It felt like the soundtrack to a more experimental “Shining”. I’d give it a 4/5 after a few listens.
First listen yesterday, it felt suuuuuper crowded and close to overflowing at all times. I still think that to some extent 3 spins later. I think it would be better with a little nudge less of about everything that's on top of the basic instruments, and maybe a bit more time to breathe here and there. We'll see what the next few spins give away.
You have me so stoked for the album! It’s funny what Michael said about bringing back the growls when nobody cared because I was fine thinking he’d never do it again. But hearing that voice now, with that music… tears of joy! This could very well be my favourite 2024 release and I’ve only heard what you played in this video.
My favourite Opeth albums are (in no particular order) Ghost Reveries, Watershed and Heritage, so I was absolutely thrilled upon hearing §5, which is basically Heritage vibes and Opeth death metal combined 😍😍😍
They're my favorite band but I can't go any higher than 8/10 at the moment. Way too many layers, and not as catchy as past albums. It gets better with every listen though.

@henrywalton5967 but this is him being more talented as a singer? I will never understand this criticism, seeing as the breath control and technique has to develop to sustain a vibrato effectively. Your criticism is basically saying you want him to sing more straight tones and stifle his technique. Re read that and give your head a shake.

This album flies by, it’s such a fun listen, never drags. I just listen over and over and pick up on things I hadn’t noticed last time. When I first listened I thought it was more prog heavy, but now I’m really hearing how fuckin heavy and evil this album sounds. Some of the most sinister mind blowing guitar solos they’ve ever done. This album gets better every listen! Every song has something to offer. So good, so happy with this.
Opeth have pulled off what precious few bands ever have. They've made an album that is like a coupler joining prog death metal Opeth to the full on prog of the previous four albums. The two singles released before the album don't really give any insight into what to expect. Opeth has never been a "singles" type band and this one is no exception. There's a lot going here and the first listen may be a little rough, but I'm on my third way through it as I write this, and flying above the weather now. I was concerned about Mikael doing gutteral vocals. After all this time. He's only a year younger than me, and I feel every year most days. No worries there. His voice is deep and powerful as ever. Some Nů Peth fans will likely hate it, and there will be old farts my age who will find fault because it doesn't sound like Orchid, or even Blackwater Park. That's too band because I think Opeth may have just made those of us who love both our masterpiece. Now get off of RUclips and go get it... NOW !!! Because it's fucking amazing.
Always enjoy seeing Riley but I thought for sure Dylan would be doing this one. I know he's busy now with Seven Spires but I hope we still get to see him from time to time!

I love this album, agree it's a 5/5, and I just want to mention: For anyone who has not heard of them, if you enjoy THIS album, you should look at Piah Mater - Under the Shadow of a Foreign Sun. This album ALSO came out this year, and before I knew Opeth was gonna make their comeback like this, I was hailing it as the 2nd coming of Opeth. They have such a similar style, though of course with their own touches as well. They even have a sax on the album! A SAX! And it's rad! So, if you dig older Opeth, and now NEWER Opeth, check out Piah Mater. I am an old school Opeth fan, I've heard many bands that are of a similar ilk, but none have caught my ear in that same way until Piah Mater. I don't think I can put them on the same level as Opeth, which may be impossible for me in almost any case, but they're damn fine and will appeal to anyone with those same sensibilities :]
I don’t hear the Blackwater Park influence on this record. Not yet at least, not saying it isn’t there. I just haven’t heard a section and thought this is “Blackwater Parkish”. I hear is In Cauda Venenum mixed with crazy vocals that’s more artsy. Definitely I hear Ghost Reveries and Heritage on it. Pale Communion atmsophere and Watershed looping and noodling sprinkled in. A bit of Deliverance with how brutal it is and the delicious rhythms. A bit of Sorceress and Closure (Damnation) sounds like she said with the middle eastern vibes. This album is straight heat 🔥 10/10 As usual with Opeth. A flawless record. Not a dull moment. The sound effects, narration, everything is just perfect.

Something you know Opeth will always do... 1) Their music will be good quality, regardless of your genre preferences. 2) they never do the same thing twice.
I am like MANY that gave up on them after WATERSHED...THIS is a GREAT Return to what they USED to be ...KINDA... STILL better than the last few albums FOR SURE...
I guess I'm the only one who feels that this record is lackluster and doesn't even come close to Opeth's greatest records such as Still Life and Blackwater park. The Last Will & Testament is essentially just a continuation of what Opeth has been doing since Heritage. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound bad, and there are plenty of standout moments musically speaking, but regardless, it's still a far cry from Opeth's greatest material, including the last record that featured Mikael's growls, Watershed, which I still feel is one of Opeth's strongest and, in some regards, most underappreciated records. This latest release it's mostly just all-out 70's prog rock with some death metal vocals on top. It's very disappointing to me.
@@karayaziband I think people are just too caught up with the fact that Mikael brought his death growls back, which is why I and so many others got so excited for this record. But the music backing up those growls is just bland 70s prog. Not my thing. I'll just stick with the classics like Still Life.
Just listened to this one.... Holy shit this is what we wanted. A culmination of Opeth past and present. Reminds me a lot of Ghost Reveries. This thing is haunted and beautiful at the same time. The last song A Story Never Told is one of the most beautiful things I ever heard Opeth do. I welled up a lil bit. I only listened to it once so I can only rate it 4.5 out of 5. It can only go higher on repeated listens. Welcome back the Opeth I love. This is haunted art. Well done Opeth.
I'm not sure I'd give it a five out of five; the only two albums I've given that rating to are Ocean Machine by Devin Townsend and Mandylion by The Gathering. I'm thinking a 3.5 or 4.

I don't get the hate. Some people hate this...Opeth is FINALLY giving old fans what they want and so many of them are upset. This record is AMAZING. I think it ranks in the top third of their work. Every song is amazing and it is far heavier than I expected. FAR heavier. I love it.
We live in the era of hatred. Some people NEED to hate in order to feel that their empty lives are not wasted. You see it everywhere, and it is, not seldom, objectively wrong! As in this case. Or, God forgive, is the music too complex for these simpletons?
It happens to every band that evolves their sound over time, particularly if you made some of classic albums. I remember talking to old school death metal guys at a show and they were hating on opeth for becoming too "trendy" and "prog" in the Blackwater park days and basically, I think they wanted to go back to the orchid sound.
@ulfingvar1 Very dismissive take. Maybe people don't like it because, despite the growls and heaviness, the album still has the same sound or inspiration of their newer albums. The randomness, lack of hooks and lack of progression that's in albums like Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries is gone. Now, all songs sound the same and seem to take on a weird free-form jazz/prog nature that removes melody, brutality and individuality between tracks. It all just meshes together. So that's the reason people might 'hate' record - it's because this one sucks compared to their greats, and they're wanting to express genuine disappointment instead of joining into the mainstream pretentiousness of fanboying over an album they're pretending to understand. Simply adding growls doesn't automatically fix the problem.

Still life was kinda my arms your hearse, but better. Both are so excellent that I dont care though.
I am like MANY that gave up on them after WATERSHED...THIS is a GREAT Return to what they USED to be ...KINDA... STILL better than the last few albums FOR SURE...

I guess I'm the only one who feels that this record is lackluster and doesn't even come close to Opeth's greatest records such as Still Life and Blackwater park. The Last Will & Testament is essentially just a continuation of what Opeth has been doing since Heritage. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound bad, and there are plenty of standout moments musically speaking, but regardless, it's still a far cry from Opeth's greatest material, including the last record that featured Mikael's growls, Watershed, which I still feel is one of Opeth's strongest and, in some regards, most underappreciated records. This latest release it's mostly just all-out 70's prog rock with some death metal vocals on top. It's very disappointing to me.

@@karayaziband I think people are just too caught up with the fact that Mikael brought his death growls back, which is why I and so many others got so excited for this record. But the music backing up those growls is just bland 70s prog. Not my thing. I'll just stick with the classics like Still Life.
I agree with you (for now) since I had the same feeling when I finished giving the album a second listen, like it left me with a little taste.

The last song A Story Never Told is one of the most beautiful things I ever heard Opeth do.

I only listened to it once so I can only rate it 4.5 out of 5.
It can only go higher on repeated listens.

I'm not sure I'd give it a five out of five; the only two albums I've given that rating to are Ocean Machine by Devin Townsend and Mandylion by The Gathering. I'm thinking a 3.5 or 4.

I don't get the hate. Some people hate this...Opeth is FINALLY giving old fans what they want and so many of them are upset.
This record is AMAZING. I think it ranks in the top third of their work. Every song is amazing and it is far heavier than I expected. FAR heavier. I love it.

We live in the era of hatred. Some people NEED to hate in order to feel that their empty lives are not wasted. You see it everywhere, and it is, not seldom, objectively wrong! As in this case. Or, God forgive, is the music too complex for these simpletons?
It happens to every band that evolves their sound over time, particularly if you made some of classic albums.
I remember talking to old school death metal guys at a show and they were hating on opeth for becoming too "trendy" and "prog" in the Blackwater park days and basically, I think they wanted to go back to the orchid sound.
@ulfingvar1 Very dismissive take. Maybe people don't like it because, despite the growls and heaviness, the album still has the same sound or inspiration of their newer albums. The randomness, lack of hooks and lack of progression that's in albums like Blackwater Park or Ghost Reveries is gone. Now, all songs sound the same and seem to take on a weird free-form jazz/prog nature that removes melody, brutality and individuality between tracks. It all just meshes together.
So that's the reason people might 'hate' record - it's because this one sucks compared to their greats, and they're wanting to express genuine disappointment instead of joining into the mainstream pretentiousness of fanboying over an album they're pretending to understand.
Simply adding growls doesn't automatically fix the problem.
