The story about how the Thai woman took the guys money and then showed her true Thai husband to that guy who just paid for everything, is truly evil. I hope Karma hits her back hard! That they somehow lose everything. How manipulative she was. Women! It’s ALL about the money! Think guys. Think. Before you let yourself get taken for a ride! Don’t be so naive!

Important to tell these stories people from the west that lived and grew up in nations where everyone around them was around there income level dont know what happens when you move to a place when you have 5-10 times the wealth of others, you are a target. Its exactly the same if you have wealth 5-10 times of everyone around you in the West, people act different.
Hard to believe that a business owner would not read a contract before he signed it. And you need to make sure the translator is NOT someone suggested by your partner. And it sounds like it would be a good idea to have a few friends drop by from time-to-time, who are not well known there to find out if any shenanigans are going on.

The girlfriend 'knowing' a builder would already be 'hm...but ok'...but signing docments in a foreign language without a lawyer having a look at it and translate it to you own language, is a big no no. Luckily the guy came out ok financially...it could've been much worse.
Exactly, know what you are signing. Also, a lawyer of your own choosing, never from someone who knows someone. And as one would do in most places, have several contractors give a price.

When retired guys get bored in Pattaya they really need to find a hobby that doesn't involve a bar or alcohol. The few successful 'Retirement' bar owners are far outnumbered by the unsuccessful 'Retirement' bar owners. Not sure if this is old news, but I understand 'Palmy' has some issues with his GF and the bar on Rhompo.
Why move to Pattaya and then get a 40 year old girlfriend? Better off having a handful of attractive 20 something girls who will meet you outside the bar (so no bar fine) and show you a good time for a few hours at a time at non - tourist pricing. If you can arrange something like that. You can avoid all the drama that will come with having a girlfriend and just pay for what you get when you want it rather than pay for everything for them all the time like food and other living expenses.
I'm early 40s, so I prefer your plan. But when I'm 70+, having a 40 y.o. gf /"gf" in Pattaya will be perfect! She won't have choices around every corner, and she'll be skilled in cleaning, cooking and taking care of my old arse. Sex will be an addition, and she'll be veeery patient. So a 40 y.o. will be much better than a 20 y.o.!

Rule is dont ever move "big" money in these countries meaning SE-Asia etc. that something like this happens. If something goes over 1000£ alarm bell should ring, for some good limit is 100£ or 500£. Just make sure you afford to lose the money (without changing your lifestyle) you spend, give, make bar deals and make sure you understand any contract you make if you make some. There are apps thesedays that translate the text right away when you show it to your phone camera.

In any country of the world , why would you never run this stuff through an established lawyer , have an escrow account all that .. especially when you don’t know the laws and don’t understand the language , it s worth the extra cost !
