Actually, any distortion pedal will work with this setup. Some guitar distortions are actually amazing on bass, if you mix them with some clean signal.

Maybe but if you split the signal and have both, a dry and dirty signal path, you can then manipulate them and craft a much better sound than if you have an overdrive pedal with a blend control. However, times have moved on and the darkglass pedals are way more advanced now, then again, you could just get a HX stomp.

They sound the same, second one is just louder, so you think it sounds better
