People always ask “How do *I* become a voice actor?”
They never ask “How did *YOU* become a voice actor?”
There really is a distinct nuance to it. In a way, asking in that way implies that they don't want to work as hard as established voice actors. They just want to find out what the hidden shortcut is so they don't have to struggle as hard. Even worse if they haven't even bothered to look through already easily accessible resources.
They never ask "Voice become actor? a How YOU did"
they probs do ask
That's what I thought this video was about lol

How to become a voice actor:
Step 1: Recorder yourself reading a script
Step 2: Listen to yourself talking
Step 3: Abandon it completelly and become a farmer in Netherlands
How do I become a farmer in the Netherlands?
This comment really caught me off guard as someone who works on a farm from time to time in (you guessed it) the Netherlands

You know I never really wanted to be a voice actor but I'll be damned if I don't watch a ProZD vid whenever it comes out.
I dont like anime or boardgames. But prozd is somehow the best still.
I would love to do it myself, but the drive and passion are something I definitely need to work on first.
Cuz he’s a real one 💯
@@WhyDoBabiesStareAtMe motive has a momentum to it, if you say youre gonna do it enough, you begin to want to do it more
Hahaha I agree
If you’re using a janky-ish setup or a setup that you’re worried isn’t “clean” enough, you can easily EASILY use the FREE program, Audacity, to remove like white noise (staticky background noise) from your audio. I’ve seen music labels and youtubers with millions of subscribers miss this really easy step to clean up their audio. It takes almost no time and if you’re worried about quality, you might as well go ahead and do it.
Is this something you can download from the app store ?
@@jayvonwebb4864 Audacity is a program you download to your computer. There are some pretty clean recording apps out there though.
Jayvon Webb - Voice Record Pro for the iPhone is really good
I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the tip!
Careful not to overdo it though! You can easily end up with a 'wet'-sounding vocal take which is immediately recognizable as an 'amateur' recording.

Really disappointed that this video isn't 2 seconds long with Sung-Won just saying "Stop asking me this question"
I thought it was going to be a joke video as well..
This is a reference piece for his portfolio.
"See? I'm a good person. I'm easy to work with."
Alternately, you know, he's really a good dude.
look at h jon benjamin (archer, bob's burgers), he always does the same voice but hes still amazing
First thing I thought of when he said that
That’s true!!!! A great reminder
One of my favorite voices, and it really always is the same damn voice again and again. But it's a good one.
My mind went to Steve Blum.
See also: Kyle Hebert. I'm pretty sure that unlike Steve Blum and several others, he's actually INCAPABLE of doing different voice, but it works for him just fine.

You don't even need to do that, SungWon's own videos are a good example of the kinda stuff that can showcase your talents. From these, people know he's good at xyz voices and has an xyz typw of humor. It could really be anything.
If you don't get them striked for copyright...
Doing that also sharpens other skills. Writing, Acting, Video Editing, Sound Editing, Visual Effects, etc.
Especially if you are working by yourself. And that really opens up a lot of other opportunities. Video editors are always in demand, for example.
Abridging can actually ruin your chances of getting VA parts BECAUSE of what abridging is. So it's not recommended.
@@YamiKisara_ Who says this?
What I've found is that abridging (when done correctly) is not only completely legal, but is actually a mutually beneficial endeavor.
You get to have people like your show (and all the experience that comes with that too), and the owners of the show get more traffic and interested generated in their original product.
I’ve wanted to get into voice acting since I was a kid and honestly seeing you talk about this gives me the confidence to actually try
I needed this video... I’ve been trying to get my foot in the door and I have been feeling down recently.... but after watching this video it just reaffirmed that I really want to do this for the rest of my life. Logically I know this business is filled with “no’s” and awkward-ness at times..... but it gets to you and when it does... sometimes there’s no motivation to do anything at all, even functioning on a normal level.
I’ll keep trying my best. Again, thank you. I needed to see this.
My wife has a voice-acting credit, for an indie studio's recent game. She's on IMDb and everything. She saw an audition call, auditioned, and was accepted. (She auditioned for another game, but didn't get it) She's also done many videos and used to be a stage performer.
My brother doesn't have an IMDb credit, but he played the main villain (and the villain's long-suffering computer sidekick) in a series of flash videos. He just asked the animator, and the animator said yes. ("Took a chance", as my brother's LinkedIn page says)
I, on the other hand, have had an interest in voice acting since the 1980s, learning the names of various voice actors and following their careers. I've fallen behind a bit, but I can still recognize quite a few even if they're doing "funny" voices. In the mid 2000s, I was asked to voice act for a friend's student video (she was going to school for animation, and this was her senior project). I was really excited about it and threw myself into it, recording several takes. But she didn't like any of my takes, threw out all those recordings, and wound up playing all the characters herself. That's the closest I've ever gotten to voice acting. Or any acting. It's kinda discouraging.
Hey Man, i just started voice acting last year where im currently working on a very small series with some people i met only, and these tips generally really help, thank you so much. trying to improve in voice acting takes alot of time, and from this project, i know i wont really get any from of connections to anybody that generally work with voice acting but hey, its a start and you gotta start somewhere and improve from that part forward. thank you so much for making this video, it was much help for a very small voice actor such as myself
Honestly this has been really helpful for both the links and honesty. I’ve been working with my voice for a while now but only recently thought about expanding my horizons. This is something I’ve been wanting to pursue for fun for a long time.
I thought that was a sketch lol
The world will explode if he ever releases a 12 minute skit
Thought this was gunna be a bit but nope just nothing but great advice. Been practicing in the car and with alone time for a long while and just got a little setup to get started. Videos like this are helping me finally take the plunge. Thanks dude you're a big inspiration!
i love this super frank, detailed, and realistic advice about voice acting. i love how harsh it is, it may not be what we want to hear but its really what we should be hearing.
YES THE MOST WANTED VIDEO EVER!!!

I don't want to be a voice actor but this was still fascinating and I ended up watching the whole thing. I have a lot of respect for people who pursue artistic careers considering how high the risk is that you won't even make a livable wage. They must be really passionate to work so hard at something that's not even guaranteed.
Im not sure how to explain this but this video just made me feel so much better. I truly appreciate this video more than I think I should. Thank you ProZD
I love your explanation, as someone who has always loved acting and just living into a character, just never had the courage to start or never knew where to start, but honestly I would search someone who has experience and that can teach me how to voice act
Hey dude! I have just recently got it in my head that I should give voice acting a try, and then I come across this. A lot of what you had to say really resonates with me. Your advice has given me new perspective and something to think about before I really commit to the art. Thank you for putting this out there.

Currently in the part where I’ve been a theatre actor for years and I have a good setup at home. Just trying to get my foot in the door my own way and this video made me feel better about where I’m at in the process. Thank you for your words of wisdom! :)
“you have to make friends and natural relations”
Welp, guess that means I’m out
Not yet I’m looking to get into the voice acting world are you interested in reaching that world with me?
Networking is going to be your key in any creative industry; hell, in any industry.
I love the voice over industry and love seeing more and more of this type of content. Have a great week! 🎧🎙💪
I really want to voice a villain, like a really short mad scientist with a high but raspy voice who really likes calling people FOOOOOLLLLSSS.
“If it’s not something you really want it’s probably not worth your time” It’s not something I REALLY want but It’s the first thing that ever genuinely sparked an interest for me. I feel it’s only the fact that I’m really anxious about performing that’s stopping me from really wanting it. I’m trying to get over this situation but have no idea how to when I can barely hold a general phone interview (ofc not for this specifically) without shaking.
This is a good advice for any career. Work hard to get good and work hard to network with people.
I'm one of those people who maybe 'knows' not to ask this, but is always hoping to hear people answer anyway. I'm sorry we do that to you, but for what it's worth I'm really grateful that you put this answer up.
Your answer specifically has helped me a lot, you're the first of the voice actors I've seen asked the question to spend time pointing out that this is something that can be pursued as a personal passion, that as long as it's creatively fulfilling, you can voice act outside of the professional/paid work sphere. That might be a better fit for me personally, and I'm sure it will be for others too.
Solid advice. Not only for voice acting but really any fields.
I really appreciate the frank no nonsense view into your field.
Having just watched this video, it’s really surprising how much I needed and could have used this advice. You were always one of my inspirations, Sungwon. All of what you said hit real close to home, and it would have helped back when I was hanging my head low in the sand. Regardless of whether or not you read this or not, I just want to give you my thanks.
I really needed this I am really nervous to try to put myself out there and thank you for this even though it’s from two years ago
My voice is deeper than yours, ProZD. Both people I know and strangers say something to me about doing radio or voice acting every day. It's definitely something I'd like to look into, it just seems a little overwhelming to try and start.
I mean I'm someone who has always done voices, impressions just for fun and even did some voice acting in a video game development course I was on in college a few years back and I have always been curious how to progress this but this is information I will keep in mind.
This is honestly just good advice for any art form
This was really great, thank you for this!!! The bit about just doing recordings etc when you start just to get comfortable is exactly what I needed to hear!! It felt a little overwhelming trying to figure out where to put my foot down, but now I can absolutely tackle that first! I’ve already been doing a little bit just playing around with acting with my dnd group (lol) Thank you for such great advice!❤️❤️
I love this video and how blunt and straight to the point it is.
For me I think this video was very inspirational in a way I really enjoyed your advice and your thoughts it really helps people to know what's it like and help them try and achieve it in a way I want to say thank you ^^
A random visit to the persons channel that made me interested in voice acting judt so happens to have just released a video about it. Fantastic
This man needs to meet Joe Zieja
Interesting colab...
This video dropped about two days after I reached out to a RUclipsr I've watched since 2010 about a voice role for the game he's making. I've expressed interest in doing a role for his game when he gets to that point, and another one of his fans sort of guided me towards reaching out to him when the time was right.
Long story short I took the initiative, emailed him, he liked what I sent him and he'll be reaching back out to me once he has some lines written (my first gig!). It really is about who you know. Reach out, converse with people. You never know who you might start working with!
Thanks for the TLDR it’s really late and I’m so tired i could be sleeping in less than a minute
I actually can't believe / feel really dumb that I didn't know ProZD voice acted The Majesty from Radiant- I was so IN LOVVEEEE with Radiant!!!
Thanks appreciate this. I am willing to keep putting in the work no matter how long it takes.Wish everyone the best never give up you will regret it!
Thank you for this. I bet it's downright nauseating how often you get asked this question. Thank you for taking the time to explain and for the pure honesty😊 ~Fade~
I didn't realize it was the animal crossing music in the background. But I felt really good. I always use it to fall asleep or relax, so very nice x3
Ive always wanted to try my hand at it, but this video seems like a good start
Thank you for posting this, sir. 🤝
Really great and concise video. Appreciate the direct tips and no fluff
Congrats on voicing the manager in aggressive retsuko!
Want to voice act as a hobby. Didn’t know how to start. Thank you for making this video!
Thank you for the awesome video. It was really interesting to listen your honest opinion about it.
I think the importance of networking is an often understated part of MANY industries. It doesn't matter how good you are if no one knows about it.
And how do you get people to recognize your skills? NETWORKING!
I've met many people who really dislike the notion of who you know being more important than what you know, but it's an unfortunate reality that the statistical majority of us will have to deal with. But if you're aiming for success, then a good strategy is to figure out who you NEED to know, then get to know them. And this is just as applicable in tech fields as it is in artistic ones.
Edit: And this isn't to say that personal skills AREN'T important. They certainly are. But there are a lot of people in the world, and while a hiring manager might want the world's best, they usually don't have all the time in the world to fill positions and there can only be one world's best... a criterion most people won't meet. An acceptable candidate found in a week may be preferable to a great candidate that takes a year to find.
Rewatching this as I consider voice acting classes and lol I never noticed the white balance on his camera going crazy
*hair swishes
Me: Now Im convinced
I love how raw this video is lol
I'm sure it slapped a lot of people back to reality

"Break a vocal chord."
A good example of someone with " the same voice" is Jinny young Bosch. Hes the voice of Ichigo from Bleach. Yu from Persona 4, also the might morphing power ranger too.
I love how he kept it real
This is really great advise, I guess my biggest issue is networking, I have social anxiety and talking to people is hard.
So how is this working out for you?
Came here for the indulgent food videos, stayed for the voice acting tips.
Bro this is the most passive aggressive help video I've ever seen. Lol
Now's a good time for Voice acting. And eating junk food at home on camera. You're a Triple Threat with that sage wisdom.
I wanted to be a voice actress when I was young but I gave up cus I couldn’t figure out how to get into it... and where I live, voice over isn’t a huge thing. I guess I would have to look for online opportunities? But in the end, I ended up doing other things. This video was actually really helpful compared to other “how to get into voice acting” videos though!
Pillows! Hundreds and hundreds of pillows!
I’m not even trying to get into voice acting, but this video is gonna blow up. Serious, and reassuring. That’s really hard to do.
Literally, replace voice acting with any other career you want. Great advice!
Thanks for the advice, I hope I can look back on this in 5 years and see how far I've gone.
Nobody ever mentions the most important aspect aside from the foot in the door, you really have to have inate talent. You can "learn" a lot of things, but if your voice and brain aren't able to communicate fluidly and effortlessly to create and and give life to a character's persona and voice, your screwed. It can be one solid voice that is distinct and polished or a choir of many unique voices, but if it isn't in your head in the first place, it will always come off as forced. It's an ugly truth, same applies to many other talents and fields... for instance if your 5ft tall, no matter how much effort you put in your likely not to become the next lebron. You can achieve some successes but that hard limit will stop you. This is something to consider before determining your scope in a specialized field like VA. Look at the greats, either they focus on one core voice of absolute distinctiveness or a gaggel of unique voices all with solid grasp. You virtually never see anyone in between that.
couldve sworn upon hearing his first words he was dropped into a recording studio to record the lines for a new video game
Genuine, sincere and honest. This is a great thing to hear nowadays
Thank you for your personal insight.
Im just happy for a new video
YOU VA'D VASERAGA? that's so badass I had no idea
People tell me all the time that you have to be good at all types of voices to make it. hearing you say "thats nonsense" really reassured me.
I wonder if it's a bit easier to get into voice acting in America though because of the amount of animation and games produced though? Mind you, I think I remember reading that radio in the UK is big for voiceovers. It's always something I've found interesting and adding voices to characters while playing RPGs is great fun.
When you said take a paid class from a reputable person my first thought was “do you have a class?”
I can’t wait to watch this ! Thank you , one day I’d really like to make it a career.
I've done a lot of auditions before but I've never heard back from anyone. The site I use to do auditions is called Casting Call Club. Not the greatest but I honestly can't find any other places that allow you to audition for free. I thought of Voice but that's $500 annual to just do auditions that might not even work out for you.
Wow, Thank You and although im not worthy, Respect to your Hardwork.
I've been thinking about making a podcast and this was really helpful :D
I feel like more people need to hear that there's nothing wrong doing something as a hobby for your own creative fulfillment. Picking the route of keeping a passion as a hobby and not turning it into a big career shouldn't be shameful at all.
Happy to see you point that out.
Edit: There's also no shame in reevaluating along the way - you don't have to pick a path and hard commit to it forever. You can start down a path and discover you'd rather go a different route. It's okay! Just try to do what will fulfill you in the long run and keep you happy as you go :D
Great advice, thank you
