Article 13: Should I turn on YouTube monetization? Your opinion matters

  • Long story short: in order to try to keep my channel online after the 22 of January due to EU law called Article 13, I am afraid that I will have to monetize the channel, even if it means losing some money on the deal. According to SocialBlade.com, my channel will only make around 70 Euros per year, and it will cost me over 600 Euro to try to keep the channel alive (not including my time and effort I put in the videos).
What is your opinion on this?
Will you still watch the content if RUclips will put some commercial in front of the videos?
Will it bother you so much, that you think one should rather not turn on monetization, and let them delete the channel?
In the EU they have sent out the new updated terms of services. Due to Article 13 and 11 which are two new additions to the EU copyright law there is a high chance that RUclips might delete small European channels, especially those who are not monetizing their content.
Namely, RUclips is a businesses, and if they are not making money on a channel, this means that the channel presents only a loss of revenue to them. Now with Article 13 in addition to the loss of revenue it will also mean additional risk and liability.

The content of your channel is of such good quality !
It is also clear (at least to me) that you spend a lot of time in order to find the best ( & easy to understand) real life examples when you want your viewers to grasp some complicated concept that one has to understand (at least superficially) in order for the remainder of your video to make sense to anyone who's been paying attention. I do appreciate your videos quite much, actually enough to take the time and write this comment (must be one of my 3 comments or so on yt in something like 10 years).
I would really not want your channel to disappear / be terminated, it is really one of the top channels on electronics!
I have no doubt that your channel will gain more and more traction, because the work you do is great and people interested in what you are saying / teach are no fools: they like the good content you put up!
So yeah, monetize your channel and hope for the best!
Other than hoping for the best, maybe have a look at patreon or other similar online "tipping" platform? I haven't read all the other 99 comments that were so far been written so I don't know if somebody else made this suggestion, but maybe worth considering (in order to make profit and make sure you make money instead of losing some). I for one would not mind send some monopoly-looking money (read: euros) your way if that's what it takes for you to keep going.
I really hope you find a way to make this channel live and thrive!
Keep going, the content you make is genuinely useful and of very good quality!
    Cheers mate!

Really appreciate your time for writing this long comment, and for expressing your support! As you see, so far I have not turned on monetization and also never asked people for their money. Namely, I have created this channel in order to try to educate people by trying to transfer some of my knowledge (as little as I have) to others. However, due to these hap-hazardous changes in the laws I am practically forced to treat now this channel as a "business" which cost me money just because they want to tax Google. I am disgusted by the fact that they can do this to me and to other people who spend their time to produce educational content. However, in the middle of this month I will have to turn on monetization, and considering that I will be losing money, I will have to create a PayPal account, and practically beg people for a bit of money. This whole political thing controlling the Internet got way too dirty, nasty, and spinning out of control...

Just finished watching the eleventh video in the repairing SMPS series - I found this video when I looked for video number twelve :-). I noticed in the comments on this video that you decided against monetisation, and since I can still see your channel, it's obviously not been deleted by RUclips. Had you had further correspondence from them? I suspect that if not you're in limbo, which explains why no new videos from you over the past year - always hoping for more! I really enjoyed your videos, and found them an excellent resource to learn from, so wish to offer you my thanks for spending the time and effort to produce and publish them.

Looking at situation there are 3 possible options..
    1) do nothing but keep going as usual, copyright witll not affect you coz you are not using any copyrighted music in your videos.. and content shown in your video is only for fair/teaching purpose only....
    2) monetization will cost u more than net income.. so in that case you may creat another channel in the name of a friend living in another region (country) where 70€ income is not big deal... and he will send u this amount....
    3) start monetization and donate all amount to charitable foundation, in that case you will not need tax consultant (if its applicable in your country)

Dave Jones at EEVBlog has a video where he talks about the money he makes from youtube. He has a reasonably large channel and still needs to do a lot of ancillary activities to make up the total money gap compared to a full time salary.

Based on your subscriber numbers, I suspect you are underestimating your income potential on this channel. I have no training or expertise in tax law or EU laws. That said, for small sources of income, I am surprised the EU is so prohibitive! Surely there is a way to legally declare small sources of income and pay tax on that. I suspect that many authors don't bother if numbers are very small, and if numbers are significant but small there must be a way to honestly declare income. I would not bother to start a separate bank account but I would honestly record every monthly income deposit. I suggest you also record expenses like video cameras, software and even internet access fees, since all can reasonably be considered to be expenses. Most of us spend more than we earn, and if so one could argue that tax on a failing business venture should be near zero anyway. Another way to deal with this would be to donate all unbalanced income to a legitimate nonprofit enterprise. If you keep a careful record you're not likely to be a vulnerable target for audit even if the tax people take an interest.

    • @DonkeyLearningIT
      @DonkeyLearningIT  5 лет назад

You would be surprised how many hoops and loops you need to jump through here! Everything is taxable, even ridiculous amounts of money, and even donations. As for the bank account, if I do not make a separate one, I would need to pay a Steuerberater ever more, since my personal finances between my full time job would be mixed with the secondary income. If you declare all the things you stated above, and your business is losing money, you cannot do it due to a concept called "Liebhaberei im Steuerrecht" (sorry, could not find the English term). Practically you cannot be systematically losing money on a business, otherwise you *must close* that business within the EU.

You can skip the bank account, just use paypal and never transfer from paypal to bank, just buy stuff from ebay with paypal. In other words your youtube income should not be visible. Like - it does not exist. And because it doesn't exist there is nothing to declare or tax. Money that you do not bring in your country should not be taxed. Margaritaville was hilarious! :-D
The battle between the EU and Google should be a good one. I will kick back with popcorn to watch it! The US government has no control over the tech giants right now, and probably won't take this battle on. I know the EU has been successful in squeezing billions out of Intel (which I owned stock in) and other large multinational companies, but Google's control of online search (among other things) and Amizon's control of online commerce put them in a different league, so I think the EU will lose this one.
The Chinese have taken a different approach. They have been fighting with Google for a while but recently they came up with a mutually agreeable deal where they will pay Google lots of money and Google will help them keep their people in the dark...

I suggest saving the content and looking into a secondary/backup platform. People are beginning to see YT and the big social media companies for what they are and seeking alternatives. Early adoption could work in your favor in terms of gaining viewership, but one never knows. Should you choose monetization, (I know I have mentioned it before and I'm not trying to kick a dead horse, only provide alternate perspective) Patreon or another similar service or even PayPal donations could help to offset any expenses you may incur and would only be sourced from people who wish to see continued content. For example, I quite happily send $10/mo to Mr. Carlson's Lab on Patreon because that level of subscription allows me to directly ask him questions regarding repairs or projects. I see it as completely worthwhile. The drawback is that Patreon is censoring people just the same as the other big entities. Not a great chapter in the digital age, however I have yet to see any content of yours to be the least bit objectionable, so they would have little reason to take notice.

@@j5p332 Thanks for taking your time! I agree with you regarding all this media platforms. Instead of letting people do their things, and letting express their opinions (even if I do *not necessarily agree* with those opinion) I think that they should give more freedom to free speech, and let people express their thoughts. Of course, they want to make money on it, and this is exactly what is biting me now. Content which is not 100% OK with their agenda will be deleted/demonetized. Considering that even if I turn on monetization (well, now I am forced to) the ad revenue will be very little. Because of this, I will have to look into other alternatives, like Patreon to offset the amount of money I have to spend on keeping this channel alive.

BTW, when it comes to Mr. Carlson, I like his content as well. He is not trying to be flashy, but giving you part of his knowledge. Apparently a large portion of the population prefers people who have no useful things to say or teach, but they look good on camera, put loud music in the background, and pretend to be expert on things they have no idea about, and all they give you is common sense statements like: if you go outside in the rain, you might get wet.

Interestingly enough the EU is implementing this new legislation to "be fair" and "recover the losses" of the copyright owners that are mostly, at the best of my knowledge, American companies. Well, my first opinion if you decide not to monetize it, is that you're being far too pessimistic, actually, Article 13 hasn't passed yet, there are some voting to come maybe they come to a better version of it. Also, I doubt your channel would be simply deleted, even if they can't sell ads through it they can get people all around the world into their platform, for instance, I am Brazilian. At last, if you decide to monetize it, again you're being too pessimistic in my opinion, I believe you would get more revenue from your material than you presume as it is high a quality one, also I truly suggest you checking this legislation about a tax specialist requirement, maybe there is an exception based on the amount of money you earn or something based on the digital content, I've seen this a lot on text laws I've studied, hard to believe it is simple-minded like that there in Germany, also I believe this obligation isn't a whole EU thing, I mean, to give you an example I've lived in Portugal for a year and I'd never heard about it... So those are my thoughts. I wish you a good future.

Wow, really appreciate for your time writing that long comment! When it comes to Portugal, the EU want to clash down on them, since they are the only country which offers tex-free living for people retiring within the EU or for foreign companies within the EU. Thus, the Portugal system (and also the weather) would be awesome to have around here. If I understood it right, when it comes to revenue, it is almost irrelevant what content I am producing. All it matters is the number of clicks, so producing more funky daily vlog clickbaity content is the way to go for making money. The situation is that if I monetize the channel, I will try to do it as legally clean as possible, since it is not worth it to get a huge fine for 150 Euros my channel would bring in a year. This will be also an exercise for me to learn the legal hoops and loops if I ever want to open a company or run my own business. For example, I am working as a Linux system administrator, and I was thinking about offering services for other computer centers or companies. If I would want to do this, I would need to go through the same system anyway, so at least once I learn the main things what to take care of.

I personally love your content, so at least I would be missing your videos. Turning on monetization would cause you to have all that costs? At least for for a bank account you could use DKB which is free of charge (currently). You sure you need a tax accountant? I do have one for myself, but only not having to wrestle with this kind of language and to avoid documents like "Mantelbogen Anlage N" (I hate this stuff). Maybe it is a Nebentätigkeit which could be taxfree for this small amount of money. Also you could see this a a kind of a new - more expensive - hobby (which it surely already is) with some expenses. But sadly I do not have a 100% solution. But: ich wünsche Dir ein frohes neues Jahr und einen guten Rutsch :)

    I hate ads in videos
But I also hate ads in websites
    I hate ads in facebook
    I hate ads in apps
Solution: rooted my phone and installed adblockers and modified apks of everything lol
I guess that it pretty much depends to you... Continue with the channel or not?
Well, it's not clear what Google will exactly do. But in all current and previous cases of copyright strikes, RUclips sends a warning before deleting the channel to correct owners behavior, blocks the video, asks to delete the copyrighted part, or monetizes the video giving money to owner of copyrighted thing.
I don't think that they will simply delete the channel, specially yours (there are some tech review channels, gaming channels or other using copyrighted content) but basically yours uses maybe a couple of logos and charts that are worth nothing.
Your channel teaches electronics knowledge at an amateur level (not an institution, organization, school or anything) for free, thats another aspect to check and consider before applying a formal complaint/sue for copyright. RUclips will also consider this before considering deleting a channel.
Don't take it as an insult but you are no one on the internet (pewdepie for example is practically famous and I would call him a RUclips famous star, so he and others would definitely be in the sight of lawyers and copyright laws)
But small channels I think that will continue with their normal copyright infringement approaches. Other thing to take in count is that RUclips is a business so they will try to defend what's making them money and popularity/traffic in the site (as you said) but how many money do you have to make to be into that "RUclips protected" list?
When I first ran one RUclips channel (not this account) I remember I activated the option to monetize videos without actually receiving any money lol. I think that they kept the couple of cents I must have made. Maybe something like that could be done with you just to keep you running the channel normally. And skip getting the money but also having to comply with the requirements
When you said something about "if you cause a problem to us (RUclips), we will delete the channel" you also need to know what do they consider a problem? I think they refer to a big copyright infringement like uploading a movie or getting lots of money "illegaly" (by copyright infringement)
I don't know how you like to play but I would just keep uploading and take the risk, I'm pretty sure nothing will happen and they won't simply delete the channels just because "fuck it"
A personal recommendation would be to always keep a backup of your uploaded videos, no matter what you decide at the end.
I see no problem on you turning on monetization, anyway I don't see any ads ;)
I would just ask you to do one thing: keep uploading content, specially your unique and well explained complicated-topic related videos like the ones of the SMPS
Your category of content doesn't have a huge target audience but I can tell you that you are one of the few doing this if not the only one. And it's really enjoyable and helpful

  • @dosgos
    @dosgos 5 лет назад +1

Monetize the videos. You need someway of offsetting the cost of making the videos.
If you decide for sponsored content, make sure you are 100% transparent so there is not question regarding independence. That is a slippery slope as typical sponsored videos are boring and largely a waste of viewer time.

Thanks for the honest feedback! I was not thinking so far about sponsored content, since I think that the channel is way too small. • @DonkeyLearningIT
      @DonkeyLearningIT  5 лет назад +1

That would be too easy. As I wrote above to one commenter, that would be "Liebhaberei im Steuerrecht", i.e. within the EU (at least in German speaking countries) you cannot keep running a business or activity which is not producing any profit.
