Hello. Are you planning to continue this series? I find it very illuminating and would like to understand more the working of the Error amplifier OPAMP
Sure, I am in the process of making more videos. The issue is, that I moved to Asia, and currently due to the current situation I do not have access to a home lab, and I like to include small experimental portions. Therefore, all I can do right now is to produce some other content what I am working on and what might be interesting for other people.

If all goes right, I should upload a new video before the new year. Btw, some day I hope I will buy one of you. I am referring to a Lamborghini Gallardo of course ;) I wanna have a highlighter green one, with orange LED mods.
@@DonkeyLearningIT hi donkey!! I picked the name because of the meaning. I own two electric cars and have solar panels. I want to buy another Tesla in the future as they are better for the world and outperform any gas sports vehicle!!!
@@Gallardo6669 Good on you man. I am not a big car enthusiast, but all I know is that before I die (I'm now 40), I want to own one of those darn Italian guzzlers, and it better be an ugly highlighter green Lamborghini. It is on my bucket list. I mean, how do you even pick up young nice ladies with a Tesla? Here in German speaking countries Porsche is not considered a luxury car, neither British Lotus, or Alpha Romeo (except 4C). Here in Austria you will barely see the sun and there is no see, so solar and wind energy is almost non-existent, and electricity costs 0.28Euros per kWh...
@@DonkeyLearningIT I am 40 as well. Teslas are far more impressive then regular sports cars I believe. They also have a higher sympathy factor. I emigrated from Germany btw and work now in the wind industry. I program in my leasure as well. I really really hope you finish this power supply repair, it's an excellent course and has detailed information. Thank you.
Another great installment in the series. Hope the move goes well for you and I hope we see more videos once you settle in. I have read the other comments and I would not suggest you try a change anything about the way you present. Like other things in life you will never be able to create something that's suits everyone. My one suggestion would be to classify the video titles, as an idea after the "SMPS Repair Series #xx:" maybe add "Fundamentals of Feedback Loops". So there could be "Fundamentals [topic]", "Basic [topic]", "Practical [topic]", "Repair [topic]" or something like. It lets people know more about the content and whether it is simple or complex relative to their knowledge and skill level. Regarding the long title at the end of #11, it is already clear from the start of the title and previous installments it is about power supplies, so that could be left off, it would have worked with "SMPS Repair Series #11: Basic Feedback Loop and Control Theory". These are just hopefully constructive thoughts for you regarding the title. Your content is great, so don't make any drastic changes there. I think views (of all episodes) will go up once you get past the fundamentals, which (I believe) you needed to do before you get back to practical SMPS information, designs and repairs again.
Thanks for taking your time and giving me useful feedback. I truly appreciate it when people are giving me their opinion instead of just pressing the thumbs down button, since it helps. Comments regarding the material coming along way too slow are sadly right. I should produce at least two videos a week and blow through the fundamentals topics. Hopefully after I move I will get more free time. When it comes to the title suggestions, that is actually a great idea. I will try to implement that in the future.
It's like a cable TV provider cutting off service right before the final episode during a binge watch. I haven't watched TV for many years and my entertainment is a function of learning. If I plotted this phenomena on a graph, you'd understand how important these videos are. With that in mind, will there be additional videos to complete the series?
hello, just found your videos. Do you know what can cause a device to have no power, and the unit is TICK, TICK, TICKING when power is ON. now the ticking has gone very quiet. Thank you
Please continue the series that was initiated 5 years ago, if possible. There are several videos remaining to be made for diagnosing and fixing a PSU (Power Supply Unit). It would be greatly appreciated if you could condense the existing 11 videos into a single 20-minute video. Thank you very much for sharing.
Hopefully I will upload a new video before the new year. Sorry for the late reply btw, but RUclips often does not display new comments in the "creator studio" or whatever they call the new interface.
Conclusion, smps is basically the advance version of DC buck converter. I successfully made a high voltage DC boost converter last year, using the old TL494 ic as pwm driver, built it from scratch in two weeks. It was a fun project but quite dangerous playing with high voltage
This is the best video series on SMPS Ive seem on youtube. Very easy to understand even with accent. Another electronics theory course in UK English I think I get frustrated trying to understand his strong accent and his voice starting off talking loud and then ending in almost a mumble like he's talking to his self. His course is great but too hard for me to understand his speech and accent. Your course and videos are perfect. Please continue course. You are a gifted natural teacher.😟😟☹
I was very busy with different issues what I will most likely mention in my next video. Now I should have more time to produce content both on SMPS theory of operation but also on practical debug/repair.
Not yet. It is coming up next week. I need to give back the apartment at the end of the month, so about 80% of my stuff is already packed up. Lets hope that I will have time to produce an other video before I need to disassemble the tables as well.
I can feel a bit for betta67. But you must be aware that not everybody has the same knowledge level, and Donkey Learning IT wants to make it understandable for everyone. And you can always skip parts if you want to. Btw the example with the shower makes it a bit confusing because we have two inputs there: cold and hot water where as the pwr supply has only 1 input. I love youre accent. You speak very clear and not to fast. I am not a native english speaker, I am from the Netherlands, but I can understand it very well. Looking forward to the next episodes.
I hope you (or anybody else) won't get me wrong... And if someone does I really don't care. You are doing a good job with this series but I was drawn to it by the title... SMPS repair series... and I had patience to watch every episode up to the 8th... The title was catchy... repair... but even at the eight episode we are still at the fundamentals... You delve into basics and fundamentals way too much! It's an excellent series for a layman and I'm sure many people get to know and understand a lot regarding physical phenomena and electronics but it doesn't has anything to do with SMPS repair... those who benefit for your work will never repair a SMPS to their benefit :) . The series should have the title: Basics/fundamentals of SMPS repair mit a little Physik in it. Also, you should watch a bit your vizualisations not only the praise... Ep.1 311k views Ep. 2 94k Ep. 3. 86k Ep. 4 58k Ep. 5 53k Ep. 6 74k Ep. 7 24k Ep. 8 5.1k Ep. 9 3.2k Ep. 10 1.6k Ep. 11 0.9k Last 3 or 4 episodes don't count as they are pretty fresh for a series started almost 2 years ago but there's a constant drop in audience without the exception of ep. 7. I'm not a video blogger but this is proof that you can't keep your audience captive and your tremendous effort and consistency will not reach it's end/purpose. I'm eager to finally see 3-4 cases of practical repair of SMP's but we are still far from it. Again, please don't get me wrong, you are a great teacher that handle the physical phenomena and processes that are involved in the subject and you do a good job with what you have at hand but the title/name does not fit the audience (as proven by the audience statistics). Best wishes!
I *really appreciate* constructive criticism. Also, you are 110% right. In fact, once I am done with the series, I will rename the titles. However, the titles are already at max length, so I will have to think about it how to rename them. When it comes to videos, so far I have not done them in order to gain views or subscribers, this is why also I never ask people to subscribe in the videos. This is why there are no commercials or sponsors either. I agree with you, if I want to make money and grow this channel, there has to be more equilibrium between practice and theory. However, filming repairs would take me forever, and that would force me to turn on commercials and bomb my viewers with adverts, sponsors etc. If viewers are really fine with that, I can try to take the channel towards more "commercial" route.
Btw, do you think that if I would be producing repair videos, would people really watch it? I am not sure. Namely, there are others on RUclips who do daily repair videos. I cannot compete with those people at all (like Louis Rossman) since I have a real job. Also, those guys can do dirty jokes making their content funny, which I am not allowed to do due to tough censorship. For me RUclips is a simple hobby. What I wanted was to produce a series of videos how SMPS works, after which I can do practical repair, and just give the link to people regarding the basic theory behind the repair.
@@DonkeyLearningIT :) Look... you are at episode 11 of this series, right? Only you know how much did you had to learn for you to master the subject, only you know how much time it took to plan the content, to divide it into "eatable" chunks and so on... The title of the series does not match the target audience but hey, it is a commendable effort by any means. I know this because I also tend to explain too much to the users that use (sic!) the systems I maintain. And yeah, by formal education I'm a Physics teacher :D . If a subject fascinates me than I don't mind commercials... I know that you are trying to give as much as you can back to the community... like bigclive, like Franlab, post apocalyptic inventor and many others. And that is all it matters... While you have a job and you don't wish to became a full time video blogger... like Technology Connections did, (or that crazy Aussie :P ) for example it's ok to monetize through commercials if you have and maintain captive enough users...
@@betta67Luckily I do not need to do much research, but it takes awful amount of time to make the slides and to edit the videos. When it comes to the content, I do not script it, so mostly I am "just winging it". Still, making a video takes me over 6-8 hours. On the other hand, the issue is, that I like to keep my promise. Since I promised myself that I will upload a full series on the building blocks of SMPS, when time/health allows, I am slowly digging through it. Next week I will move to a new apartment, where hopefully my neighbors are not fighting constantly, so that I can record more videos. If commercials are fine, I will try to monetize the channel and get more items for repair/teardown from the money.
@@DonkeyLearningIT Please, don't mention Louis Rossman :) He repairs expensive gadgets made by a company he hates. And he is an excellent ambassador of "rights to repair"! For all of us, not only those who deal with the bitten apple... There are many reasons why some RUclips channels have a great success and large audience. Among them: lack of time to DIY although you have the knowledge, knowledge thirst, informative aspect, sense of belonging and many more... I'm sure Louis R. does not need a channel to get a pizza, nor does bigclive has his expenses covered... To cut it short... yes, I would watch videos with practical repair filled with commercials (I can't be a Patreon though). Keep up the good work! Focus! And you'll grow...
Any idea when the next episode(lesson ,installment ,chapter )will be released.Dont want to sound pushy but I keep checking every few days and hoping their will be new material. In the meantime I keep polishing up on what I have learned so far .Just recently repaired another flatscreen 65 inch seiki. It was fairly simple to find the bad mosfet that drove the backlight and replace it.Hope your well and hope to see more educational stuff soon.
I am glad that you are doing good repair! Getting something back from the dumpster is always fun even if you are not necessarily making money on it. When it comes to videos, the issue is that I am working on my daily job and on my side hustle like crazy to save up some money. The moving costs about a month ago got me short on my budget, so I got to put some money back in the bank for rainy days. Btw, if you hit the notification button on RUclips, most of the time when a new video is published, RUclips will send you a notification.
@@LeeValentine001 Sadly I had some issue in the family, so it will take a while until I can sit down and produce new content first. After my father have passed away, I just sound way too negative in the audio, and I do not want to upset my viewers. People have enough problems on their own...
When my brother passed away about 5 years ago from brain cancer I found it almost impossible to do anything that reminded me of him .Especially playing guitar.I couldn't even look at it let alone pick it up.It was like all the excitement that it had given me was gone .Many months passed before I even attempted to pick it up but slowly as time passed the excitement returned and I now play as lousy as I ever did.Looking forward to your return .I have been learning a fair amount on my own but it's still hard I find to wrap my head around the whole power supply system especially in tvs which I work on.There arent many schematics available these days and sitting down and drawing out your own will definitely test your patience. How ever it does seem to help somewhat as I slowly learn operation of these sets. They seem all they seem in some ways yet very different in others.Looking forward to your return .
I have been a baaad donkey again, since there are important projects to finish for my daily job. However, the content on electronics will resume this week, considering that I was doing good progress on job-related projects.
I love this series and wanted to watch since I have removed a PSU from an iMac and replaced it. I now have a PSU which is dead but visibly looks perfectly ok. So I was hoping your series would eventually guide me to how to find the fault in my PSU so I can repair it. Sadly, now I have all the theory but still no idea where to start. I was really hoping that eventually, you would show where I need to check each part of the circuit. Will you ever get to repairing PSUs? Can you do a video of the steps to properly troubleshoot a switch mode power supply?
Well, so far we have covered only about 50% of the theory. However, after I am done with the theory part, I will upload practical repairs as well. Of course, I have decided that until the theory is not covered, there is no point in exchanging parts, since I cannot explain what I am doing and why I am doing it. Such videos would attract more viewers, but I try to make the channel more educational instead of "more successful". I would expect that in the following months I will release two videos a week, so the theory should be covered pretty soon.
Hi have bing watched all your smps videos...they are excellent! I have learned a lot from your clear explanations. I cannot find any of the repair series beyond #11...do they exist and have you stopped producing content? thanks jrs
Yes, I have been a lazy ba$tard, and did not produce yet new videos for 2 years. I had both of my parents pass away within 18 months, so I was really not in the right frame of mind to be honest. However, I think now I am back. Expect new videos coming from me.
@@DonkeyLearningIT So sorry for your loss! Hope you're doing well, I was about to ask when you would upload new videos for this fantastic series, but I understand your unfortunate circumstances
Appreciate the effort you put into this series. However, after 11 lectures it is frustrating to find that (a) the series stops abruptly (b) seemingly irrelevant topics were covered in far to much detail and (c) there is no material on how to repair a switch mode PSU 😞 and this is disappointing given that the title of the series is "SMPS Repair Series" !!!
I have to agree... too much detail in theory... not enough examples, and stopped abruptly 4 years ago... you repeated ALOT.. these are good videos, i did learn.. please continue... more examples... with breadboard and PSU / SMPS boards... explaining circuits...
I have the slides done for that already, so I will explain it in the follow-up video. As a "preview", in standard circuits they use a voltage divider, since changing the value of the resistors is easier and cheaper than changing Zener diodes.
@@BeetleJuice1980 typically, in SMPS the reference voltage Vref is anything betwen 2.5V and 5V, so the output voltage must be scaled down so that it's equal to Vref. When this voltage is equal to Vref, the circuit is in a stable state.
After I moved to my new apartment first I needed time to unpack my stuff, and of course I got behind on my daily job. Now I am getting back in track, so tomorrow most likely will sit down and make a new video.

@@DonkeyLearningIT Take my condolences, man. In Russia, such things as screaming drunk neighbours are very common. Don't know what to do with mine. Unfortunately i can't change my apartment)
Great videos! Keep doing it. You are very good teacher!
I like to watch your course regarding SMPS, you explain everything with details which is very good in my opinion. I am looking forward to watch next episodes especially these dedicated to transistors and diodes used in SMPS. I am particularly interested how designers choose between BJTs and MOSFETs for their PS and how do they make them switch these many transformers found in SMPS
honestly i you cleared alot of dark spots i was having issues to understand them in smps .. thanks alot .. and sorry hearing thst your father passed away .. waiting your new lessons and you be back soon
my regards from libya
Pls make more videos, I love all of them. I am so excited to keep learning through you!!!!
If all goes right, I should upload a new video before the new year.
Btw, some day I hope I will buy one of you. I am referring to a Lamborghini Gallardo of course ;)
I wanna have a highlighter green one, with orange LED mods.
Thank you.
These are awesome, you are very good at this!
Really hope you continue this series. Great job!
Thanks for the encouragement. Hopefully before new year I can release a new video.
Keep up that metal fistpump ;)
I am very excited too. I would donate to keep this channel live!
Excellent explanations Sir. When will you be uploading the next video in this series?
thanks doctor very interesting lessons , waiting for the new lesson i hope it will be very soon good luck
Looking forward #12~~~ thank you so much for sharing
Can I help you, maybe with slides and video editing? Would really appreciate if you could come back to finish this masterpiece!
Is there #12?
Great job, actual education instead of quick tips. What happened to #12?
it was a very informative series fr
I think views (of all episodes) will go up once you get past the fundamentals, which
(I believe) you needed to do before you get back to practical SMPS information, designs and repairs again.
You videos are great, they all get a thumbs up from me.
Hello dr donkey, the series is very good because you are thorough in your lessons. Do you have plans to continue it?
Thanks for making these 🙏
up to this date waiting for your next video. Thank You
Hopefully I will upload a new video before the new year.
Sorry for the late reply btw, but RUclips often does not display new
comments in the "creator studio" or whatever they call the new interface.
@@DonkeyLearningIT good to know you're still around!
Your videos are very clear and helpful, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
When is a debugging tutorial for switching power supplies coming?
I was very busy with different issues what I will most likely mention in my next video. Now I should have more time to produce content both on SMPS theory of operation but also on practical debug/repair.
@@DonkeyLearningIT great! Looking forward to it
You now have more subscribers, so I am hoping to see you back to making more videos.
Ah, another episode.
I hope your movement went all right!
Not yet. It is coming up next week. I need to give back the apartment at the end of the month, so about 80% of my stuff is already packed up. Lets hope that I will have time to produce an other video before I need to disassemble the tables as well.

Looks like you’re well prepared. Best of luck!
@@Conservator.Many thanks, I will need it! Hopefully all goes horribly right.
when you will continue this course ??
I can feel a bit for betta67. But you must be aware that not everybody has the same knowledge level, and Donkey Learning IT wants to make it understandable for everyone. And you can always skip parts if you want to. Btw the example with the shower makes it a bit confusing because we have two inputs there: cold and hot water where as the pwr supply has only 1 input. I love youre accent. You speak very clear and not to fast. I am not a native english speaker, I am from the Netherlands, but I can understand it very well. Looking forward to the next episodes.
When is your video no #12 onwards are coming sir

Ep. 7 24k
Ep. 8 5.1k
Ep. 9 3.2k

Last 3 or 4 episodes don't count as they are pretty fresh for a series started almost 2 years ago but there's a constant drop in audience without the exception of ep.
Are you going to complete the series?
Awesome video's! Very informative! Stopped at #11?

Lucrative tutorial please keep it up.
Thanks for the comment. For me the video is not lucrative since I do not earn even a dime on it. Lets hope in the future, we will see.

Are you still around 😂? We miss the follow-up videos. Are they coming?
Donkey Learning IT Good to know. Keeps us on tender hooks :-)
Keep up the great work. I will continue to watch.
Hi have bing watched all your smps videos...they are excellent! I have learned a lot from your clear explanations. I cannot find any of the repair series beyond #11...do they exist and have you stopped producing content?

Yes, I have been a lazy ba$tard, and did not produce yet new videos for 2 years.
I had both of my parents pass away within 18 months, so I was really not in the right frame of mind to be honest. However, I think now I am back. Expect new videos coming from me.
@@DonkeyLearningIT So sorry for your loss! Hope you're doing well, I was about to ask when you would upload new videos for this fantastic series, but I understand your unfortunate circumstances
Mate! This is great stuff but you really need to come up with the rest of the videos.
Your videos are very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make them. How do we get in contact with you about a project?
I have seen all your SMPS repair videos. Will you continue in explaining the repair technicks? I am looking forward to hearing from you soon :)
If all goes horribly right, then I should be able to finally upload a new video before new year.
Great work. Why the error Amp needs to be fed from a voltage divider and not straight up from the output?
I have the slides done for that already, so I will explain it in the follow-up video. As a "preview", in standard circuits they use a voltage divider, since changing the value of the resistors is easier and cheaper than changing Zener diodes.
@@DonkeyLearningIT I am referring to r1 and r2 in the diagram with the error amp. Why we need r1 and r2, is the voltage too high for the error Amp?
@@BeetleJuice1980 typically, in SMPS the reference voltage Vref is anything betwen 2.5V and 5V, so the output voltage must be scaled down so that it's equal to Vref. When this voltage is equal to Vref, the circuit is in a stable state.
Awaiting for further video.
After I moved to my new apartment first I needed time to unpack my stuff, and of course I got behind on my daily job. Now I am getting back in track, so tomorrow most likely will sit down and make a new video.
