This concerto is a masterpiece. I feel like Beethoven was getting better with every piano concerto he composed. And the musicians are giants. Vienna Philharmonic is one of the best orchestras in the world, Rattle one of the best still active conductors and Brendel is famous for his interpretations of Beethoven. It's one of the best recordings you can find - but the piece is so extraordinary that even lesser renditions affect listeners profoundly. I like the Emperor concerto even more, but this is close to these heights. Beethoven was a master of thematic development and it's so well done here, the subjects persist, but still surprise even if you know the piece.

One of the best recordings of this extremely difficult piano concerto...Brilliantly played, excellent conducting...Beethoven with dynamics-not persistantly loud!!! sensitive warm and then with strength, and clarity....just a well balanced performance....thank you for posting...GRANDIOS
I love how in the first movement he has those massive trills and then pulls the rug out from under you with a deceptive cadence, only to lead you to something even more beautiful. This might be his most artistic and original concerto of all.

This Cadenza by either the conductor himself or by Beethoven reminds me of other concertos that Mozart and Haydn made is so good, classical style! This is the complete cycle I have of Beethoven’s Five Piano Concertos.
It's masterpiece truly appreciate and beautiful.
There is a similar theme to the first theme from the future Symphony No. 7, Movement I at 24:06 to 24:17.
The difference is that this theme is more ornamented. It kind of sounds like Chopin, come to think of it.

Thank you for this unusual, musician's-eye view of an exemplary performance of Beethoven's sublime G Major concerto, arguably the greatest of all piano concertos. All of even the greatest virtuosos get tripped up at some point performing Beethoven - except Alfred Brendel. He is the one who seems to be able to play the music as composed with absolute technical perfection and still invest it with the emotional punctuation and color that are the essence of Beethoven's idea of art. Through Brendel the score - literally the Master's autograph of the score with all its subtleties and meanings - becomes transparent; and here we are witness to it.

It is then picked up by the orchestra at 24:20, and it sounds more like the 1st movement. It lasts until 24:33 and is played by the clarinets and violins, and is later joined by the oboes, cellos and basses in succession.
